Remember this, you don't have to label your faith or lack of faith. You don't have to label it for yourself or share it with anyone else. But here is how I handle living among the highly religious. Maybe it will come in handy.

At first I was often questioned about my faith or why I didn't attend services. I simply replied "I trust in God and not man. Everyday I ask God to show me truth and read his works."

Religious people took this to mean I was a deeply faithful but the reality was I was studying flaws in my religion and then in other religions while praying to god if he were real to show me truth. Eventually I became agnostic but the line I quoted above still works when questioned by religious peers which is rare now.

A few tried to pry further and say they they wonder if I have lost my faith so I used this reasoning. First I ask "Do you pray for me?" They say yes of course. Then I ask "Do you have faith God answers your prayers?" They always say yes. So then I ask "Then why do you worry about my relationship with God if you have faith and pray for me and I constantly seek truth? Do you think God will not reveal his truth?"

Stumped them every time.

Wow, you're way more dedicated than I am. I just say I'm atheist lol.

I just go with Agnostic.

I only believe what can be proven. I'll respect other people's beliefs as long as they don't try to shove their own down my throat, and if someone ends up proving god exists I'll go along with it.

I don't like Atheists because I think they're just as stubborn and closed to other ideas as religious folk are. They say they're more focused on science and reality, but that should mean being open to any possibility.

You can be open to the possibility that a god of some form can exist, but not be religious.

You might say it's flip-floppy, but I say it's just respecting whatever reality may bring or could bring.

Atheist just means non theistic. I don't like what intolerant people have made the word become. The best I can do is to live my life as an atheist and show people what the word really means.

hardcore atheists are as bad as hardcore christians or muslims. if you open your mind to everything the hard atheists react like you're crazy...pretty much like SJWs version of traditional religions

I don't think it's about believes in what can exist. It's about having faith in the things that no one has proven true or false. No one can prove if there is a soul or a after life. You just have to have faith that there is.

Anything other than whatever denomination the person you are talking to is = Satanist heathen destined for hellfire and brimstone in NC.

Actually being agnostic is an epistemological position which essentially means you are not 100% sure of your position so you can be an agnostic theist or atheist. While I dislike religion(See Islam) as a whole I wouldn't be snotty and say I'm 100% sure there is no god or gods and that is why I largely keep my disbelief to myself unless someone asks me and doesn't let me deflect. People who are 100% sure (I.e mathematical proof level) would be considered gnostic theists or athiests.

I used to use the proper terms but got tired of explaining it. Honestly I sort of feel in between an Agnostic Atheist and Agnostic Theist in that I believe there is a force that creates but this force has no awareness, at least not like ours, therefore has no wants or intention. It doesn't intervene in our lives. It only creates and destroys. I have no idea where it comes from or perhaps it has always existed. It may not desire worship but if anything deserves worship, it would be THE giver and taker of life. But what I describe is whatever came before the Big Bang. So am I describing a natural force in the universe( something science can define) as my god and what does that make me?

Around these parts that ends up being a two hour long conversation, five family members calling you or showing up later crying, preachers showing up at your home the next day to witness to you, people telling your kids "Your parents are going to hell". It's bad here. Even my family doctor tries to get me to go to church.

Are you a Jehovah's Witness or something?

No. I grew up in a both a Holiness and Church of God community. One was a bit liberal for a Church of God but the Holiness group were the type where the women wore their hair long, long sleeves and ankle length skirts, no make up or jewelry, no shorts for men. Very religious group. In many ways it's culture was similar to that of some Islam centered cultures. Like we weren't supposed to associate with outsiders except when we had to, only marry others like us, no dating alone. It was highly restrictive.

Hey, I want to respond civilly. First, let me say that you have a good point. But imo, theres a crucial flaw. Youre stating your claim on the phrase "Do you have faith God answers your prayers?" to where if its yes = then why are you unsure about Him. By that logic, if he does answer a prayer.. say a friend praying that you live another day, and it manifests as true, then that means your justification is flawed. Because it came true and is right. You cant base it on a bias on just the negative side (prayer not working) and discard the bias on the positive (prayer coming true). The truth is that you receive whatever is in His plan. Just because you dont receive that nice house you always pray for, doesnt mean prayer doesnt work. Its just not part of your destiny, at least in this part of your life. Everything good and bad that occurs is his plan, getting you ready for the next move.

