While I do not share the anti-canine stand of a vast majority of Muslims in this country (as they can serve many purposes and are great companions), racism is not the answer here. Persuade people with logic not racial sentiments.

racism is not the answer here.

racism because of the word "melayu" or because it's a dog saying it??

[–]ShinyMetalBumBangsa Komputer Peribadi Gemilang 1

Because the dog's response is "Eee, Melayu" instead of "Eee, orang". The latter makes more comic sense and would have communicated the intended criticism of traditionalist / conservative Malays being too concerned with what the artist sees as petty or senseless things. The former communicates that, but applies it all Malays as well as implies that Malays who think like that should be held in contempt.

It's the difference between criticising someone for failing a test and calling the person stupid.

Therefore, that particular graffiti is (perhaps unintentionally) racist.

While I can see your point that it can look a bit racist, the joke doesn't work if you genericize it, because it's specifically skewering the Malay cultural aversion to dogs.

It's like demanding that a comic poking fun of Floridians for being crazy change "Floridian" to "people". Sure, it's less offensive to Floridians I guess but it becomes kind of a non-sequitor.

mmm i think you're pretty spot on..

The word melayu is kinda sensitive when used by a non malay similar to when malay using the word cina (even in totally normal context).

This reminds me of this one time. A tudung lady wants to visit friend in condo but the elevator only allows resident with rfid cards. So I see her and offer to help (she kinda hot too), and I ask her to call her friend for unit number. So she called and said on the phone "ape unit nombor? i kat elevator, ade cina nak tolong"

The moment I heard that, I was a little upset....... but then I thought, eh, why am i upset? I am cina mah? mmmm...

..

.

yup, the art should read "EEEE, SIBERIAN HUSKY!" "EEEE, MELAYU!"

Speaking of elevator racism, recently my wife held the elevator open for this old Chinese uncle and his wife. They got into the lift, this uncle just says to his wife in mandarin, that if it's a Chinese person in the lift, they would have not waited for him.

Yeah, something along that line. Ask anyone, if their car broke down in the middle of the road, the first to help is usually a non-chinese.

I'm guessing what we learned here is that Chinese people are so unhelpful, it begs surprise when they are.

If the piece had said "Eee, Cina", I would still deem it as racist. The problem is that it singles out a particular race in its response where it doesn't even need to.

If it just wanted to criticise the whole "Malays don't like / fear dogs" thing, all the dog needed to respond was "EEEE, ORANG" and it would still make complete sense.

yes I guess it could be implied as racist too considering the "chinese eats dog" stereotype.

The problem is that it singles out a particular race in its response where it doesn't even need to.

I thought that's the point, because a particular race singles out the canine, so the canine did the same? I mean it is a talking dog after all.

[–]ShinyMetalBumBangsa Komputer Peribadi Gemilang -2

Like I said, the dog in the piece doesn't need to single out the race of the person in order to get the piece's point across. The person is already depicted as being Malay, so it's already obvious what particular aspect of what culture is being criticised. This would be like saying "What you are doing is bad".

With the dog's response, it specifies disgust at the Malay for having a dislike / disgust of dogs. This would be like saying "You are bad" instead.

As you can see, just one word can change the entire meaning of the piece substantially.

so the malay women and the talking dog are are both disgusted with each other, which makes this racially offensive?

Everyone is being wayyy too sensitive. It's a comic strip. It's hilarious. It's only racist if you want it to be. One of the reasons I love being Malaysian is that a group of friends can go "woi cina" or "oi melayu" without any malicious intentions.

[–]ShinyMetalBumBangsa Komputer Peribadi Gemilang -3

What makes it racially offensive is the dog being disgusted because the person is a particular race.

ok, racist dog is racist. got it.

what if it's a cat? or what if it's not "EEE" but "EH"?

If the piece had said "Eee, Cina" this place will fucking blow up with guaranteed comments like this is why malaysia is still considered third country, 1st world country is so much better, i cant wait to get out of this country

[–]tnsaidrwas charged with sedition

No, not really.. I will still find it hilarious, because you know the stereotype that chinese eats dog and all that.

