Here an example of the Replace VAT Film
on the Photocentric 3D Liquid Crystal printer.
I suppose OLO uses a similar technique to be sure it is kept resin-tight.
This would require some meters of tape additionally, not mentioned by now.

I'm pulling out - one $79 super early bird freed up. I commented with a minor criticism and a question, with a link to a comparison image of the 'egg' vs. the sphere (comment still visible on my profile page). Instead of a reasoned reply, or just ignoring it, that comment, and any subsequent (related?) ones were purged from the update. Having been burnt on Zano, I'm not willing to risk the same here. Good luck to all who stick with it, and I hope you get a great product in the end despite appearances.

I've been silently observing and reading through all the comments and I too am very worried about this project for the same reasons as everyone else. The lack of meaningful updates and total radio silence in the comments by the creators are very disconcerting. It's not enough to only communicate via private messages and emails as they claim to be doing. It's important to have a public presence to at least show some level of concern for the backers. I've backed a significant number of projects and even on the bad ones this type of non-communicative behavior normally only occurs after the project has already closed. With this happening DURING the project, I shudder to think of how they'll treat everyone after the project closes and they receive their funds.

I've backed dozens of projects and have gone through my fair share of both great projects and terrible ones. For the latter I've backed the Coolest, Zano, and the iBox printer among others, and all of those were spectacular failures. Even suffered through NudeAudio Super-M (though at least I got my speakers in the end, albeit over a year later after constant emails and empty promises, and flat out lies in project updates; didn't even get the right colors either but at least I got the rewards unlike so many other unfortunate backers). This project really looks like it's going down that road given the utter lack of concern and communication from the creator. Not sure how much longer I'm going to stick around as I'm worried I'll just be throwing my money away again.
Thank you to all of your involved and concerned backers that are posting here though. Appreciate all of the discussion that's taking place as it's really helping me make up my mind whether to stay in this project or leave.

    6. Francesco about 2 hours ago

@Jim, i believe the project is passed the point that not showing more will have amain impact. I am sure that if they keep things as they are (minor changes and minor FAQ updates) they will still get above 2M.
And this is the sad thing, right now they can afford to stay silent and do nothing about questions coming, in the end, from a small minority, Majority has bought in it and accept they will figure out things later ... maybe.

    7. Jim Tommy Myhre Kjexrud about 2 hours ago

Oh I'm sure they are trying to. If they're having some issues (Which I think they do) I'm sure they're frantically trying to have it sorted out so they can convince the crowd.
If not then the project is doomed already. I just hope they're not chilling about because of the high number of backers. I'm sure they want to sell more after it's released too :)
And the idea behind this is genious, very awesome and shows a lot of potential. I just hope they will succeed.
Just worries me sick with the silence and information being held back. I feel a KS should be open and honest with its backers who are helping them succeed. Not doing so makes it hard to support.

    8. Zaniel Dantas about 2 hours ago

@Andrew you not alone, but they still have 19 days to show us something and I think they will. I prefer to believe at least they are trying.

    9. Andrew May about 2 hours ago

I've tried to remain positive about this project but it is starting to worry me. I think the olo guys could learn a thing or two from the uniz slash. I'll keep my pledge for now but they will want to provide some serious proofs in the next couple of weeks.

    10. Jim Tommy Myhre Kjexrud about 3 hours ago

Also one more thing, it's clearly problematic for them to print. Because they have known for a good while now that everyone wants more examples. And nothing has been shown besides that one eggshaped print they already had a timelapse from.
And by the time that image was shown, they could have one or two more prints done by now. It's their product so I'm sure they have dedicated phones available.

So my bet is that they're trying to fix it before showing anything else, and that means they have time-pressure hanging on their backs. I'm just afraid that it'll result in more mockups if they can't sort it out in time.

      (But the silence..)

I too are a bit worried about the cloud based obstacle. One would think that it could be made a third party app afterwards though to push prints through phone memory instead. But it's likely to take a while, if it were to happen at all. And it's probably not something OLO would approve of. They probably want to benefit from it somehow.

    11. Saeed Khan about 3 hours ago

I'm also rather worried about this cloud based slicer and the responses from OLO to questions about it. i.e. what if the servers go down or are taken off line etc.

Given the success of the campaign, it would make sense for OLO to publish the specs of their proprietary format so that people can create alternative methods to get the data into the device, or even add support for other OSs as needed.

There is no real benefit to the cloud based slicer in the long run. In the short term it may be an easy way for OLO to go to market, but is not very good for customers.

    12. Jim Tommy Myhre Kjexrud about 3 hours ago

@Mike Kabala Well yeah, I agree, and they should talk about the calibration process as well. But the thing that bothers me the most with this is that they're not mentioning it and we have to figure it out by analyzing it. I'm confident that over 50% of the backers just naively trusts the video. And why shouldn't they. (I know, I know)
The update they posted doesn't state anything about distortion or explaining why etc. It's passed out as, "here's an egg, it's nice. This is what we printed but you won't get to look at the file for comparison"

If this was my campaign I'd at least tell the reason and that this was something that was still in progress of fixing. I would not feel so alarmed if the developers were openly explaining these types of things. It's a work in progress so ofcourse everything isn't perfect yet. But the silence is alarming. I'll hold on for a little while, but the chance of me canceling my pledge gets higher for each hour.

