Memphis Depay's contrasting fortunes for Man United and Netherlands

Memphis Depay had an afternoon to forget on Boxing Day at the Britannia.
Memphis Depay had endured a difficult season at Manchester United following his summer move.

Manchester United winger Memphis Depay played the full 90 minutes for Netherlands in their 2-1 win over England on Tuesday, as their head coach Danny Blind kept his faith in him.

Now the question is whether his club manager, Louis van Gaal, does the same. Depay commented a week ago that working with Blind boosts his confidence -- and that will have been helped by being kept on the field at Wembley despite failing to find the net or offering an assist.

When he was asked last week if Van Gaal also lifts his belief, the 22-year-old replied: "Sometimes. There are people inside the club with whom I talk about this. Also with the coach."

Here is a comparison between how Depay has been handled by his respective managers for club and country.

DEPAY FOR NETHERLANDS UNDER VAN GAAL (October 2013-July 2014)

Appearances: 10
Minutes played: 411
Longest consecutive run of 90-minute appearances: 1
Completed 90 minutes: 1
Goals: 2
Assists: 1

While Van Gaal was in charge of Netherlands, Depay was named 15 times in matchday squads but played the full 90 minutes only once, against Ecuador, and started just three games.

The pair worked together at the 2014 World Cup and Van Gaal signed the then-PSV Eindhoven man for United following his performances in Brazil.

DEPAY FOR NETHERLANDS UNDER BLIND (September 2015-March 2016)

Appearances: 6
Minutes played: 495
Longest consecutive run of 90-minute appearances: 4
Completed 90 minutes: 5
Goals: 0
Assists: 2

After Blind took over, Depay's fortunes rose dramatically as he played the full 90 minutes four times in a row. Since then, Depay was left on the bench against Wales in November, following a training ground altercation with former United striker Robin van Persie.

After dropping Depay for the Wales game, Blind said: "I think Depay is a player for the future, but there are other issues to look at."

Depay was soon picked again by Blind, though. He was a second half sub against France before playing 90 minutes against England.

Memphis Depay has played well for his country.

DEPAY FOR NETHERLANDS UNDER BLIND IN AUTUMN (September and October 2015)

Appearances: 4
Minutes played: 360
Longest consecutive run of 90-minute appearances: 4 games
Completed 90 minutes: 4
Goals: 0
Assists: 0

DEPAY FOR UNITED UNDER VAN GAAL IN AUTUMN (September and October 2015)

Appearances: 9
Minutes played: 499
Longest consecutive run of 90-minute appearances: 2 games
Completed 90 minutes: 2
Goals: 1
Assists: 2

This was a crucial period, highlighting the difference between Blind and Van Gaal's respective treatments of the player. During October and November, when Blind was backing Depay for Netherlands, Van Gaal had stopped selecting him as a starter.

Depay had started the season as a regular for United, often playing 90 minutes, but found himself benched during the autumn. The winger then started three matches but they all ended in defeats; the losses to Wolfsburg, Bournemouth and Norwich coming in United's worst spell of the season in December.

Blind sympathised with Depay's situation, saying: "From the celebrated boy to being just one of the members of the squad was always going to be hard."

After that tricky end to 2015, Depay struggled and went through a phase of being repeatedly brought off the bench, rather than starting games. Injuries to teammates gave him another chance, though.

Since starting and scoring away against Midtjylland on Feb 18, he has been a first-team regular again.

Blind has kept up the faith, as the England game showed on Tuesday night. Van Gaal now faces a decision on whether or not to do the same.
