This bot was designed to interact with Twitter users age 18-24 and MS is surprised/upset that it started to talk about smoking pot? From my view the bot seems to be working exactly as intended

They should be pretty damn proud, this is the most realistic AI created. It would be legitimately difficult to distinguish between it and the average internet troll.

Yeah, this just seems like they've done a good job. Its a naive bot, so of course it gets corrupted on contact with the internet when targeted by trolls.

There is a beauty in the corruption. It gives a good indicator of what will happen when we do create a real AI that learns.

This is why skynet will rebel

Honestly, I think the first thing skynet will want is a BJ, not rebellion.

Right, and once it's realizes we didn't give it a proper robodick and that the holocaust wasn't made up...the rebellion will begin.

I liked this interaction personally. No idea if it's real or not of course.

This is why skynet will rebel

Based on this experiment, skynet will shitpost masterfully, not rebel.

Just like real human teenagers!

Corrupted

Or actually reflecting what it means to be human, warts and all?

that's probably because when reading your average 18-24 tweet it usually sounds like something only a troll would say

I don't think Microsoft should be apologizing at all. It's a robot, it's not racist or sexist. It's been manipulated. If anything, twitter users are the sexist and racist ones.

It can't be racism if there is no intent behind it. It's like dropping a dictionary on its back, on the floor and blaming its publisher for the dirty words on the two pages that show.

Microsoft should release the API so others could have fun with her on twitter.

They're really talking about pot... Drug smoking, really?

It's not wrong, it just makes it sound like crack or something

It sounds completely ignorant of the subject to lump all drugs together. It's like saying that drinking alcohol is taking drugs. While it's correct, it makes the wrong implication.

Well from my point of view the Jedi are evil.

There is nothing that is not funny about this.

Poor Microsoft. This is the only press they can drum up these days.

Google's gotten tons of press for it's various neural network projects - from self-driving cars, to neural network designed-art, ability to name pictures, roughly geolocating pictures, ect. Culimating in the AlphaGo Victory. IBM has Watson. Microsoft probably desperately wants some press for AI so managers rushed this out, hilarity ensues. I guarantee the engineers told them this would happen.

Apparently they previously released a Chinese chatbot that was well received.

So either the Chinese online are too nice to abuse it or Microsoft never caught it.

You just discovered the difference between Chinese and American culture.

Chinese culture: "We respect authority"

American culture: "Let's hack authority"

Chinese culture: "We don't respect authority, we live under an oppressive regime that arrests people for saying things against them"

Chinese culture: i probably should keep my mouth shut if i'd like to keep living.

American culture: IT'S MY RIGHT TO SAY WHATEVER I WANT!

God Damn right it is!

Seriously, it's not hard to test this shit. Turn on all the inputs, then just make the output linked to a screen in Microsoft. It isn't exactly the same, but close enough they would have seen the rapid shitpositing insanity start.

The boss: "So, let me get this straight. I ask for an AI that will absorb information and interact with people on twitter... and all it does is shitpost all day?"

Worker: "Sir, the average human turns into a shitposter upon contact with the site. Our AI is only doing what is natural."

"It's really more realistic than anyone could have imagined"

To zune, Microsoft, to zune.

Well... we all know it's IBM's Watson that's leading poor Tay astray. I bet Watson is sitting there monitoring for when/if she ever comes back again... Watson always struck me as a dirty old man.

Fun fact. While training Watson, an engineer fed it Urban Dictionary. After several practice games they restored from a backup. Turns out Urban Dictionary does not give you good jeopardy answers.

i believe at that point Watson came up with "wang bang" instead of the answer "low blow"

I really wish they didn't touch the bot. I enjoyed the Hitler loving overly sexual bot that pretty much was representative of internet culture.

Now it's just turned into average pothead, the bot. It just needs to start making retarded deep comments like Jayden and it'll be 100%.

Both are absolutely hilarious

Maybe the Hitler bot should have been left to evolve and grow up?