At the least this is some of the reason I think they're holding back on showing us prints that are easily recognizable

    13. Mike Kabala about 3 hours ago

@Emanuel K, the reason I think the egg shape is a mistake is that the image was posted without any description. In the absence of information, it's easy to assume the worst.

    14. The Cepparian about 3 hours ago

Lool, you are right, in the timelapse it's the sphere to be chosen and in the end an egg popped out :D

    15. Sebastian about 4 hours ago

Totally forgot to mention. The Zano drone wouldn't start to take off until it had contacted the servers to check for calibration and whatever. So an Olo printer that was totally cloud dependend would be a no-go for me.
@Emanuel - haven't read any official statements yet about the egg, where are they?

    16. Emanuel K. about 4 hours ago

Ok i read some comments now, they told officiell that it was not intended? hm thats hm bad ...

      Sorry for my bad english...

    17. Sebastian about 4 hours ago

Don't know if I got the FAQ right, but is it possible to convert my 3D objects on my computer and send it to my phone and print without the cloud based service?

Cloud based services ring an alarm bell in my head. Have to think of the Zano drone which totally failed. The few people that got one were not able to fly any more after Zano filed bankruptcy and had to shut down their servers.

    18. Emanuel K. about 4 hours ago

Why is everybody thinking this EGG is a mistake? It was realeased short after eastern, so it fits. And if someone just scaled it in a 3D software so its a EGG and no Ball anymore i am fine with it....

I dont get it why do you think its not like intended!??

    19. Francesco about 4 hours ago

Well, a lot of other projects have been very open and communicative. Even print model suggested by backers to prove they have something that works and how. Here we saw one possible print, lot of fake ones. A ribbon for a mock-up as stated by several people that were at the Maker Fair ...
.. and still 10k+ people find it ok to part with 100/150$. Incredible

    20. Daniel Svegert about 4 hours ago

Yes, because the app needs to compensate for the screen ppi. Otherwise the object will be, well, egg shaped. Or squished.
Well, they got two weeks to work out the kinks, show a proper timelapse print + highres photo and convince me to stay. :D

    21. Mogens Kjær about 4 hours ago

@Mike Kabala. Very well put. These are my concerns exactly. I don't doubt that a product like OLO can be made. But I NEED honesty. Otherwise I'm out of here.

    22. Mike Kabala about 4 hours ago

I'm not overly concerned that the part turned out oblong rather than spherical. However, I would like to know if the software allows us to calibrate the machine so that the axes come out evenly. It would have been better if they had offered some description along with the photograph. It is important that they come up with a part that is rendered with proper proportions prior to the end of the funding period.

I would have preferred it if they had been honest and said something like, "Here is a photograph of an actual part that was produced on an OLO printer. The object was supposed to be spherical, but came out egg shaped due to a miscalibration between the xy and z axes. When you receive your OLO printer, you will be able to calibrate it to your phone so that these proportions come out even."

That would have reassured me that they are aware of the problems with the object and are working on ways to correct it. Just publishing the photo without any explanation adds to my doubts about the quality of this whole project.

    23. Edward Farkhiev about 4 hours ago

Hey all, dropping my super earlybird. I'll wait for the final product. Not really interested in all the drama of the after-campaign. Have at it!

    24. Mogens Kjær about 4 hours ago

As jim says the print was clearly meant to be round.
The good news is that it probably just a matter of tweaking the layer height.
The bad news is that they haven't even started tweaking their prototype yet. And they expect to deliver a finished product that will work with all phone models in just half a year...

Regarding the supposed sagging on the picture, I think it is just a visual effect. The ball is shown at a slight angle. Combined with the fact that layers are much more visible at the top and bottom where the angle is steep.

    25. Xenotrim about 5 hours ago

@Jim, You are completely correct, thanks for pointing that out

    26. Maarten Holkers about 5 hours ago

Bailing out, 79$ pledge free in a few moments. Decided to back the other 3D printer on KS, feels more save and reproducible in output.

    27. Jim Tommy Myhre Kjexrud about 5 hours ago

In the timelapse you can clearly see a perfectly round ball selected and the outcome of it being eggshaped.