Yeah I know it's just a word and normally I would say "hey what's the big deal?" Unfortunately looking at the context, it seems to indicate this dog is disgusted by the person's race which could be construed as being racist. I'm not saying it is, I didn't even report OP or anything but we should try to stay away from posts like this. Malaysia is at a stage where I doubt it is ready for "satire" like this.

Also why is the dog disgusted by the person's race? The problem is not with the race, but with the interpretation of the religion. To me it would seem more accurate if it was directed at Muslims (not saying that it should be as not all Muslims believe the same thing).

the malay women is alarmed looking at the dog.

the dog is alarmed looking at the malay women.

See, it is that simple. Why you wanna infused emotions and anger by using words like "disgust" and "race"??

This is clearly 2 species here! both of them alarmed at each other. That's it! This is the message of this art piece, along the line of "No matter how horrible your roach phobia is, a cockroach will always be more afraid of you"

Why you wanna infused emotions and anger by using words like "disgust" and "race"??

Disgust because of the word "Eeeeeeeee" which in the Malaysian context of its use is used more for disgust and not alarm. Besides I've never heard anyone being alarmed and go "Eeeeeeeee!!".

Race because well apart from the language that's what Melayu is.

But you're right it could be construed in a different non racist manner as well. I didn't consider this and you may have a point here.

I don't have any issue with any dog owners as long as they train their dogs. I dislike very much when they bark for no reason when I walk pass the gate of their house and non stop Barking at night when people are trying to sleep.

My in laws have a different idea of them. They don't mind the neighbors dog as it would still bark at strangers for them, alerting them.

I too dislike loud noises when I'm sleeping or at other times during the day. Especially when it happens 5 times a day, every day, all over the country and can be heard even within the privacy of your own home.

I think today many submission have been to incite racial hatred. Can we just report these posts?

I already did but maybe moderator did not notice it.

Thanks to others who do.

Your report did go through but this post does not break any of the subreddit's rules. Rule 1 only applies in the case of personal attacks.

'Inciting racial hatred' is too open-ended to warrant the taking down of a post. The last thing we want is to end up censoring content on /r/malaysia. If people don't like the post, they can downvote it.

I love your way of thinking <3

what did we do to deserve such reasonable mods

[–]mawhonicHeadhunters unite!

Or how about if it offends you, don't open it, read it or comment on it? Our government censors enough of the world, can't we grow up and censor things for ourselves?

The photo that I submitted are not meant to "incite racial hatred" at all. All these replies about racial issues are not what I expected.

Keep in mind that this is STREET ART. Part of the elements that make street art interesting is the satire and subversive epigrams.

Now fuck off.

I find it hilarious dude. I too am not expecting such a critical analysis of the racial component of a fucking comic strip. People seems to be able to find problem where none exist.

[–]ShinyMetalBumBangsa Komputer Peribadi Gemilang -1

Even if you didn't mean to "incite racial hatred", that doesn't mean that what you submit definitely did not have that effect. What we intend and what actually happens sometimes don't match up. It's just how the world is.

Furthermore, so what if it's street art and supposed to be satirical or subversive? If - if - it has a racist tone to it in the first place, the fact that it's supposed to be subversive doesn't suddenly make it okay. In fact, I would argue that it makes it worse since it would be intentional.

ok, serious... no debate. You really find the pic offensive personally?

[–]ShinyMetalBumBangsa Komputer Peribadi Gemilang 1

Personally? No. But I can see how it has racist implications, whether those implications were intentional on the part of the artist or not. And if good street art is supposed to be subversive like OP claims, then that makes said implications even worse regardless of whether it was intended or not - at best, it means the artist is either too self-centered or short-sighted to realise them, and at worst it means that he isn't just casually racist but maliciously si.

There is no version of this where the artist comes off smelling like roses.

I did not mention that street art is supposed to be subversive. Being subversive is what I think one of the elements that makes street art interesting street art.

If a street art is not subversive as it's "supposed to", that does not mean I wouldn't call it street art.

Other than that you get my upvote.

[–]ShinyMetalBumBangsa Komputer Peribadi Gemilang 0

As I said, my impression is that you feel good street art is supposed to be subversive.

Unless you think being interesting isn't part of what makes a particular piece of street art good.
