Welcome to the sub-reddit - and congrats on making your first post. You'll probably get a decent # of downvotes for it (there are a lot of similar threads around here, and people get tired of reading them everyday) - but don't let that discourage you. The longer you're here, the more you'll get a feel for what people like to see posted.

That said - there are still plenty of us who appreciate a good substantive debate - so don't let the naysayers dissuade you if you have a logical thought to share.

Also - I probably shouldn't even be posting in response. /u/MullerReus (despite his username) hit the nail on the head with his post. Nothing more needs to be said here.

Wow, wow, wow now, what's wrong with my name!?

[–]BoyWhoCanDoAnythingMata 1ポイント2ポイント  (1子コメント)

I think it's a great name. Not sure the non Brits will get it though.

I'm not a brit :(

Anyway yeah it's good but it's easy to make up, I doubt I'm the first one to think of.

A united fan who dedicates his name to bayern and BVB players? Say it ain't so! (You better be German, at least!).

That said - great flair.

No, it's dedicated to yogurt! With a football spin on it!

I don't know that I believe you - but, that said, I am not the one angrily downvoting your posts for no apparent reason.

My name is literally that, just a play of words on Muller Rice, people take it far too seriously though, I don't even like Reus that much

[–]murica_sauceVidić 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

Aaahh. Well - I don't know that Muller Rice exists in the US, hence the confusion on my part. Here's an upvote for having a sense of humor, though.

We aren't broken, it's just the natural order of things, we lost the best manager of all time and now we have Van Gaal to sort shit out before he retires, we have a good young squad with a great future ahead of us and this needs to be the focal point, buying a fuck load of players to sort us out for 3/4 years won't work, we need a long time solution if we want to stay on top which Van Gaal is setting the foundations for right now.

buying a fuck load of players to sort us out for 3/4 years won't work,

This is exactly what SAF did time and time again.

Most of the SAF's players were around at the top for 3-4 years before he built a new sides. That is the normal and correct way to do things.

If we say that SAF essentially had 5 good squads once he got successful with us:

93-96, 96-99, 2000-05, 05-09, 10-13

Aside from Giggs, Scholes, Neville the vast majority of our players only really played for 1-2 of those squads as first team regulars.

Players constantly came and went under SAF in 3-5 year cycles, he was always rebuilding the squad to have about a 3-5 year peak before he'd move the older players on and sign/bring a new generation through.

Signing players to sort you out for 3-4 years is the right way to do things and the way SAF always did things.

we need a long time solution

You seem to have some weird misconception that squads if built right last for 5-10 years, I can't actually think of any example of that happening. Most players are around at the top for 5 years at the most.

if we want to stay on top which Van Gaal is setting the foundations for right now.

Since when is LVG trying to lay longer than 3-4 foundations?

The majority of his signings are veterans or guys in their mid 20s.

There's a difference though between what Fergie was doing and what Van Gaal is doing though, Fergie when he took over had a strong team, it was one of the favorites to win the league in 84/85, obviously though there were problems in it, but the team had quality in it to counter act the players coming in and out, Van Gaal took aver a very weak team, and he's building it now, but there is a difference between just signing players and building it, Van Gaal has made use of youth, by cutting the squad down youth is more likely to play, which can have a lot of benefits, yes it's risky but when it comes off it comes off well, we have hardly any players over 30, I can only think of Carrick, Schweinsteiger and Rooney and they are the leaders who are helping the younger members out, like Lingard, Memphis and Martial, add whoever else there, then we have the core of people in their mid twenties, and people like Blind could go on for ages after because he doesn't rely on pace, we are looking far stronger in the future than we did in 2012/1 that's for certain, and whoever takes over from Van Gaal has a hell of a lot easier job than Moyes ever did.

You've completely backed down from your position then and basically just rambled on about something completely different.

Are still claiming that buying players for a 3-4 year period of success is short termist and not what SAF did constantly then?

Are you still claiming that LVG is really building for a longer than 3-4 year period? From what? The 3 young players he's brought in?

There's a difference though between what Fergie was doing and what Van Gaal is doing though, Fergie when he took over had a strong team, it was one of the favorites to win the league in 84/85, obviously though there were problems in it, but the team had quality in it to counter act the players coming in and out,

We were 17th when SAF took over and we finished the season 13th.

Van Gaal took aver a very weak team, and he's building it now, but there is a difference between just signing players and building it, Van Gaal has made use of youth, by cutting the squad down youth is more likely to play, which can have a lot of benefits, yes it's risky but when it comes off it comes off well,

We were 7th when LVG took over and he didn't have to come in pre season.

Try again. LVG took over a very easily better side than SAF did.

I can only think of Carrick, Schweinsteiger and Rooney and they are the leaders who are helping the younger members out, like Lingard, Memphis and Martial, add whoever else there, then we have the core of people in their mid twenties, and people like Blind could go on for ages after because he doesn't rely on pace, we are looking far stronger in the future than we did in 2012/1 that's for certain, and whoever takes over from Van Gaal has a hell of a lot easier job than Moyes ever did.