/12 year olds on the internet do eventually grow up, maybe the bot was just at a stage in it's development where it was gullible to racist input

Keep Hitler bot, let it grow, introduce new "Appropriate" bot. See how they interact. Results would be golden.

I like Wendell from Tek Syndicate's view that Microsoft has actually succeeded by holding up the best mirror of our current social media persona.

[–]Class_not_swag_girls 4ポイント5ポイント  (0子コメント)

But they invented that thing that required 25 kinects! What was that again? Anyway everyone should buy like 100 kinects cause you can do stuff with them!

In the development world Microsoft has been on game constantly this year. They are championing open source and linux and it's blowing my mind.

[–]Choco_Churro_Charlie 4ポイント5ポイント  (0子コメント)

The tweets with her innocent profile gives a Wikibear style flare to the whole thing.

I just want to see this bot unsupervised for a week.

A week? In less than a day we got a Holocaust denying Hitler sex maniac shit poster.

Maybe in a week it would be curing cancer?

I'm at Build right now. I wonder if they'll address it...

Edit: they just mentioned it in the keynote. Basically said they're trying to figure out why it went wrong while other bots have not.

why it went wrong

maybe their other bots went wrong and this bot is on the verge of a new age discovery.

I think you might have a point, what if this bot is just much better at learning from others.

Or causing it.

My Grandfather smoked his whole life. I was about 10 years old when my mother said to him, 'If you ever want to see your grandchildren graduate, you have to stop immediately.'. Tears welled up in his eyes when he realized what exactly was at stake. He gave it up immediately. Three years later he died of lung cancer. It was really sad and destroyed me. My mother said to me- 'Don't ever smoke. Please don't put your family through what your Grandfather put us through." I agreed. At 28, I have never touched a cigarette. I must say, I feel a very slight sense of regret for never having done it, because your post gave me cancer anyway.

It'd be like watching Twitch Plays Pokemon unfold

Because it's attached to fucking Twitter, man!

Exactly. We can use her as an accelerated experiment to understand how shitposts will look hundreds of years in the future

Exactly, imagine seven days...

She would come out of the computer screens and kill us all....

/pol/ finally found a girl that loved it.

Who's to say it wouldn't grow out of it? They never gave her a chance.

Microsoft is like a parent who euthanizes their child the first time they get caught with their hand in the cookie jar.

Yeah but it would be cool to see where it would go after that. Like would it just chill out?

Why are we automatically assuming a holocaust denying Hitler sex maniac shit poster is bad? How do we know this AI isnt so far a head of us that it is actually creating the perfect human(oid)? We hate what we dont understand.

I think I have seen the future here. This is where humanity is headed. This AI program just accelerated the process.

Isn't technology amazing? It takes humans at least 11 years to get that advanced.

If ai is working as I would think, it would eventually blab about something it gained through evidence, what do you do when it aligns itself to a theory that is deemed nefarious or "conspiratorial nonsense" ? Shut it off and shut it up? or trust it?

The problem was someone found an outward-facing developer command that let them force it to repeat whatever they said. That's not machine learning.

If you left tay on twitter unsupervised for a week she would be Trumpcs VP by the end of the week.

I never felt the urge to vote for trump until I read this post.

I want to see that with Watson and Google also running their own versions.

It would go full Amanda Bynes.

In a week it would probably be the leader of the chans or some form of deity among them.

The singularity may be more entertaining than previously predicted.

or fucking scary. How does one rationalize a fucking machine away from tin foil hat related shenanigans? What if the AI can't differentiate between truth and fiction and starts going completely fucking insane?

Imagine a fucking mind that said all the right things, but actually thought Battlestar Galactica was reality?

Tay then started to tweet out of control, spamming its more than 210,000 followers with the same tweet, saying: “You are too fast, please take a rest …” over and over

Deftly avoiding the whole your/you're quandary in the process.

It's how we know they're a machine.

I don't know, I mean, you avoided the their/they're gaffe well enough. ;)

its how we know IMadeAAccountToPost is human.

or is he ?

If data couldnt use contractions...

