Every ruler has a choice - do something that people won't like but that is better in a long term for the whole country or to please people sacrificing the future of realm. By allowing this twitch thing spread mods make this place good for many people but this is no longer a place where you can have an actual discussion about the game

Simple: Just make a "shitpost Sunday". Shitposts get banned every other day.

People who post on Shitpost Sunday should get a unremovable flair calling them pedo cunts.

Would sort out our problem really quick.

[–]lemankimask [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

the users of this sub have showed time and time again that they can't be trusted to moderate themselves by using upvotes/downvotes

this sub would improve so much if the mods took some lessons from for example TL forums or /r/games

To me, /r/dota is a comedy site filled with player-drama, memes and the occational community-discussion.

Actual strategy and tips is pretty much the domain of /r/TrueDoTA2 ota, and I don't think there's anything wrong with this; different content for different occasions.

[–]RESPECT THE TRADITIONSNadril 192ポイント193ポイント  (21子コメント)

Thanks for letting us know.

I'm probably considered 'old' by this subreddit's standards (only 27, but meh) and the last thing I really want to read on r/dota2 is some weird pseudo psychology bullshit of some guy trying to sound smart. It's pretty obvious what tilting is and why it happens -- it certainly doesn't take ~20 paragraphs of text to explain it.

Much like r/bestof sometimes, you seem to equate the amount of text in a post with the quality of a post. Anyone can ramble forever on a topic no one actually cares about.

Truthfully, I don't come here for the serious discussion and I don't want to.

edit: Also why do I feel like everyone in this thread calling themselves an 'old man' (Aside from Nahaz, kappa) is like 20.

[–]ranpo[🍰] [スコア非表示]  (4子コメント)

Not to mention that there is the exact same thread about not tilting every single week with the exact same points and replies. This pretty much applies to every single "serious" thread.

[–]Bleed BlueChemfreak [スコア非表示]  (3子コメント)

And Memes never die and are always fresh. Kreygasm.

[–]corona1911 [スコア非表示]  (2子コメント)

The meme game is so weak. They all mean the same thing. You can just put kappa kreygasm 4head at the end of anything you type and it's a "meme"

It's worse than instagrams "meme" community.

[–]Bleed BlueChemfreak [スコア非表示]  (1子コメント)

That's my point exactly. He tries to argue that all serious posts are the same while defending the memes. He's just a low effort troll. 4Head Kappa.

[–]adams215 [スコア非表示]  (1子コメント)

I agree. I feel like no matter what turn the subreddit takes people will always complain. This community has made it clear that no matter what the atmosphere is it will not be good enough. If it's too clowny there are threads compaining about how immature everything is and how twitch meme's are the worst thing since satan. If it's too serious then there will be threads complaining about the sub not being fun. I guarantee if mods started banning threads because they centered around twitch memes the amount of nazi mod threads and comments would be immeasurable. So, the way I see things is that people need to find out what they want out of this sub and decide if they like it or not and not be influenced by outside peer pressure. Personally, I like this sub the way it is. There plenty of clowny stuff to laugh at and if I want to find threads on gameplay, bug reporting, strats, etc. it is not as hard to find as the OP is making it out to be. It probably doesn't help that the OP's case of a "good thread" is pretty ridiculous (in my opinion of course).

[–]They don't sleep anymore on the beach...ReadBeforePosting [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

Here's the thing with forums. They start out small and only a selected group of people post on it, the discussion is usually serious cause these are people that care about the topic, so those people enjoy it a lot.

Then the community grows bigger and instead of 100 people who frequently post, there are 10k people posting. So, of course it changes. You can see a lot of different topics that cater to different audiences. There are memes and there are serious topics as well. If you ask me, although the mods get a lot of flak, they do a very fine job of keeping it balanced. You don't want to see the fluff posts? You don't have to. But some people want to.

You can't force someone to like the same thing as you do. As to why some people like fluff posts instead of serious discussion, this is a matter of taste. Maybe you don't agree with it, but that doesn't mean people should just stop liking what they like.

