I hear that if you get to 5 folders they send you a free promotional loot box.

Ea season pass. For 59.99 you get 5 different folders.

Free with a $60 donation!!

But the donation carries a 7% convenience fee and an additional $4.99 fee if you use a card, still free though since you're donating

What about microtransactions ?

Can I interest you in a readme.txt for just $2.99? you can use it in any of the folders

When you open it, it just says, "1 of 12."

For each 2.99 you get a random readme.txt file from our our collectable text files line. Collect all 12 today!

Hey guys, I know we told you at release you could use the .txt in ANY folder. But due to time dialation's effect on the velocity of a goat, you can only use the readme.txt in a single folder and must purchase an additional readme.txt for each folder beyond the first. Also, we own the folders you choose to add 'readme's to though you may use them under our license.

I heard there will be a readme bundle that will include readme.txt, readme2.txt for $4.99 with a config.ini for free (after paying the download fee of $0.99).

It's EA. I think you mean "they make you pay for a DLC loot box"

Make you pay for DLC that still doesn't "complete" the game.

And yet game companies act hurt when people pirate their half finished shit.

Remember when SimCity was online only and then the pirates made an offline version that also allowed you to build outside the set zone? Everything I read said the pirated version was better than the legit copy.

But then again, I just waited for Cities: Skylines instead.

That was a nightmare. Always online DRM on a sim city game was a real slap in the face. The game was made worse for seemingly no reason other than they planned to gouge us with DLCs that add features that should have been in the main game to start. EA destroyed Maxis, what a shame. :(

but on a high note - Cities: Skylines is an amazing game and is what SimCity should have been.

And for those who haven't played it yet, it's $12 through Amazon right now. (You get a keycode that you redeem on Steam.)

http://www.amazon.com/Cities-Skylines-Online-Game-Code/dp/B00T8F5VKW

Free?? No no no you clearly don't know EA. They send you the box, but the only way to open it is to swipe your credit card in the scanner on top. It is $19.99 for the initial cost plus an additional 99 cents for every 5 mins you are enjoying the contents of the crate which include a poorly kept poster for a terrible game that didn't even get released because EA pulled their funding, an EA keychain and a bunch of game codes to try to get at least one person to try one of their non-selling games.

If you try to bypass the payment and force it open it explodes killing anyone near it. And if you pay 5.99 extra the explosion will be even bigger.

Shouldn't EA Sports be in a parent folder: 'The Game'?

I have to give you that one. I would be OK with this horrible situation if this happens.

They did issue new covers for those that asked for it. That is a hell of an oversight, though.

I want to believe that over a dozen people looked at this for final approval and all let it slide through.

Wait... what??

I'm guessing from context that in the game "Dead Space", Electronic Arts made a spelling mistake which made a folder called "Electrontic Arts"

Totally did. And then patched it but couldn't retroactively delete the misspelled folder so anyone who had the game installed prepatch and post patch would end up with 2 EA folders even if it's the only EA game they ever played :p

anyone who had the game installed prepatch and post patch would end up with 2 EA folders

You mean a limited edition folder.

[–]eSsEnCe_Of_EcLiPsE 4ポイント5ポイント  (0子コメント)

Part will be free writing, part will be multiple folder.

Edit: a word. Stupid infectious EA spelling.

You should have seen Battlefield 2. I know it's made by Dice and not by EA, but there were plenty of spelling mistakes in the games files. For example, the themes that would play when your team lost the round were named as "x_loose" (where x is replaced with the team name like US or CH). However, when they added new teams in the expansions they spelled it as "lose".

Devs usually arent paid for their spelling abilities. I can imagine the actual source.

I work with rtards who spelled SUCCESS: SECCUSS. In 50+ locations. I refactored the shit out of that code.

Had to read it 5 times to find the spelling mistake even after it being pointed out, im becoming dyslectic.

I've read it 15 times and I still don't see it. Edit: After about 30 times, now I see it.

Electronic Arts is spelled Electron T ic Arts

Thanks, yeah I finally got it. Funny how your brain just skips over stuff like that.

It's how you read faster, your brain assumes what words are to compensate for your slow meat-sensors. tldr: You think faster than your eyes

tldr at the end of a sentantance kindof goes against the whole point of circumventing the slow meat-sensors.

