If this thing is actually released with all advertised specs, it would be a total flagship killer. Id ditch my N5 for one.

EDIT: Apparently this phone has some kind of "Power Saving chip". I quote from a PhoneArena article : "The battery is 3,100mAh, and thanks to a power-saving chip, Saygus says you will get the same performance a 4,600mAh battery might provide"

EDIT 2: More info on the "power-saving chip, according to chief technology officer Tim Riker, dynamically lowers the backlight while adjusting the image to help preserve image quality while saving power."

"Power-saving chip" sounds a lot like bullshit, the only real methods it could use to reduce power consumption is controlling how the screen is drawn (dynamic framerate etc.), or lowering processor performance.

I want to see someone teardown the phone and get nice high-resolution pictures of all the ICs. I have a feeling that the placebo-chip will have the surface sanded smooth though.

Sony z3 dedicates a gig of ram to the screen and that massively helps with battery. Could it do something like that?

I'm not sure how a framebuffer that big would help, you wouldn't have to have the GPU draw new frames if nothing happened but newer display controllers have their own memory. Guess we'll just have to wait for someone to poke around it.

The only issue I can see with it is that its using a Snapdragon 801 processor, and the 810 is starting to be released in production phones. It won't be able to compete in terms of raw power once other manufacturers release their next-gen flagships.

Yeah I agree it would be nice to have a newer SoC, however after seeing all of the heat and throttling problems with the 810, maybe this is the best option.

I'm sure Qualcomm will have it worked out by the time major flagships start to launch, but as for the V2 they should have at least put in an 805.

[–]MonochronosMoto X | Lollipop 1

The differences between the 801 and 805 are relatively insignificant in real world usage though. I definitely agree it should have the latest and greatest if it is wanting to go toe-to-toe with the big boys for only $100 less.

The differences aren't huge, but I think it would help at least a little bit with futureproofing. I understand why they didn't use the Snapdragon 810, but they shouldn't use a chipset that's almost a year old. They should have delayed launch until the 810 was ready for prime time or at least put in an 805. The 801 is okay for now, but later this year when 2015 flagships launch with the 810, this phone wont be competitive at only $100 less.

i don't know about flagship KILLER, it'll definitely challenge flagships especially nexii because of being stock android and unlocked. However, we don't know price yet, unless it comes in under 500$ i wouldn't say it'll kill any flahships.

[–]CygnusgamingNexus 6 Cloud White 1

The article said around $100 less than a typical flagship. So around $550 then

550$ is enough to make it a contender, but to compete with a name brand

One interesting note that was not mentioned earlier:

One more added benefit to the dual microSD card slots is that not only do they boost the device for storage purposes, the device also allows you to boot from the microSD card slot. This allows users more freedom to use multiple operating systems and ROMs.

You could already technically do this with ROMs

FWIW (personally) I'm not aware of any device in (at least) the past 2-3 years that allows you to have a ROM both installed and booted directly from a microSD card. That usually requires a really low level ability in the bootloader itself (which as we know in most cases you would have to modify if anything - if the device even allowed to you flash a custom bootloader that is).

The Nook Color would always try to boot from the SD card first. Made the thing damn near unbrickable.

It's not a device thing. There's software that will let you do it on some devices (surprisingly big list actually): https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tassadar.multirommgr&hl=en

i feel like multirom is under appreciated. Lets you try out any rom you want with no commitment, just flash it as a secondary rom and see if you like it without having to touch your existing Rom. I like trying out alpha/beta builds but don't want something unproven as a daily driver, so it's fantastic to keep my rock solid 4.4 rom for everyday use while being able to boot into the new lollipop builds on a whim to try out new stuff.

[–]MitchKellLG G3 - Illusion 6.0, Nexus 7 stock 5.0 1

Such a great idea, only isn't compatible with the G3. I hate the low level of ROMs and ROM support because of the locked boot loader. Almost makes me want to get the N6 instead.

In some strange fashion, I am just impressed this is coming from a Utah company

Right? I expected this to be some Chinese upstart company.

The only thing is, we've seen too many vaporphones...I think we will never know until it is actually in the stores or in consumer hands. But, it is interesting to have 320GB storage.

I was 90% sure I'd be buying a Galaxy S6 this year but if this thing delivers on performance and is actually available to buy, I'd probably get it instead. Two microsd card slots is just too cool; imagine if it has a removable battery to.

Further on in the article it says it has a removable battery.

And built-in QI charging. At this point, I don't give a shit how much this phone costs, if it's compatible with Wind Mobile (Canada), I'm buying one. Domestically or abroad, I don't give a fuck. I'mma get me a superphone with nary a rival in sight.

Neat. Run the dual SD slots in RAID 0 and I'd be hella impressed.

[–]Pokemon_Name_RaterSiemens C45i 10ポイント11ポイント  (0子コメント)

Consider that the first iPhone was, what, 7 years ago? Smartphones as ubiquitous as they are are still pretty fucking new... and yet here we are actually talking in relatively feasible terms about stuff like RAID for phones. That's just... kinda neat.

Also... I just realised what this is putting me in mind of: the unrealised Ubuntu Edge.

Whoa is that potentially possible on a phone?

It would be a software raid. It would be pretty easy to set something like that up with root.

That's really interesting, made this phone a lot more appealing for me.

Obviously someone would have to make an app or something for that phone. If devs don't like that phone it might not happen. I'm just saying it's possible.

Why would you want RAID0?

I dunno. Just because? I can't imagine it would be much faster than the internal memory but I could sure brag about it a lot.

Wow I really hope this comes to Verizon...if so, I think I found the phone I finally want to replace my GSIII with.

You should know by now that we don't get fun phones like this on Verizon. Honestly, there's no use in hoping.

Looks nice and beefy. Wonder if it will make it to European markets...

It could catch some market with that front camera.

How would this work with stock android? It had to be a custom ROM for the sd card support.

fractal antenna is really interesting.

from the comments section, it seems to also include and IR transmitter. if i could program this to be a universal remote for all my Tv's, receivers, etc... i would be really interested. really hoping some of the flagships start making an effort with making smartphones replace all the remotes we have laying around.

The HTC One phones have IR transmitters and can be programmed to be a Universal Remote.

[–]MitchKellLG G3 - Illusion 6.0, Nexus 7 stock 5.0 4

And Samsung above the s4 and newer LGs. This is becoming a standard.

I really hope this is as legit as it sounds. I would hate for this product to be hyped and then be dragged down in a bunch of controversies and build quality/customer service issues like the opo.

Now if only they had a 5.5" version for me...