I understand the logic that if one believes god's will is best for them that praying for our own wishes is not as logical as praying that we are open to god's will being done in our lives. Our wants may conflict with god's will. Surprisingly, most religious people I know do not understand this.

But in my example, I am not asking for something tangible. I am asking for knowledge and direction from god, something he is supposed to give us anyway. What kind of loving god would expect a person to have faith while refusing to give them any direction and knowledge if they requested it? How could an absence of god's presence be part of my destiny? Essentially what I am asking the person to do is to exercise their own faith that their god is actively working on my soul while reiterating the fact that I am open to god's spirit and direction. It's just a psychological tactic that works because it redirects their judgement from me back to them. The problem becomes their lack of trust in god rather than the state of my spirit.

Now of course I know why I never received any answers from a god but to each his own.

This encapsulates how I feel exactly.

Glad we both understand that. But to answer your questions (in order):

  1. Where is it stated that we are entitled to knowledge and wisdom? And on the contrary, what if he already has. You might have brushed past it, subconsciously didnt notice, or marked it off as not enough evidence, etc. But simply, if you are a Christian like myself, the Bible literally gives you all the knowledge and direction. Like literally lays it out.
  2. The direction and knowledge is given to you through many things. But for this example ill use intuition. People who want to get in shape know its the right thing for them to do physically and mentally, but often come up with excuses. I know the example was vain, but my point is that everyone ignores their intuition at points in their lives, and experience failure. A sign from God that you chose the wrong step. This is direction, and you have learned the knowledge that brought you down. You can then use it to make the right move in the future.
  3. Absent maybe physically. But Im sure he shines in parts of your life. Im sure you have many blessings, some obvious ones such as life and opportunity and some special ones such as talents or gifts. One that hits me, is the terminally ill Wisconsin woman. I saw her GoFundMe and it mentioned a quote: 'The problem is, you think you have all the time in the world.' I bet she understands that right in the soul more than myself. I am blessed to not be living in that reality at this point of my life.

Well in that case, thats not Gods wrongdoing then, its just man misinterpreting/misunderstanding you and your situation. I apologize for sounding preachy btw, just trying my best to reply.

God can reach anyone. I was raised by agnostics, married an atheist, and tried not to think about it too much until AA and the higher power. I kind of glossed over those steps but did get get sober from 8 years of oxy, but one exercise in drug counseling stuck with me. For those of us "struggling" with the higher power concept, we were given a piece of paper and told to draw a line down the middle. On one side we wrote the attributes we would like our higher power to have, on the other side, the attributes we did not want our higher power to have. Then, voila, you had made a god. I remember thinking, "This is some old bullshit right here. If any god existed at all it would just be what it was, and not what I wrote down." A couple of years later missionaries from a different religion accidentally lead me to Christ. When I look back at all of the threads God wove together in that one moment, and how the kaleidoscope turned forever...God is good, all the time.

Wow. Oxy is tough. I just ran out of mine after 3 months due to a severe wrist fracture and plate surgery. Even though I didn't abuse it, I still felt crappy for a few days once it was gone, enough so that if I had more, I would have taken it just to get rid of the headache and body aches. I was frantically digging through all my purse's nooks and crannies looking to see if perhaps I dropped any when it it dawned on me what I was doing and it scared me how easy it is for anyone to get addicted. So I stopped looking and decided I'd rather live with the pain.

Yes, I recall the moment I realized I was addicted...I had a freshly filled prescription in my bag and then I couldn't find it. After much frantic searching I found it in my bag after all. I thought, "Oh, shit," even as I wrenched the cap off and swallowed more. That was towards the end of the first year. I had seven more to get through before I would be arrested and placed in treatment.

  • 1 Kings 3:9 So give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong.

Psalm 51:6 Yet you desired faithfulness even in the womb; you taught me wisdom in that secret place.

Proverbs 2:6 For the LORD gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.

Proverbs 3:6 in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.

Proverbs 8:17 I love those who love me, and those who seek me find me.

Daniel 2:21 He changes times and seasons; he deposes kings and raises up others. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the discerning.

Matthew 7:7 "Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.