Heh - yeah, I was interested in knowing if it was a folder or during the in-game credits roll somewhere. Of all the times I've played DS, I've never noticed it :P

It's such a funny mistake that I can see being so easy to overlook.

Dead space is that game I've always wanted to play but am too much a pansy to play. I used to invite my buddy over to play Fear years ago and make him play so I could watch. I'm not proud of this but I figured I had an anonymous opportunity to finally share this and move on with my life.

Try Dying Light. Lights off, headphones on, alone. Tense game during the day cycle, but a blast. Nighttime... is something different.

Just looked it up and watched a video... I would literally find a safe hideout and never leave it and never finish the game. haha. I couldn't even finish bioshock.

Because "EA" doesn't make games. Studios that didn't get clear instructions about how to name the EA folder do.

Also the issue that all studios on the planet think "My Documents" is a dumping ground for extraneous game files that, for some reason, they insist on not putting in the game's folder.

Those files are user specific and shouldn't be put in the game folder.

Agree that it's stupid to put them in "My Documents" but since Windows doesn't have a standardized "my game data" folder, the alternative would be even more messy.

It does though. There's specifically one named "My Games". Also appdata.

That's not a standard Windows one. The Windows one is "Saved Games", but was only introduced in Vista.

That was almost ten years ago, you'd think they'd catch on eventually.

You're giving them a lot of credit, if my VirtualStore folder is anything to go by a lot of game developers still think C:\Program Files\ is where save games should go.

I don't remember what game it was, but I once had an indie game install itself directly to my desktop. What a mess.

Ouch. :( The latest one that's making my grumpy is Dead or Alive 5 Last Round, which has created D:\Documents\Documents\KoeiTecmo for saves (icky, but tolerable - I keep my documents on a second hard drive) and C:\Users\Ben\Documents\KoeiTecmo for settings which means I now have two "Documents" folders when I click on my name, the real one on D:\ and the one C:\ that's just for my DOA5LR settings.

I went over a friend's house in high school and took a look at his computer screen. He or his brother had renamed every single file and folder on the desktop to "Porn" or something related.

"Porn Bin"

"My Porn Computer"

Etc. When I asked him about it, he shrugged like it was just Tuesday.

Beats AMD drivers always unpacking themselves into c:\AMD\

whats wrong with the c:\windows\temp\ folder?

Gotta rub it in your face every time you open the c drive.

Vista came out nearly 10 years ago, it's not exactly new.

[–]Gjack 3

+1 for %appdata% I don't need to see that shit in My Documents. Appdata folder is linked to my user.

Agree that it's stupid to put them in "My Documents" but since Windows doesn't have a standardized "my game data" folder, the alternative would be even more messy.

Windows absolutely has standardized recommendations for what folders to use. Many developers ignore them.

Within "My Documents", many games put their files into a "My Games" folder though, like My Documents/My Games/Skyrim. That gives them both a place in My Documents and keeps the folder ordered.

Well, it would if devs used it. I can't even use the My Documents folder on my computer anymore.

Microsoft has like 50 standard and quasi-standard folder to store stuff. Look at that:

https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc749104(v=ws.10).aspx

For games there could be:

CSIDL_COMMONPROGRAMFILES
CSIDL_COMMON_APPDATA
CSIDL_APPDATA
CSIDL_LOCAL_APPDATA
CSIDL_HOMEPATH

and there's also the 'My Games' folder.

appdata folder seems like the likely candidate.

The problem is appdata is hidden by default. Someone that knows their way around Windows, or has done extensive fucking around with applications on their computer would know where to find those files, but the average Windows user probably doesn't.

It's nothing a Google search wouldn't fix, but it's still about 3 or 4 searches to get to what you're looking for if you don't know where you're supposed to be looking. If Microsoft would encourage them to standardize where they dump user specific files, and put them in an intuitive place, I think it'd make things a bit easier for users.

Well it's exactly the reason why it's the right folder for it. So that the average user doesn't fuck with it.

Windows has had a standardised saved game folder since Vista (unsurprisingly named "Saved Games"), and it can be looked up with FOLDERID_SavedGames.

This is especially irritating on a mac, where 'Documents' is basically the root folder for all of the files that you might want to access directly.