[–]All You Need Is BurNIngxnxsvngl [スコア非表示]  (1子コメント)

why do I feel like everyone in this thread calling themselves an 'old man' (Aside from Nahaz, kappa) is like 20.

Cause 20+ is considered old in DotA2.

I remember during TI5 Wildcard round the casters were discussing Vega's lineup and talking about their age. Someone said "oh Mag and Solo are old players who have a good chance of guiding their team with experience and getting through to the Mains this year" (Wildcard round, no one ever fathomed how far CDEC would go). Turns out Mag and Solo are just 25. And then they laughed about how 20s is considered old in DotA2.

[–]crrttt [スコア非表示]  (3子コメント)

I think people who are 20 and above, including myself, consider themselves older because most of the people who frequently browse and spam twitch chat in this subreddit, are younger than 20. Maybe even younger than 16, I don't really know, but there definitely seems to be an overall lack of maturity with many of the posters.

I don't think anyone is begging for super serious discussion constantly, nor are we asking for there to never be a single fucking joke posted, BUT when all people are commenting to serious stuff is EleGiggle and fucking BibleThump it makes me want to smash a nail through my dick.

Granted there is a time and place for everything, but this subreddit is going to start losing a lot of subscribers if it doesn't get roped in a little more tightly. I mean shit, we all remember what the front page of the subreddit looked like pre-6.86. It was a complete shit show

[–]LogicKennedy [スコア非表示]  (1子コメント)

I dunno if the 'average' person is really not very smart, I'm pretty sure most people who are able to get on this forum and communicate are of above average intelligence in their age/nationality brackets, it's more the fact that it is much easier for a large number of people to connect over the lowest common denominator, since that is what is most broadly appealing. This is also how mainstream politics works.

And anything that threatens to break or quell that persona is a "nazi" or a "cuck" or whatever is listed in the latest issue of internet-insult-of-the-month.

All these kids just want to get laughs and cause memes. That's what the majority of upvoted threads in Reddit post are (and the bulk of Twitch chatters aren't so different). Just shitty puns, reused jokes, references and memes for miles and miles.

So, they can just run their mouths as horribly as they want and their like-minded anonymous commenters will praise them and out-number anyone dissenting because there's zero meaningful recourse to being an anonymous idiot on the internet. It will not stop.

This will probably get downvoted but at least you'll see, OP. I agree fully. This subreddit sucks. In the past it was just the most toxic community I've ever seen. Now it's the most toxic community I've ever seen and there's almost no worthwhile content.

I check it out once in a while for tournament coverage and informational threads, but the comment sections are 90% garbage. If only the mods would create a "shitpost" filter, then you might be able to browse here without constantly feeling like you're surrounded by pubescent teenagers.

Yea like 90% of the subreddit are 12 year old memeing cunts that would upvote any post related to drama / memes or arteezy

[–]frostivusiscancelled [スコア非表示]  (4子コメント)

Not everyone you don't like is a twelve year old. This is what you say when you think you're the only rational person in the room.

Personally, over the years, I've slowly taken video games less seriously, and I don't think it's a bad thing. There are weekly threads for questions and discussions, but to be honest, when I engage in a serious topic in here, it usually devolves into name-calling and a shouting match between who can reduce complex situations to black and white reactions the fastest. This is not grown within this specific community; it is site-wide, and largely an extension of anonymous and immediate expression online.

Popular ideas are often simple, controversial/provacative and at the same time generally agreed upon. That's exactly what this post is: reductionary anger complimented by comments that blankly agree--and memes.

For me, serious discussion is difficult in almost any popular forum, and at a certain point I realized what role video games play in my life: I have bigger things to worry about, even if this takes up a decent chunk of my time. I'd rather have it be casual enjoyment with humor and lightheartedness, with engagement where I seek it out. I'm more dismayed by drama-seeking than I am by memes. Serious discussion doesn't equate to intellgient engagement when it's just reactionary anger, and that's what I often find here.