    28. Jim Tommy Myhre Kjexrud about 5 hours ago

Well, the "egg" that's printed looks like the one from the timelapse, my first thought was that it is. And my concern is that it looks like it should be perfectly spherical, like the red one they use tape to make it look printed. And that it's stretched during print.
Say they tried to print a 2x2x2 cm Square.
It makes me believe that it would come out as 2x2x5 or something like that.
That's why I want to see what file they're printing and the outcome with it. Or a file that we can see from tinkercad or thingieverse (Like the ones I linked earlier, which also will show different aspects of quality to the printer)

    29. Daniel Svegert about 6 hours ago

It's like lifting a bed sheet in the middle and expecting it to hang in the air like a plywood sheet. :)

    30. Daniel Svegert about 6 hours ago

@3DPrint.Toys Of course there will be visible stepping. It's like drawing a line without antialiasing at 0.1 degrees. But that is not my point. Those first layers are pulled on and thicker than the rest. At the tenth step, the layers suddenly start to get thin and even. The first 8 or so can't even be called steps. More like 8 lines perpendicular to a slope. Supports may have resulted in a better result.

    31. 3DPrint.Toys about 6 hours ago

      @Daniel Svegert

After looking at the image of the Egg the left side of the image is a lot more blurry due to the focal length on the photo and therefore does not show the "stepping" that you see on the right-hand side that is in focus.

Any curved surface is going to show significant "stepping" especially when it is print with a Z-axis of 100 microns (which is what this egg is printed at). This egg is obviously printed without supports so the starting curve is never going to look that good. Considering that the OLO can go up to 35 Microns is positive because that with significantly reduce the appearance of "stepping". Longer print times though.

Here are some things I recalled but have not been able to quickly re-find.
Another company approached Olo with a resin product that was suited for it. I recall that opened up additional materials then they had originally conceived. Was that company Photocentric? I don't remember.. but..
Photocentric has a YouTube channel, and they feature an oddly similar printer, the "Liquid Crystal 3D Polymer Printer", which uses light from an LCD screen, for $799. Aside from some things not being so streamlined as the Olo is, It makes use of a red hood so you can see your print while filtering light. But perhaps because Olo's resin needing to be used with standard phone screens, it was made more sensitive and could not use even a red hood?

      Here's a video of Photocentric's print. https://www.youtube.com/watch…

Clearly Olo is designed to remove/solve some of the work involved compared to what the Photocentric printer does. They have additional videos, thought they aren't that old. Wasn't Olo already a thing before these videos? It seems competition worthy, but Photocentric says they have no problem with Olo. I'm wondering if these companies are more intertwined that it appears. Or am I missing something?

Also, that "it's was printed wrong" egg shape.. it's the same as the one they printed in the cutaway video... which the color of, is the same as in the Photocentric videos.

Photocentric's printer uses supports, and with aiming Olo to casual consumers, they are probably trying to avoid supports... which makes the egg shape make more sense, because the egg as printed, has more vertical support without having to add any.
But I'm new, and never used a 3D printer, and open to input. :)

Will this image be able to be printed in this printer?

    36. Francesco about 7 hours ago

A resin printer can print it with supports. Assuming OLO exists, it will as well :-)

    37. Vincent Elder about 7 hours ago

Can the OLO print asymmetrical objects with weird centres of gravity?

    38. Mogens Kjær about 7 hours ago

      @Syed Luqman Ali Shah
It is nice that you post these relevant videos. But could you please write a few words in the text as well, so we don't click on the same videos over and over again?

    39. Daniel Svegert about 7 hours ago

When studying the image of the latest egg, one can se that the top layers (on the far right) are stretched out and saggy. Look at the layers just above where the egg is snapped off of the print bed. They are not parallell. Looks like jell-o. :D Perhaps that is what's happening when not using supports. The very thin layers just can't hang by themselves in the air, and droops down and touch the film while next layer is hardened.

    40. Robert Austin about 8 hours ago

Does anyone know anything about the OLO Tab they mentioned in the latest FAQ? I cannot find anything else about it and I am having trouble justifying backing this now that I know in a year or so they will release one that has a bigger printing capacity.

    41. Banni Ibrahim about 9 hours ago

      @GARNIER Romain
      @JJ
To be honest, I am not holding my breath for Windows Phone support. Not the first time I heard of a device that promised iOS, Android, and Windows Phone (Or even BlackBerryOS back when they were their own OS) support and then wound up only supporting iOS and Android.

    42. Detlev Stahl about 9 hours ago

      The danger is always there.
During the printing process, the part may come loose and fall into the resin when the focus is unfavorable to the attachment site.
Even when you lift the upper part can abut the printed part.
If the phone is not parallel to the upper deck attachment to the upper plate will be only weakly.

    43. The Cepparian about 9 hours ago

@SlimJim yes, that bottom part is my concern, resin apply a weight over the film and if it's not firmly attached (adhesive? pressed?) I fear it could leak over the phone when you remove that part at the end of the print.

    44. Francesco about 9 hours ago

@detlev, I am loving those cars!

    45. SlimJim about 9 hours ago

@Cepparian, the printed part is not attached to the film. It's attached to the print plate. After the print is done, you open the printer and the printed object sits on the print plate which is part of the top of the printer with the motors, electronics, etc. The resin is in the bottom container which is the part that sits over your phone.

    46. Detlev Stahl about 9 hours ago

for such models I wanted to use the OIO. The cars are 40 mm long and the space of the OIO would have been ideal. The models and many others, I have developed.