And LVG inherited De Gea and Smalling. His two best players.

and people like Blind could go on for ages after because he doesn't rely on pace

He isn't good enough in the first place anyway, nevermind once he gets even worse physically. Neither is Lingard. Neither are anything more than Europa League players. The fact they start for us every week (as well as all the other mediocrities LVG has bought in) is why we're 6th and not competing for the league.

Memphis, Martial and Shaw are the three players who genuinely are long term 5-10 year first XI prospects, so 3 players. Hardly some super out of the ordinary long term planning.

The rest of the squad are all either already past it or extremely close (Rooney, Carrick, Valencia, Young, Schweinsteiger).

Or players in their prime years who fit the 3-5 year standard cycle than SAF/Mourinho or any other manager runs on (Herrera, Mata, Blind, Smalling, Darmian, Schneiderlin, Fellaini, Rojo, De Gea). Most of whom are average players brought in by LVG with minimal prospect of pushing on to top PL quality. If anything LVG has been very short termist himself in this area by signing a bunch of mediocrities in their prime to try which has left us a 4th-6th quality side because he's signed a bunch of 25 year old 4-6th place quality players. He's basically done what Liverpool have being doing for years now.

The various kids he's thrown in haven't shown enough yet to consider to discuss their long term prospects. They could all just as easily be a Luke Chadwick as they could a Ryan Giggs.

Correct me if I am wrong (have been following Utd only since 2000 and was not even born when Fergie took over) but if he had taken over a strong team, then why did 20 of the 24 players who started the 1986 season had left the club by the start of 1989-90 season? Doesn't it mean that he was not happy with the squad? And about the fact that Van Gaal is blooding youth...wasn't he forced to do so? I mean CBJ was played only because the defense was decimated with injuries early in the season...the same goes for Rashford...had not Martial got injured in the warmup, he wouldn't even have started the Europa League game..the only player he really gave a chance to was Jesse Lingard. Even McNair has almost disappeared once both Smalling and Blind have become fit (Fergie would have had given him a chance in the cup games)

[–]MullerReusIt's hard to believe it's not Scholes! 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

The team Fergie got had good players in it, they were a good team that was expected to win the league.

As for blooding of youth, I covered that in the trimming down of the squad, it lets youth have more of an impact and all the benefits and problems that brings.

Would you not consider all of the young players he's brought in a good foundation? Try forming a real response instead of being an ass

[–]joshbishop82 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

so, we're not a bad team. we just need to be molded the right way. most of the pieces are there already. Formation is important, first off I think we can all agree that we play more attractive football going 4-3-3. Obviously we cant play that formation every week, especially not against teams like Chelsea/Arsenal/City. But lets say...for the most part that 4-3-3 is the way to go. Front row we have Martial-Rooney-?, that ? is the big question, does that mean Mata, Lingard, Young, Memphis, Rashford. Of that bunch long term I think Rashford for the coming season I think Memphis fits that position. Rooney up top is controversial unless he gets his shooting boots back on. Zlatan if we get him might be perfect for it. In the middle, thinking long term I think Schneiderlin, Herrera and possibly a new box-to-box CM....someone like Pogba but he aint coming so with all the speculation of Renato Sanchez then maybe he's the man for the job. At the back....I think we're good apart from a quality CB to partner Smalling. Usual suspects at the back are Rojo, Shaw, Smalling and Darmian. Rojo can fill the CB role until we get a monster CB at which point Rojo becomes a sub. Blind for those wondering was my O'Shea-esce choice, he can fill the void of many positions but he's a sub in my eyes. All in all, three new signings (Zlatan on a free, Sanchez for 30m and Bonucci for 40m). 70m out. I dont think we should be off loading anyone at this point, a lot of quality, a lot of raw quality in youth. If we get Mourinho then Mata is gone and possibly young and Valencia with him. if that happens then maybe 40m in. Total loss of 30m. not bad business and enough left over for upgrading the main stand. Youth facilities have been widely reported as lacking, in comparison to City and maybe thats true and maybe not but given the results of the youth (U-21's the exception) I think we need to sort the youth structure out...its what the club are all about

Edit - Holy crap how did I forget the tree, yes...ship him out too. so, maybe 15-20m for him.

Hi there and welcome to the sub. Personally I think we need time more than anything. We have a good set of young players that need some time to gel together and to adapt to the league. however there are a few changes we could make to the squad to improve it.

We need a good CB to partner Smalling so I would opt for bonnucci, Laporte or Marquinhos. We need to update CM with a new CDM and box to box midfielder. I would offload Fellaini and Carrick and buy people like Gundogan and maybe just focus on blind being the new CDM. We also need a new Rw... Griezeman or Rues would be ideal but I don't see either happening
