And has anyone else noticed the recent flood of Bobby Charlton material? The mutv documentary, the renaming of the stand, LvG talking about his admiration for the man, etc... Obviously he's a legend for club and country, and watching the documentary really drove that home, but I can't shake the feeling that this is a reflection of the inner workings of the club, that it's some sort of way of appeasing him in order to persuade him to accept a Mourinho appointment; he's made comments in the past about how he doesn't think Mourinho is fit for United (http://www.theguardian.com/football/2012/dec/07/bobby-charlton-jose-mourinho-manchester-united), and LvG suddenly talking about Charlton so warmly and especially saying 'he has always backed me' in his last press conference gives me the feeling that Charlton has been fighting against sacking LvG and the appointment of Mourinho. I'm not sure to what extent Charlton's influence is within the club, but I imagine it's considerable seeing as he was a key voice in the appointment of Sir Alex.
Now, I'm not necessarily saying that's the case, and it's definitely not my intention to slander the man over what is pure speculation, we're obviously approaching the 60 year anniversary of his debut (but why not name the stand at the more significant 50 year mark,) all of this may just be motivated by well deserved admiration for him, but the timing is incredibly suspect, I've heard more about Charlton in the last few months than in the last few years. I'm wondering if anyone else had the same thoughts and would be willing to share their thoughts on the matter.