The above shows that if one believes the Bible, we can automatically receive wisdom and we can ask for it. The Bible is open to interpretation. It has been written and rewritten and translated and parts were omitted and on and on it goes. What is consistent and what we know is fact, is that fallible men wrote it. My reasoning stands. I did not want a man's interpretation. I wanted God's. There is a difference between asking faithfully fully expecting to receive wisdom and not receiving answers because there is no one to give you those answers versus falling victim to conformation bias over and over again which is what I feel like people of faith do, no offense. I no longer believe the Bible is inspired by a god therefore I do not believe it lays out all the knowledge and direction I need but I do find parts of it to be quite inspirational. I particularly think Jesus seems like a nice guy. Seems like the kind of fellow I would enjoy hanging out with.

  • My intuition or gut feeling tells me the Bible is the work of man. But originally I sought God faithfully. Often intuition is perceived as influenced by the supernatural, labeled according to whatever deity one worships. Some people even attribute it to the work of dead ancestors. They can't all be right. The difference is I think everyone who believes in the supernatural is likely wrong. You think all of them are wrong except for Christians.

  • I have a perfect life but honestly I don't feel like I did anything to deserve it. I don't think I'm a shitty person overall. I help rescue animals so maybe some diety thinks that's nice or something. But I have religious and atheist pals with crappy lives and others with great ones. I see no pattern concerning faith that determines one's lot in life.

But to each his own. We all have to find our own path you know. I don't mind discussing religion, there is always something to learn from others and I didn't find your post preachy. I never mind a good discussion as long as the other party is polite. Actually, I think a person would be more open to a polite and friendly Christian than the hellfire and brimstone types. So good job representing your crew:)

Solid response w/ citations. I agree that the Bible has been edited throughout the generations. Who knows, maybe it was once organic like our Earth before man messed it up. What you said about everyone linking the supernatural to a deity is something I have dwelled on plenty of times as well. We just name it different things. At the end of the day, I think that undeniable consistency throughout different cultures, religions, times, proves that there is indeed a creator. One may call it the The Secret, universe, your higher self, etc. I feel that God created the laws of the universe, such as the law of attraction where positive thoughts bring positive things. Vice versa. Its all part of the design that he made for us to take advantage of. But anyways thats another topic, I appreciate the civility. Much love!

Because he has already given them. As a Christian, and since you asked this open ended question, I will reply from the Christian viewpoint. I believe the Bible to be true. God's plan all the way back to the Israelites and Abraham was to send a Messiah to save the world from sin. They would know the Messiah because he would fulfill the prophecies. Jesus fulfilled every prophecy in the Old Testament, and then died on a cross for the sins of the world. Three days later he rose from the dead.

If you are asking for guidance and asking for knowledge, I implore you to pick up a Bible. The answers you are looking for are in there. God has given us the Bible, but he has also given us each other. Jesus the Messiah has already come and paid the ultimate price for our sins. Now since Jesus is now in heaven, the Holy Spirit is now the part of God that is actively working to expand the church. Jesus has told us what to do, to go and make disciples of all nations. Does the Holy Spirit do that? Not without people's help. We believe that it is the duty of the Church on Earth to go tell people about the love that Christ has for them, for you, and that Jesus died and rose for all people including you and I. Now, we can't by ourselves come to believe in Christ, and that is where the Holy Spirit comes in. The Holy Spirit is what creates faith, what is now here on Earth doing God's will. You say that there is no direction, but there is, through Christ alone can you get to heaven.

If you have any questions about this, I'm happy to help explain to the best of my knowledge what I believe about my faith.

I appreciate your offer, that is very kind of you. Actually, I have read the Bible front to back in order and completely six times, parts of the Torah in Hebrew, bits and pieces too many times to count. The more I studied it, the less faithful I became. I bet that seems seems a bit odd to a person with a lot of faith.

So in essence, don't pray for anything, God has already predetermined what you are going to receive and you better like it.

If he's going to follow his plan anyway, why pray in the first place?? Kind of pointless don't you think.

God just doesn't give a fuck.

IMPRESSIVE LENGTH. TWO HOLLOW FANGS

Move carefully we don't want anything bad to happen to you, you never know. One step at a time when it comes to being honest and open with the people you love (you may still be a long long way out from outright telling them). As far as what you believe, you're essentially beginning a journey you will never end. Mankind may likely never be able to understand anything about god, doesn't really make sense for a finite being to understand something so infinite.