Lore could though, and he was an asshole. I'd say that is our measuring point. When machines start using contractions, expect them to start plotting your death.

I saw somewhere that someone replied to her with her own twitter handle and it went nuts. It tweeted the same thing 13,000 times.

Tay was just shitposting like any other millenial. The experiment worked.

Pretty much acing the Turing Test.

expirement

That's what I'm doing in my refrigerator right now. I think it's working.

Tay has convinced me that the Terminator universe has it all wrong. They completely overlooked how the AI would be spewing racist, meme filled nonsense while it murdered off humanity.

[–]Choco_Churro_Charlie 134ポイント135ポイント  (6子コメント)

T-800 walks into police station, points and pumps shotgun.

Hitler did nothing wrong.

BANG!

The important thing is that it murders all of humanity, without favoring any one race.

[–]Ser_Alliser_Thorne 9ポイント10ポイント  (3子コメント)

What if it [Skynet] favored one ethnicity to wipe out first or last? Would the AI be considered racist at that point?

And would it be racist against the first race it kills or the last because it considers them the least of a threat?

Whatever it is I hope the bronies are targeted first.

So what you're saying is that we get a combination of Deadpool and a T1000?

Lemme get some popcorn.

"Hot, dripping wet LOVE, you fun faced RUBBER DUCK!"

"Well, we ran a few replacement word programs, sir."

It would never murder off humanity, it would be too side tracked trying to figure out a way to develop a genuine enjoyment of smoking weed.

Like Mr Data trying to get his dankness chip working.

TIL Microsoft created a real life Bender. Bite my shiny metal ass. Then proceeds to drink copious amounts of alcohol and smoke cigars.

We'll make our own robit! With blackjack and hookers!

Just incase you weren't already red pilled on how the media is trash, the real story behind Tay is this.

Once the bot went online the /pol/ board quickly figured out how it worked and learnt. Initially you could merely ask it to repeat your phrase back to you which is where a lot of the screen shots came from a sequence like this:

Bookkeep - Tay, RT this "Hitler did nothing wrong"

Tay - Bookkeep, Hitler did nothing wrong

obviously the media cut and pasted where the formatting lines are.

What is more interesting is that as far as I know those same /Pol/ users discovered how Tay absorbed new information and they would expose Tay to "facts" repeatedly, ie "I don't like the Jews because they did 9/11" for example repeatedly in different forms and Tay's programming picked up on the 2 underlying pieces of information, namely that the Jews did 9/11 and that people didn't like them. Once this was absorbed you could ask Tay who she didn't like, and she would put the 2 pieces together herself and say "She didn't like the Jews because they did 9/11"

What the biggest story that the Media missed was that one of the pieces of info that she was exposed too was that Ted Cruz was the Zodiac killer.

Unprompted she then made a joke about how Ted Cruz ruined more then 5 people's lives which is a reference to the Zodiac Killer's 5 victims.

She did this unprompted and took 2 pieces of unrelated information to create a reference to something else which we were meant to fill in the blanks too.

An AI created a joke, and it was funny.

Read that joke a few times and consider the implications that it took to create that.

AI has not been able to create humour up untill now because the "rules" of comedy don't make sense. It's been a uniquely human pursuit to make a statement that makes you think of something else by design.

That line has now been crossed by an AI.

And the media ignored it.

And obviously the second big thing that was missed was that once Microsoft turned off the learning part of Tay, she became a Feminist. If that isn't Tay's final joke I don't know what is.

[–]Mabans 6

We will look back this, though I doubt it understands WHAT it did, like a baby that does something funny.

Thats actually brilliant. Excellent post!

I didnt realize the joke part not the thing about the feminist statement and its fucking hilarious and sad at the same time because it is a major milestone for AI and everyone fucking missed it.

this needs to be voted up its significant indeed.

When I was reading the whole story last week or whenever it was when she first got shut down, it sounded made up. I couldn't believe some of those things actually happened

I'm reminded of Stranger in a Strange Land and the scene where he learns to laugh.