Ps. Your username sounds like a gay final fantasy porn

Well... EA owns a lot of studios.

It's actually because there are no standards on PC (this is industry-wide, not just EA) as opposed to console (you get fined if you don't follow standards on console).

When I worked in the industry, I was told people usually structure their folders however the fuck they want on PC due to lack of standards.

Also, each folder represents a different developer. EA Sports is Florida for sure. One of those "EA" folders is the developer EA LA or EA Black Box because they always abbreviate their own name in-house. Spelled out "Electronic Arts" could be Maxis or Bioware.

This is the correct answer IMO. I work on big software dev projects and it could be anything from different studios, different dev teams, 1 fucking guy that quit and gets replaced and new guy wants to do it better. No documentation for naming convention standards for deployment packages.

The only reasonable response in this thread.

It's not completely reasonable though. It's still partly EA's fault for not standardising it among the developers working under their company. They deserve whatever flak their brand receives exactly for this reason.

The result isn't reasonable, but the suggested explanation is pretty reasonable.

Yeah and how hard is it to standardize that?

"To: All EA Studio Heads

The main game folder should be named 'Electronic Arts'. If yours is named something else please change it before release.

Thank you,

my_name_is_cooler"

They also have a technical requirements team who's job it is to make sure devs actually follow those kinds of rules. They don't run a very tight ship over at EA apparently.

This is true, but EA publishing does certification on all titles whether first-party or third-party. (They tend to be more annoying than Sony and MS cert, actually.) If they wanted to give clear instructions, it'd be easy. I suspect there's a confluence of factors going on here - code inertia ("we've got that directory tree hard-coded in a bunch of places and it's too late to change it!"), general disdain for PC SKUs, and just fundamentally it's not very visible to most users.

Honestly, this happens all the time. It is likely due to the fact that more than one department at EA developed software and they never had a standard process for their folder structure or, if they did, it wasn't followed very well. It's like the "left hand not talking with the right hand" kind of scenario. Many departments are ran rather autonomously from other departments.

Makes you wonder if they need to apply standards in the actual code and structure of the game.

Maybe. You see a lot of this kind of stuff being a consequence of acquisitions, for example, where some practices were never abandoned when the company was bought.

In all honesty, folder structure between independent software products is incredibly low on the priority list, or at least should be, so resources will likely never be diverted to fix it.

Exactly. This is the real world. Things get dirty, especially if they've been around a while. I sometimes find it annoying when people pass judgement on systems, organizations, or processes which have grown organically.

You can't design for the future when you don't know what it will be. We all make decisions today with limited information and it's not fair to judge those decisions with added information of hindsight.

This is why I dont use the My Documents folder for any of my actual documents. It has been pouted by every jackass that thinks their software dll's are more important than my content. I have a single folder with all my photos and documents I have manually saved into it and I just ignore the My Documents folder.

I use to keep every folder and drive very well organized but I have found it has gotten too hard and bothersome with every program spread across 30 folders. I have just started using the default install directory and just reformat and reinstall about once a year.

Why can't everyone just use the "My Games" folder?

This is really the reason why my work computer and my games are on different boot drives.

Extremely Annoying

TL;DR: EA

Hi! I work for EA, specifically on the Sims 4 franchise. Allow me to explain.

EA is huge. Much larger than people think. We have studios all over the world. Each studio could have any number of different teams making various games. For instance, at "EAHQ" in Redwood Shores, California, we make The Sims. We have some Popcap people here. Visceral is here. A bunch of 2D/mobile titles are developed here. EA Tiburon in Florida makes Tiger Woods, NCAA and Madden Football, that one time we tried a basketball game, that was at EA Tiburon. EA Vancouver makes the Hockey game and FIFA and who knows what other games. EA Shanghai makes...something. I have no idea what they make, they're in Shanghai.

Anyway, between all these studios and all these teams, it's hard to keep things in line. Even simple things like, "hey guys, what folder should we throw all our game data in?" are complicated to agree upon because, well, so many studios with so many teams.

But hey, at least all the folders start with E! At least we got something in common! :D

It just seems like something like this shouldn't be that difficult. Someone at some level should be able to be like, 'ok, everyone put it into a folder called "EA"' or something.