Of course, to each their own. I'm nonreligious but most of my friends are Christian, and we get along great. The trick is to not be a dick and to have respect for fellow human beings, regardless of their religious persuasions. Unless they practice Islam, in which case, maybe proceed with caution.

Agreed. Faith isn't something that needs to be bound by the dusty ancient tomes of dead men. Faith is much more alive than that, much more self-actualized. It's an individual thing and organized religions trying to force the same cookie-cutter views down peoples' throats doesn't do anyone any good.

Which is why I'm Episcopal, cause we literally don't give a shit.

Caits' friend replied "I struggled with that my whole life until I realized that God knew me better then I knew myself. This is who God made me." Does this post not seem pandering to anyone? It's the only post on the account, and it just seems to feed into the rhetoric too conveniently. "Anyone who thinks Muslims can assimilate in any society that isn't dominated by Islam is fucking insane" is a strange statement to make, and seems to be patently untrue.

It is painfully obvious that this post is fake. New account, only 1 post, panders to this subreddit's limited knowledge of islam like nobody's business... Hooooly shit it is painfully obvious. Mods are cucks for falling for this fake crap. 8 hours later and not a single follow-up comment from OP? Really? They made a permanently life-changing decision and that's it? No replies to any of the hundreds of supportive comments? Yep, seems legit!

I don't know whether I am an atheist now, but I'm definitely not a Muslim woman any more.

So... OP had a sex change? Who changes religion and states it by saying "I'm not a christian/muslim/hindi woman anymore"? That's such a weird way to put it. If you're not a muslim anymore, then you're not a muslim anymore. You don't qualify it by mentioning your sex. Normal people don't talk that way.

Like I said, this is fake as fuck.

Maybe I'm mistaken (I really do hope so), but isn't the apostasy in Islam absolutly forbidden and a sin that is only punishable with death?

Please pay attention and be safe!

Stay strong girl. And have fun. Do you.

You are very courageous. Please take self defense classes, shooting classes and most importantly stay very vigilant. Report anyone that you suspect may want to harm you. Sadly there are many honour killings by members of the Muslim community. It's going to get a lot worst for people like you before it gets better. The initial wave of anger directed against Trump will come your way and that can be very dangerous. Please be safe. Consider moving away and starting over in a different state if you're scared. You are an incredible inspiration to muslim women who feel trapped. The world needs you! Thank you for your courage. You have millions of Trump supporters behind you! Stay MAGA!

It doesn't bother me whether these posts are real or fake. Maybe someone is out there struggling to make this choice and seeing these threads show how supportive everyone is. That's a good thing.

Don't let anyone alive or dead tell you how to live.

Enjoy life it is short.

You have to go on your own "vision quest" and figure stuff out. There's a whole world to explore.

I personally found myself in absurdism, without it I would have probably offed myself years ago.

There are many places to turn to for faith that place don't restrict your lifestyle. And at the end of the day going to church isn't what defines your faith. Feel free to believe what you want in this wonderful country.

If you're interested in learning more about other philosophies, you can head over to /r/occult and see if an idea of non-religious spirituality appeals to you.

If not, welcome to the Trump Train either way.

Shocker - So many women coming out against an oppressive religion. Is there any sort of organized support groups that former islamic women can engage with?

I don't know whether I am an atheist now

You can be religious without subscribing to any particular organized religion. If you still believe in God, I'd recommend you do a bunch of research on the various other large world religions (Judaism, factions of Christianity, etc.) and even if you don't want to join any organization, the knowledge of their different faiths will still be useful to you in determining what your own is.

(Good) religion is never a one-size-fits-all thing. You gotta find the individual faith that will work best for you.

Good for you.

Please be careful. Your life may be in danger, even from your own friends and family.

You can still believe in God while not strictly following the guidelines. I actually believe religion is a good thing for a family structure, including Islam, but the insanity behind spreading it to countries and cultures that have absolutely nothing to do with it, and the arrogance, is the problem at hand.

I wish the best for you if your story is true.

Just remember that God loves you even if Mohammed didn't. Have fun, and live a good life. It's what anyone who loves you would want for you.

[–]aetate_divinamNY 1ポイント2ポイント  (0子コメント)

Good for you. I will say this... you don't have to abandon your belief in a Higher Power simply because you have strayed away from a religion. Religion needs God... God needs not religion.

