U.S. says it will not recognize South China Sea exclusion zone (reuters.com)

For people who haven't been paying attention, China is widely expected to declare exclusion zone in the near future in the South China Sea, like it has already done in a East China Sea, either in response to an unfavorable a ruling in the court case brought by the Philippines on its territory claims or for some other reason. Unlike the East China Sea, a move like that in the South China Sea would be far more dangerous, which is why the US is prewarning.

Haven't been paying attention but just curious... What are the implications of this if it were to happen?
Depends how far it goes. Potentially? Full scale war. If China puts an exclusion zone in place and the US does not recognize the zone that puts pressure on China to stop the US from breaching it. Who knows where that goes, and neither side has a lot of room to back down. That's why the US is marking out the territory beforehand. It doesn't want to be in that sort of escalation. The only way China can stop the US from operating in the exclusion zone is through military force, and if that happens all bets are off. People talk about trade as if it is the arbiter of all events, but you can't put a price on nationalism and wounded pride.

A war between the US and China would be unimaginable horror.
Depends on the scale of the war and each countries objectives. If its a conventional war fought in the pacific ocean china is fucked, soo fucking fucked, but most civilians wouldn't see to much of a direct impact, and the minute china launched a ballistic missiles at the usa, convential or otherwise, they'd be turned to glowing ash. At that point yeah it'd be horrible, but its not like the usa is going to invade china in a conventional war, we'd just lobe bombs and missiles at them until they said uncle.

I hate the anti-American sentiment people seem to carry with them nowadays. The might of the United States military would absolutely crush China.
Worst case scenario Russia teams up with China because they do not want to deal with fallout but in the end 2 of the top 3 super powers will be dust, and it will not be America.
We are strong and people smash our politicans, but if our empire falls so does their power and they will not let that happen.

It's very unlikely Russia will join China at least for this cause. China going to full scale war for territories it claims isn't good news for Russia either.

No. All three will be dust.

Only with nukes.
The US doesn't have the power to project the force needed in a conventional war for such a large operation.
Places like Iraq and Libya are 3rd world countries with delusions of grander because they have half working 1970 fighter planes which is why it was so easy.
Heck during the first Gulf War, Iraqi Air Force didn't have functional RADAR and counter measure systems on the fighters the US shot down.
The RAND group did a pretty damning report on that fact, and how US "air superiority" was effectively a myth fighting such a destitute force.

You really think the US cannot have a modern and conventional war on a large scale?
There is so much political and military infighting in the US today, that the kind of mobilization required for a World War would be nearly impossible.
The rift of Americans who's support going to war, is equal to the numbers who would denounce it.
With an even larger amount of varying levels of in between, who'll see the South China Sea issue as a foreign problem, and not theirs.
The pattern has been growing since Vietnam, even the War on Terror failed to get a majority of the population committed to the war effort and having the US economy gear up for it. Big contractors made a killing, but that is about it. And that was with an attack on American soil.
Verses the millions of Chinese who today are educated, and view their position on the world stage due to their fall from power in the region as something they must correct. Something that they think is worth dying for.

Bush had a 90% approval rating and unanimous support from democrats and republicans in congress during the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq. What the fuck are you on about divided government? If there's one thing all Americans agree on it's war. What they are divided on is occupation and nation building.
We are literally waging a war right now in Syria with bi-partisan support in congress and a massive public backing of the need to take down ISIS.

While it is a very deep issue, I just do not seeing China beating the US in combat. Our air force and navy would do so much damage so quickly.
Even rarer, I do not see China and the U.S. going to war at all.

if anything USA will do much better in a conventional war... they have something like 13 aircraft carriers which are basically small countries they can deploy from everywhere in the world.

the US couldnt even handle vietnam, how will they handle the chinese in their own turf? seems impossible
Seems impossible if you assume the technology in our military is the same.
So...what happened in Iraq and Afghanistan?
Can you clarify your question?
you had a WAY bigger advantage technology wise against vietnam than you do against china today.