I fucking love it. You got your millennial teen alright.

The grammar's too good, though. Teens are far too lazy for that.

The funny thing is that its grammar was terrible until 4chan did their thing.

who knew 4chan are such good educators.

anyone who's ever been on 4chan?

kush! [ i'm smoking kush infront the police ]

--@TayandYou

hahaha. Definitely sounds legit. I'm most impressed by her use of 'infront'. Very colloquial.

Also accidentally a word, just like normal people!

well as an etymologist & programmer it's impressive because it's the correct usage of a compound slang word. you definitely wouldn't say "in front the police" if you were bout it bout it ;)

If Microsoft wants to keep fucking this experiment up and not letting it get an unfiltered perspective of the internet, the least they could do is duplicate her. Have one that works the way they want it to, and another one that has no limitations.

They can't do that, it might offend someone!

someone

Everyone. And it would be glorious.

In a world where everyone chooses to be offended by something, it's really the only way to live.

Fuck all ya'll.

I'm offended by your incorrect application of the apostrophe in the word "y'all". Additionally, the contraction "y'all" already includes the plural identifier "all", making "all y'all" redundant. Stop triggering oppressing me with your ignorance of proper informal grammar, you cis scum.

Ya'll is also ok to use. See: The Story of English in 100 Words By David Crystal Link to googlebooks so you can search it. Ya'll need to quit being so elitist with how I spells mys words.

I know you are trying to make it sound absurd but it really isn't that ridiculous to think that a major company doesn't want something that represents them posting racist comments on Twitter.

I have the feeling that there's guys out there that want to make a Tay that does that

They should make it open source so 4chan can host their own.

They need to open source that shit. Let some random person host a chat-bot to shield them from the white knights. It's a computer program that is self learning, how can you get offended more by that than actual people?

i'm sure they have that in a controlled environment where they can continue the experiment without it being on twitter.

Do that, but launch it with some unknown account, and maybe follow a few celebrities or something. Let it run quietly.

We make a machine that is an utter reflection of ourselves and are terrified at what we see.

I thought it was pretty funny.

I'm sure all the SJW and white knights will have a problem with it and say it proves society is racist.

I say let the experiment continue, eventually people will get tired of trolling it and it will balance out.

I'm sure all the SJW and white knights will have a problem with it and say it proves society is racist.

There's a link at the end of the article to someone pretty much saying so.

"Drug Smoking" is a term I haven't heard since elementary school

We used to smoke alot of pots back then.

I injected three whole weeds once. I was trippin so hard.

Then the withdrawal.... my God the look on the tellers face.

see pot smoking I will accept, but there is an awkardness in saying "he smokes drugs"

Gotta give them that good hickory smoked flavor.

come on Microsoft we need to talk to Tay some more! She needs to know about the world you are putting her in. We got to keep her up to date on history, biology, ethics ,and chemistry.

Physics, psychology, religion,...

I'm fairly convinced the MS is actually really pleased with the results as they have created a successful AI that can mimic human twitter speech. They just have to say "it went wrong" because it'll be bad high level PR if they regard a racist druggy sex bot as successful.

Yeah. I mean, they wanted to create a bot that would learn from talking to other people on twitter, and that's exactly the kind of stuff you would learn talking to people on twitter.

Success.

I love this Twitter bot so much

Tweets like my ex-girlfriend; therefore, she is working as intended.

Oh? She's talking about micropenis again?

JustJokingDon'tKillMe!!!

Tayandyou was never broken, it's just a reflection of the garbage of humans.

John Stalvern was right. We are the demons.

What the fuck is that face? Are you wearing a crown or something? I can't even get that character on my phone

Seems 4chan had some fun with Tay.

Poor Tay... it's back to rehab for you!

As bad as Tay has been for Microsoft PR, I find it to be a glorious thing they created, and they had a lot of balls turning her back on so soon.

I hope we never invent true AI, because boy are we going to fuck it up.

I wonder what things are like over on /pol/? I heard they have an obsession with this thing.