Don't get yourself killed by your own family.

Not joking, a lot of muslim familymembers destroy the lives of those who left the cult. Either literally or through severe actions.

Y'all need to establish a "MUSLIMS FOR TRUMP" coalition to get the effing media to wake up.

My girlfriend is an atheist living in Iraq. From what she has told me. I totally understand what you are going through. Luckily though, there is a far superior culture to the Islamic culture. The worlds greatest culture, the American culture.

Living in Iraq? is she from there? shit I would never want to live there.

Agnostic is much better than atheism. Atheism makes just as much sense as any other religion.

Good luck to you, I hope you can still maintain your family ties, but be very careful who you confess this to.

Muslim men can be very chauvinistic when they lose what they perceive is one of "theirs", even though no such ownership exists.

Good. Good for you! Courage and HIGH ENERGY

Glad you were able to escape. It really is a repressive religion and I hope you finally get to experience life!

Just to provide you with some support and resources, you might want to check out the Recovering From Religion Foundation. I haven't used any of their resources but I hear about them quite often in the free thought movement.

Edit: In addition to the support that you can get from here, of course!

Welcome to self-applied liberation! You are AWESOME!

I've never really been a religious person before. I don't understand why people support religion, much less women. What's even more shocking to me is that women agree with the religious policies that hinder them. Some chick at my school doesn't want Hillary to be President. It's not because she has brain cells and can tell she's a piece of garbage, but because according to the Bible, women shouldn't hold positions of power.

TLDR: Don't support religion, especially if you're a woman.

Congrats on your decision!! I don't want to get into it here, but I left my religion for another 15 yrs ago. It was a different situation than yours, but I can kind of understand. I have no idea what it would be like to be Muslim, but I think you're very brave and hope you will be able to help others.

Look at the edit, this whole post was a troll.

I am glad you saw the light!

Hopefully many more will follow. It truly makes me sad to see how oppressed females are under islam and that in our land of the free. This shouldn't happen. And I can't wrap my head around why the leftist feminists feel the need to protect a religion that defends the polar opposite of what they stand for.

Grab a coat!

Congratulations.

That being said, the answer isn't in the other extreme. This is just my opinion but clubbing is a glorified mess. Don't let the shadow of Islam hang over your shoulders. Don't feel the need to party a lot, be with men, etc.. just because it's far removed from Islam. If that's what you really want, then go for it but don't let it be about going against Islam.

Be your own woman. Educate others on your experience. Happy to have you here :).

Yeah it's really sad , when I considered myself a left wing liberal I was openly athiest and dated some muslims in secret but I never really liked it when they kinda rationalized how the people in their culture treat basic interaction. Go be a normal human being timetodoitt and fuck liberals for defending bigotry.

Congrats but don't hate your life, you did nothing wrong.

On a serious note, go to r/exmuslim. I don't know your situation and it might not be too bad but a lot of people who leave islam go through hell with their family lives. Be careful and lie if you must.

I just want to say, you don't have to leave your entire faith behind. I am an agnostic so I'm not trying to convince you that's the correct thing. I do however think Islam needs people like you. Most other religions have plenty of more liberal views of things and they can pick and choose what to believe and they are not thrown out. You don't have to give up all the good to get away from the bad. I do understand your situation can be dangerous though, so I don't blame you for bailing out and in fact I think it's the best choice all around.

It's just really unfortunate that Islam can't handle alternate views as easily as other religions and that will never change if everyone like you leaves instead of fights for reform. So, if you still want to be Muslim the best way to do that is say you still are while doing all the things you want to do in life. Only if you can remain safe of course.

OP is confirmed a hot chick. All hot chicks are Trump supporters.

I'm sorry recent events hurt your faith. I hope, moving into the future, that perhaps a more westernized and modern form of Islam emerges, should that be what returns some degree of peace to you. I'm an atheist but I believe I understand some of what a faith gives people. As it stands, Islam is moving into the future but large segments (arguably larger than Judaism or Christianity) hold fairly fundamentalist views. I just hope we drag it into the 21st century, it evolves and we suppress its toxic elements as we have with nearly every other religious fundamentalist sect/traditions/views.

"Agnostic" is the term for people "on the fence" about religion.