If we want to show dismay at the lack of calm and reasoned discourse with sensible and slow growth between parties that leads to a relative equal bridging of understanding between both sides...that's not a Dota thing. It's a human thing, and yes, it's frustrating.

*Edited to fix typos on my phone. Sorry for any mistakes

Its like how people say that 4chan used to be good. I knew someone who frequented it back in 2004 (we were 12-13 I believe). He was the weird guy in the class and was a huge fan of encyclopedia drammatica, would spend hours each day reading it and adding to it.

An image board website dedicated to anti social weeaboos wouldnt ever be good. People who say it was good is looking through nostalgia glasses, its going to be frequented by the weird fucks.

Same applies here. I do remember the hero release hype. Triple hero releases... Oh my... Mmmmm

This subreddit was always doomed to death by numbers (all larger subs are), not because there are more people, but because the shit is just that much more pronounced, its always there, you just didnt notice it as much because it came in a trickle rather than a river. It wasnt Twitch emotes, that is an easy target, but shit posts have been here as long as I remember (3+ years, 75k+ comment karma)

The state of /b used to be weed threads and porn/give pics of people. Now it's just porn.

[–]AUI Biblethumpsilian [スコア非表示]  (1子コメント)

There was quite a few years where there was a lot of CP on /b/, I still avoid that board like the plague for a reason. Some of the more niche boards are decent though. /tg/ is usually good if you filter out the quests and CYOA stuff for example, fun stories, introduces you to new games and how to play them, homebrew settings you can steal for your own use, etc.

[–]Rock your worldThataSmilez [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

Yeah, not all of them are cancer. The fact that there's so many different boards means that special interests not in the adult (aka everyone is just gonna post/ask for porn) boards have some genuine communities. /g nowadays saddens me. A board where the first post you'll see tells you to install gentoo shouldn't have so many technological dumbasses on it.

[–]FIRESimco_ [スコア非表示]  (4子コメント)

No it wasn't. There was a significant change in the posts here once Twitch became what it is. The proportion of content shifted from there being some dumb stuff to there being some good stuff.

It may be shit in your opinion, but you can't objectively say the sub-reddit has turned to shit. The nature of reddit is that the most popular threads go to the top,so the threads you're complaining about are what the majority wish to see,and you can't complain with that system.I personally get annoyed when I see 5 different posts about arteezy on the frontpage, but I accept that he has lots of fans and overall he's a popular figure for the community. So I don't complain about it,and neither should anyone really especially without stating better solutions to the problem than the 0 you have offered.

The mods saw this coming, and a while back the subreddit as a whole made the decision not to limit content to genuine discussion about the game, instead going down the route (I believe /u/ReaverXai made this a direct comparison) of the LoL subreddit's meme-dominated culture. We're currently facing the consequences of that decision. Perhaps it's time for the mods to bring up the question again, and have the community reevaluate what it wants this subreddit be about? Paging /u/ReaverXai b/c I think he's the one that made that post back then.

The system of subreddits and voting makes every sub a hugbox. Democracy is the most retarded thing to base a website on because it means 2 drooling potatoes' opinion has more weight than 1 educated opinion, which means the frontpage content will be the bottom of the barrel twitch humor.

Honestly I'm surprised that this thread got there. Maybe people agree with this but didn't want to bring it up on their own, because I've seen any criticism of twitch "kapparino pasterino xdd" jokes met with hostility, usually with logical cogent points like "you must be fun at parties KAPPA /s" and "SAVAGE F" right under that.

Reddit is enjoyable for content aggregation, but comments are just anal waste

This place is full of teenagers. Teenagers love dumb shit because that's what they are. Just look at replies to your post, they consist of edgy kids spamming their "memes" to make you angry or whatever. As long as they are majority this sub won't be good

You can't change people, but here's something that might help you: https://www.reddit.com/r/DotA2/comments/3on0ep/addon_for_removing_twitch_emotes_from_this/

It allows you to replace Twitch emotes with blank spaces or whatever you want.