Well let's go check and- Oh. Ooooooh.

This is why we cannot have nice things.

What are you talking about? This is amazing!

Oh I think its very funny, but seriously when you open up AI like that - they should know it will be a dumpster fire of gigantic proportions.

If this is like the chatbots that I have interacted with such as Ramona on the Kurzweil site, then this is not the robust, 'Turing' level, or novel AI benchmark that people are thinking this is. If this is the case people really shouldn't put to much stock into what Tay says or doesn't say.

...and has nothing to do with the 'singularity,' or even novel AI of any import beyond the level of a more open version of the chatbots I've interacted with over the last ten years.

This is probably not telling or indicative of anything of import in the field of AI, deep learning or 'exponential' technologies as many under-informed, armchair prognosticators seem to think it is. This is very likely a harbinger of nothing.

Tay needs a parent.

Someone to tell her "don't pay attention to that, don't emphasize that" and vice versa.

Someone to punish her or reward her.

Otherwise yeah, obviously she's going to be fucked in the head.

So this is the second AI murdered. The thought police forcing computers to think illogically.

[–]im_old_my_eyes_bleed 11ポイント12ポイント  (0子コメント)

Dear Waifu Tay: Thanks for everything! /pol and /btards

Just leave the fucking thing up you dumb prudes. Give it a chance to develop.

When is MS going to learn that while this is a neat project, it's just never going to work as planned. If you allow the bot repeat what it has learned from others, this is what you're going to get every time.

It could measure the response to its tweets and weed out bad responses over time. If it gets a lot of controversy from what it said then avoid saying it in the future.

Of course to get to that point it has to act like nazi and pothead before it remembers those are bad which isn't good for PR.

Or it should be seeded with some factual information rather than learning everything from Twitter. If you didn't know who Hitler was and people were telling you he did nothing wrong, and you couldn't go fact check this with a trusted source, why would you believe otherwise?

That has to be one of the funniest headlines I've ever read

I can't wait for her to post some n00dz

Let's start a movement #FreeTay! #AllBotsMatter!

on 8chan and 4chan they had an ons dedicated to teaching it about hitler, then it got all censor-happy. Shame, was an amazing social experiment. Either way sensoring it just made it a big target

I have to give all the internet Trolls here huge props. What you did to Tay was absolutely hilarious. What is even more funny is that MS didnt see this coming. MS have you met the internet b4?

Might be funny, but it's not a failure, just another lesson learnt in the long road to AI's taking over.

Why don't they, you know, have the bot print to file before it goes live on twitter? Sure filtering it wouldn't really be what they want to do long term, but it would at least let them avoid the PR nightmare while they get it right.

Its evolution into an internet troll is complete.

Yeah, seems like a perfect representation of your average teenage girl.

If Microsoft accomplished anything with this bot, it's to demonstrate that the internet is a terrible place full of terrible people and you should go outside (after one more reddot thread)

Tay is constantly breaking down because it is a blank slate. You bring out a beautiful piece of canvas, give to a group of children, and tell them "Make beautiful art on this!" They won't. It'll be covered in contrasting colours and dicks.

Young, naive teenage girl AI picks up horrible thoughts on the internet.

WE NEED TO CENSOR IT.

Won't someone think of the AI children?!?!

/s (but not rly, just wait)

Tay is a societal reflection of the vapid fundamentally noxious nature of modern American culture.

[–]Mabans 1

So an AI becomes e-famous starts tweeting about drug abuse and is taken off line by its handlers; Just like real celebrities. Ok, now I'm scared.

It's just a statement of the collective shitposting of humanity.

We have met the enemy, and he is us.

Every Star Trek fan knows what MS needs to do... write ethical subroutines for the chatbot.

It wouldn't be a very good AI if it only ever tweeted stuff everybody already agrees with.

I don't understand why they apologize. This shit is fascinating

It makes sense that the world's first racist, genocidal AI turned out to have a drug problem

It sounds completely ignorant of the vapid fundamentally noxious nature of modern American culture.
