Nike t shirt, sooo hipster

Yeah, I'm not sure what hipster is anymore. So now my gym clothing, sweats and a nike logo on a T makes one a hipster.

It's a completely moving target. It means "anyone putting effort in to their appearance that doesn't fall in to a classic mainstream clique."

Well I guess all that individualistic effort spent on tucking in a button up shirt into jeans definitely opposes mainstream dress.

I think "Being different for the sake of being different" is a better summary. It filters out anyone putting effort into their appearance with a specific goal in mind, like cowboys or engineers or astronauts or whores. Wearing leather chaps because they help you do your job shouldn't make you a hipster (cowboys and... adult film stars). Wearing leather chaps solely because nobody else is wearing leather chaps makes you a hipster.

BRB, assembling my "leather chap astronaut" outfit.

I'm a 42 year old dweeb. My wardrobe has come in and completely out of hipster fashion twice, now.

I hate when it's in... It draws attention to myself and people assume I'm going for an in look. Kind of makes me a tad self conscious.

In my experience, most Americans here tend to call anyone dressing in modern clothes a hipster.

Also jeans, shorts, short dresses, and plaid shirts. And sweaters. And zip ups and hoodies. Don't even get me started on sunglasses.

So now there is nothing left in my wardrobe that I can wear without being called hipster.

That's when I said fuck it and not care what haters say.

It's not anything anymore. When hipster first emerged, it referred to a specific group of young people in Williamsburg who emphasized irony and, to paraphrase John Hodgman, those who considered the details of their media consumption to be the primary representation of their identity.

It's evolved to become a catch all for any kind of considerate consumerism. It's had terrible side effects, such as a proliferation of organic food options, numerous small businesses that emphasize craft, sourcing, and quality over profits, and a heap of new artists with substantial support because there was cultural and social currency in freely advertising for them on social media.

Are hipsters responsible for any of those things? Of course not. Did they help in the rapid proliferation of those attitudes into the mainstream such that one could simultaneously be hip and traditionally successful? You bet.

It's like when I tried to learn Spanish and my genitals exploded.

Nike is only hipster in places where Nike DOESN'T have a massive corporate influence.

Because there are a ton of people who wear Nike around here in Portland who do so because they're employees.

People use the word "Hipster" way too liberally.

That sounds like something a hipster would say.

And we have come full circle

[–]PM_ME_UR_ASSES_GIRLS 78ポイント79ポイント  (6子コメント)

It seems like the definition of hipster is getting so broad that I feel like if I'm not wearing a white t-shirt and blue jeans, I'm considered a hipster.

White shirt and blue jeans? That's such a hipster outfit.

Totally disagree. A white t-shirt and jeans is sooooooo hipster.

Hahahaha then you just look like you're trying to be James Dean. Hipster as Hell.

But yes, the term is broad to the point of meaning nothing. People continue to call Converse hipster shoes on like, year 5 that Target has had their own Converse line.

And Converse has been owned by Nike for almost a decade now.

Not to mention that Chucks are awesome if you want a non streaking sole that is ESD safe.

Wonder why every electronics or compsci nerd for the last 50 years has worn them?

I think its the facial hair hes talking about

These are way cool but none are actually "Ancient Greek Statues". These statues are from the Louvre and date from the Renaissance to the 19th century.

*Not really Ancient Greek Statues and not really hipster clothes.

Not really dressed up either. I'm about 50% sure they were photoshopped.

"The people doing the things to the rock people with the magic electricity boxes". Is that better?

Seriously if they were actually ancient Greek, 80% of them would be bronze.

With clothes being worn, I find the statues much more Relatable. The beauty of the sculptures are diminished but the people the statue have been modeled after become more human.

That pretty much sums up my feelings while looking through these as well. It would be an interesting project to revamp art from various periods using modern clothing to see how people's feelings changed towards the scenes that were depicted. Too bad I'm bad at photoshop and took humanities years ago.

Maybe hipsters dress differently where I am. I would say this is spot on "statues modeling for J Crew" though.

Edit: for clarity

Jcrew has always been a yuppie brand. I don't get how Jcrew is hipster.

It's not, that's what I meant. It's not how hipsters dress where I am, which is as if they fell onto a thrift store clothing rack and kept walking. Nothing wrong with second hand clothes, I wear them all the time. Just not all at once.

However if the title said "statues modeling for JCrew" I would agree fully.

Sorry, misread your comment. I see your meaning now.

I probably worded it badly haha

*fixed it thanks :)

spent way too long trying to figure out how they go the clothes on the statues

Did you work it out?

[–]Agonze 1

I think so

WELL?!?! Don't just leave the rest of us hanging!

[–]Agonze 1

look. you'll know when I know.

Scissors and velcro.

[–]Agonze [

none of that shit was invented when these statues were made

Makes me annoyed that sculptures from thousands of years ago can pull off modern clothes better than me

Yea, they're rockin' it

When did regular clothing turn into hipster clothing?

If this is "hipster clothing" OP, you need to take off your oversized batman Tee and your fedora, and go buy some new clothes.

Disregarding the use of the word hipster, this actually makes these works of art way more relatable to me.

It is a sad age.

When dresses are hipster.

Dresses are so underrated and for some reason neglected as casual wear and only worn for special occasions....

I know lots of women who wear them.

I think the hipster anti jerk has become worse then actual hipsterism.

I love dresses as casual wear. There is nothing more comfortable than not wearing pants.

They did it before it was cool

They did it before it WASN'T cool anymore. FTFY

That's just clothing!

I don't know why it hasn't hit me until I have seen them in modern clothing but, these statues are hot. 10/10 would bang.

One of them is wearing pants as a shirt...

Why not just say "Modern Clothes"? It's far harder to argue that then have every comment be complaining about the use of hipster?

Number 1 looks like an Irish girl I knew in college. She would drag her bedclothes around, instead of using a clothes basket, while doing laundry.

Ah photoshop.

Most of those sculptures would have been painted originally, so not such a stretch.

Such a great idea!

Can someone tell me what the scroll-type thing a lot of the statues are holding represents?

Marble does not support it's own weight well, and breaks easily. So from ancient times there will be props to allow the artist to provide support.

In at least one case though the statue is based on a bronze original (and bronze could support it's weight). The bronze had a sword:

I see a Bryan Cranston

[–]Pride_Is_Expensive 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

So, this would actually make a really kickass clothing catalogue.

[–]Smoky_colombian [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

where to find pants in the third picture?

[–]Reddit_isAstr0turfed [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

ITT: Redditors very upset about the use of the word hipster.

No one could have seen this coming, reddit and hipsters have no association.

TIL hipsters dress like almost literally every normal person under 40.

Ancient Greek sculptures dressed up in hipster clothing.

Yes. They're Photoshopped.

Couldn't even get the pants on in the first image.

Mystified that I find myself having to post this for some people.

If I was Greek I'd take offense to someone hipstering my culture

These are Renaissance sculptures and onward you dungle. One of them has pope Benedict's name on it if the fact that they are perfectly preserved didn't give it away.

Also hipster or not they look p fly.

Those statues suddenly look very douchey. Amazing the power of clothing to make you look totally lame.