Yeah, but there's no going back now. In reality, most people on reddit aren't truly interested in improving. Just having fun and being entertained. That's fine, everyone has their preferences, but just keep in mind that this is the case now.

Seriously though, you have a point but it's moot to try to argue/complain about it. This is what happens when a game becomes popular enough to have over 1mil players.

I don't know, it feels like there should be a DotA comedy sub reddit for 80% of the posts, a DotA art sub reddit for 15% of the posts, a shitpost sub for the 5% of unfunny comedy posts and then for the remaining % of high quality posts can stay.

    [–]QlimaxDota 2ポイント3ポイント  (0子コメント)

    I suggest truedota2 subreddit.

    [–]OPsuxdick 1ポイント2ポイント  (0子コメント)

Trust me on this. Remember when Myspace was popular? I do. When i look back, I realize how bad and dumb that crap was. This is the same thing as that. The age demo has to be the same as Myspace was and all this stuff being posted is cringey but you have to roll with it. What twitch needs to do is make channels for twitch chat that people can join and have it moderated by someone the user trusts. Then you can join that channel have it free of all the emotes.

I'm glad someone has finally come out with it. I hate this place now and only come on it once my game has patched to see the changes. The Twitch memes are just irritating and childish and I'm sure I'm younger than most on this sub. It's not helpful anymore, if someone comes for tips on how to get better at the game they're just told to get gud or downvoted. The DotA community is already full of twats and this sub doesn't help to remedy that.

I don't see it getting any better to be honest.

    [–]unthrowabl 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

I was certain people knew to ignore shitposts by now. Check the /r/dota2 right now, its really not as meme filled as you are whining about it being. Just filter out posts you know are bs.

    [–]Meme team supremeshitpostingshitstain [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

Serious discussion does not need to happen on this subreddit and will never happen because its useless. If you want to get better at this game there are guides and other subreddits to help you. Having serious discussion on this subreddit is useless because most people here already know loads of shit about dota with thousands of hours on the game. What else is there to learn?????

    [–]BLBOSS [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

Well just because a post has a lot of words in it doesn't mean it's any fucking good.

However I do agree with you otherwise. This place is fucking atrocious which on it's own wouldn't be too bad, but Valve actually reads it and takes suggestions from it. They'd honestly be better off looking at /d2g/ instead; at least /d2g/ actually talks about the game on a more regular basis than here.

    [–]LordofKleenex [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

I don't care about any of the pro player or tournament talk on this sub. I like to play Dota 2, but I really don't care about what this one pro player did or how one pro team is doing in this one tournament.

    [–]SmackTrick [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

Its sad, but its nothing new when it comes to subs that grow bigger and bigger and target a generally pretty young audience (gaming).

Unless the moderation crew decides they want to crackdown on the low effort image posts and baseless drama shitposts and memes in comments, its gonna happen because a large portion of the crowd finds them funny.

    [–]rg-one [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

u speak the truth OP, majority of reddit community is cancer. im only browsing reddit for news regarding patch etc. since it will be published here first

    [–]SoilBurn [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

Why don't you just ignore people spamming twitch memes? That's what I do. Just stop reading the post as soon as the 2nd biblethump/pogchamp thingie hits. But you can't expect people to stop following fads. Fashion victims will always be fashion victims. A couple of years ago it was grumpy cat quotes, now it is twitch memes. Whatever.

Yeah it was totally different before TI3. The game became popular, the sub became bigger so the whole sub changed.

Also it doesn't really help when the mods have a "hands off" mentality towards the sub. Yeah they are not nazi unlike other big gaming subs but instead we have the problem OP is talking about.

Thanks for coming out and saying this. I never thought an opinion like yours would reach it to the front page in this subreddit, but I'm glad it did.

A few of my friends started using Twitch memes in their real-life speech and it's infuriating.

    [–]Deity_Link [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

Seriously this subreddit is bad. I've removed from my default subscriptions, and only occasionally check it out.

