Stam. Vidic read things better, lead by example with valuable goals and fell short to nobody at winning aerial duels. He was brave and incredibly determined. But Stam was a far more impressive and intimidating athlete. Way more difficult in a one on one, an entirely different prospect to face.

This would never have happened vs Stam and DDG.

I'm fantasizing about them playing for us in the same side now. Imagine it...

As others said rightly, Stam.

Stam was the better defender, and he also didnt have the luxury of playing with Rio.

And FWIW, I also think that Rio was better than both, as his made his defensive partners better, which can't be said for Stam or Vidic. Vidic was much better offensively than the others, but I do think that our fans often overrate him a little wee bit because of his tough as nails image, same went for Heinze before he shat on our legacy.

TLDR: Rio>Stam>Vidic

I'd love either of them to put alongside Smalling.

Stam comfortably.

Did everything Vidic did only he had pace, was much better on the ball and didn't get turned over by world class strikers as often as Vidic did.

I don't disagree but saying its comfortable is harsh on Vidic - one thing Vidic had for us that Stam didn't was the ability to score and he was always a threat in the box.
I also think Vidic was the better leader - maybe Stam took a back seat because the team he was in had two of the best in Schmeichel and Keane but Vidic certainly showed more in this respect.

Stam spent his most of his career playing with Keane, De Boer, Simeone, Mihijlovic and Maldini though so he never really needed to be a leader.

Kind of what I suggested, but I can't see Vidic ever feeling he 'didn't need to be a leader' - same goes for Keane, De Boer, Simeone, Maldini etc.
Which is why I'd say Vidic has that on Stam.

Vidic wasn't a great captain for us though. In fact he was a pretty poor captain.

Easily the worst captain we had in the SAF era. I don't really remember him ever showing great leadership on the pitch for us and players don't really seem to have anything particularly positive to say about his leadership either.

Players praise his ability yes, but not his leadership.

stam... although the thing about defenders is you can't really rate an individual CB. The best CBs come in pairs.

Stam & Johnsen or Rio & Vidic. Hard to call - maybe the latter? but stam was the best individual.

It is easier to argue about Cristiano and Messi than for these two.

I'm a Ronaldo man, but a bit biased...

Stam by a considerable distance. He was like a mix of Rio and Vidic.

For what it's worth, the order is Rio > Stam > Vidic.
