He rarely tries to beat his man and when he does try he usually isn't successful.

Not very good at crossing or passing in general.

His finishing is pretty bad for the most part.

He's just average. He's pretty pacey, runs a lot and positions himself nicely more often than not but you'd expect much more from a Manchester United right wing. If you think Lingard is good enough then you have really, really low standards. Shouldn't be more than a squad player.

Reminds me of a poorer version of Willian when he first joined Chelsea and was praised mainly for his pace and working hard. Then of course, he developed much more and became more consistent and a very good player.

Can Lingard do that? Sure. Will he? Let's hope. Very raw edges still so it's not a simple thing but given how hard he works on the field, we can hope he works hard on his other aspects and improves to a better level where he's a viable rotation option or even better.

Never said he WAS good enough. Just looking for what criticism he gets

[–]shinkag 2ポイント3ポイント  (0子コメント)

Well I've given you most of the criticism he gets, and you said you're still looking for a definitive answer which means you don't know whether he's good enough or not good enough yet. It's clear as day that he's not good enough to start for us, anybody that thinks otherwise is content with mediocrity (not referring to you there)

Because he's simply not at the level we need to compete at the top. He's also not a youngster anymore (turns 24 next season).

But don't confuse critisism for 'hate'.

I think he hasn't had enough competition for right wing otherwise he wouldn't be playing. Memphis and Martial have both been subpar on the right because they can't cut in.

Yes. He's obviously playing there for a lack of better options.

His best position is at #10.

Reckon he'll be sent on in the Summer?

[–]shinkag 4ポイント5ポイント  (1子コメント)

We'd be crazy to. I've given him a lot of criticism in the past but it'd be stupid to move him on. He'd be a decent squad player, probably won't kick up a fuss about playing time and can play a number of positions. We need players like him.

[–]FeezbullGiggs 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

Exactly. We need players happy to stay and actually work hard, offer a decent option (he is a decent option for certain situations and even better when stretching play etc) for games. And he's essentially free too so even better. You can't keep everyone happy if all are top level players either once they don't play enough.

It would seem odd that his best position is a number 10 as he isn't fantastic at those passes from what we've seen. But it'd be nice to see him there more and maybe show more quality too of course.

I don't think he'll be good as a #10 either, he should play cm and just harass players with his pace/tackling.

I think /u/shinkag hit the nail on the head with lingard.

I agree with what you're saying completely. My only reservation, however, is that he's still in his first full season at the top flight. I'm hoping (I'm an optimist) that he can take that experience and use it during the summer to adapt his game now that he has a better feel for this level of play. I wouldn't bet on it though.

Most people on here seem to be fine with him being part of the first team squad, just not a regular starter. I think he is certainly good enough to play a squad role

I don't think anyone hates Lingard; it's just that we realize he is simply not good enough for us to return to the top.

Do you think Lingard would start at Barca, Bayern, or RM? No, he, without a doubt, would not.

Yakshimash. I'm not how this translates from Kazhakstan but in Kazhakstan we say he is PUSS PUSS. Fragile. Weak. Makes good passes, pikes so many fucking chances. I have faith he gets 1 more goal and 5 more pikes.

Jencuya.

I am not saying he is or is not good enough but is everyone not entitled to their opinion? Especially when it comes to football

[–]TheFoz92[S] -4ポイント-3ポイント  (1子コメント)

I'm not saying that. I'm not criticizing anyone's opinion. Just looking for elaboration

[–]BarbadosDM 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

Well I for one do not think he does have the ability. I do like him but just do not think he is really of the quality of a top side.

Why has everyone given Lingard the 'not-good-enough' verdict at this stage already? Yes, he is 23 turning 24 soon, but I don't think he should be benchmarked purely based on his age group.

Prior to Moyes & LVG's era, when Lingard was still around the age of the current batch of U21s, the team under SAF was so stocked up with talent. There was Nani, Valencia & even Young (all in their prime) who could all play on the right wing. Rather than not being good enough, it was more probable that Lingard didn't break into the first team due to the lack of opportunities & hence loaned out.

When Moyes came, Januzaj stole the limelight with his excellent debut season. Most of SAF's squad were still present hence Lingard was still stuck with the U21s & sent on loan again.

LVG saw potential in Lingard when he came in, played him in the first PL match of the season, and the injury ruined the rest of his season.

And yet, despite all these setbacks & a lack of first-team experience, he has stayed grounded, waited for his opportunity, finally broke into the team this season, scored a couple of amazing goals (I really enjoyed the volley against Chelsea), and played some positive football in the United shirt.

Yes, he is not adept at dribbling. Yes, his passing & finishing needs some refining. But while you criticise him, remember that this is his debut season for United in a league he has never played in before.

If anything, Lingard deserves the utmost support of the fans. He may never going to become good enough, but if fans give up on him so soon, we may come to regret it when he matures into a great player at his prime in a few years.