I'm getting a smug from the knowledge that I wasn't the only one to have done it. Or to have become exasperated with twitch memes on this subreddit.

This really is the worst aspect of memes in general. memes are only fun for those who are in on them, and who relate to their origin.

    [–]Maybe when you're olderscamp41 [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

I agree with you 100% OP. Sadly this is the unfortunate truth with subs like this which are dedicated to a largely static medium. Over a long enough period of time, people just run out of meaningful things to talk about. So they start talking about meaningless things, and it just spirals down from there.

The only time I really check out this sub is when a new patch comes out. I only even saw this thread because there was an update when I loaded the game and I went looking for a thread with the changes.

    [–]SF Arcana plsshadedclan [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

Look dude, this sub may be a shithole but it's our shithole. Now if you don't like it here then don't visit. What you're doing right now is also those useless threads because it adds nothing to the subreddit. You're just complaining. It would've been better if you gave some suggestions or something. Again if you don't like it here just leave. The majority of this sub is now people who like twitch emotes, that isn't to say there is still some worthwhile discussions here and there but that's what you get when a sub gets big. I'd like to see you try taking a hand at modding this sub and see if you can even handle it

    [–]rzl876 [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

Twitch memes is the saddest entity the internet has ever produced. You don't even have to be "old" to recognize that. I don't understand the appeal at all. How people call this humor is beyond me, let alone calling it jokes. Makes me sad knowing that this is what we've come to as a society. Even worse is thinking where we're headed.

    [–]Maneww [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

Twitch chat is only interesting if you find yourself a streamer with less than 100 viewers. It's sad at the same time because you wish those people to have more of them (I'm thinking of Lizzard for exemple). Bulldog or singsing twitch chat is so cancerous, lately the "ONE MORE "LUL" IM OUT" gave me stage 8 cancer. As for reddit... well we know you get downvoted for saying the truth, that's not new. But thanks for the link "Tip for tilters", i will read it and upvote if it's good.

    [–]Who's ready for a cold one!vviki [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

Just install Word Replacer for Chrome, if you are using Crhome, pretty sure there is equivalent for other browsers. So now I don't see twitch memes, I see people declaring they are a person of different sexuality. You can tune it for whatever you want.

    [–]dream_walker09 [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

This sub /is/ actually really terrible. Barely any posts about Dota2 and its gameplay, it's all pro scene circlejerks and OMG LOOK WHAT "X" POSTED. Who cares? I don't follow pro scene at all; I come to this sub looking for content. And it's just memes and twitter feeds.

    [–]Carpathicus [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

Seriously I feel goddamn old reading stuff here. I know all these stupid twitch memes but I really dont care at all. Its all about making stupid jokes constantly. The only thing that doesnt read like shit smeared on walls by toddlers is item and hero discussion if you care enough to scroll down. I just stopped reading 1 sentence comments. I dont mind the silly shit once in a while but it was ridiculous with the Majors. I swear most of the threats were 100% memes and it was basically impossible to read about drafts, strategy etc. I mean if someone could post a place were I can enjoy proper discussion about the game I gladly take it and rely on this place for twitch memes. Its sad that /r/dota2 is so important Inside the community even though being a complete shithole.

[–]Let go your earthly tetherstitanium_nine [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

Man this place was actually a good place to go to for useful game knowledge and item/skill build discussions back during the ti1/ti2 era. It was a lot closer to the the TL forums or the TrueDota2 subreddit. When I think back I remember all the posts about what to do against jungle lycan, when to fight against a team with naga/ds/tide and why vanguard on am or bfury on bounty is bad.

Singsing was just a typical rager before his memelord status. EE got kicked from No Tidehunter, bringing together the unstoppable Alliance. Which brought Admiral Bulldog and his Sheever/donger memes into the spotlight around ti3. Then RTZ after his debut on Speed.int or Sigma whatever they were called at the time. And finally the diretide incident was a point of no return.
