VIALAMP began in a college dorm room late in the evening of October 13, 2015. A student puzzled over finding a new project for his master class. He had to write a Regulation D, an SEC document to receive venture capital, and it was due in a week. He had finished almost sixty pages of the document, working on a different product, and a different business model, but there was one problem... The product prototype didn't work. He lay awake pondering a solution, irritated by a small vial of glow powder that was keeping him awake in his otherwise dark room. He raised his hand and saw a shadow cast on the wall. Even almost ten feet away, a vial no bigger than his thumb created enough light to cast a shadow on a wall. The young man thought of an old friend, a pastor who had told him about the deaf ministry he lead in Ghana, Africa. He had said that the most powerful thing over there was the vast darkness when the sun set. The young man sat up, picked up the small vial lamp, and an idea was born.
Vialamp went through many prototypes. It started with that little vial, where it gets its name, Vial-lamp. It needed an internal lighting source. Even though it can charge off any light, the suns light fades in the evening and the glow fades at a similar rate so by the time the sun is gone the lamp is dark. That changed the design to a bottle.
The glass was going to last longer, and be easy to come by. Also, the neck of the bottle would act as a handle. After talking with some missionaires, it became apparent that the weight was going to be an important factor, and it needed to be impact resistant. This lead to the current prototype.
It needed to have an light source. A small, aluminum flashlight was chosen. It fit with the shatter resistant tube that the fluorescent powder was fused with. Batteries were chosen for the first model as they were widely available, and simple.
Vialamp is simple. It is a light-weight light source that has an aluminum flashlight, which uses three AAA batteries to power 9 LED's. When the flashlight is on, it works like a traditional light, casting both a beam and using the frosted plastic as a diffuser. During the time the primary light is on, the powder is harvesting the invisible, high powered, ultra-violet rays coming from the light, and converting that power into an afterglow. This glow for a long time at diminishing levels. With two minutes of primary light, the glow can be used to read by for between forty-five minutes and an hour.
Although we are very open to distributing these through all available channels, our initial batches will be going over with Christian missionaries to the African continent. If you know of people who would be able to distribute these as well, please don't hesitate to contact us. We want to help everyone that we can.
Here it is in Action.
Risks and challenges
Vialamp faces many challenges, but many are challenges of the best kind. At this stage, scalable production is the most pressing issue. The success of Vialamp is is unknown and Murdy Global is working to provide patrons with their lamps as quickly as possible. That being said, our lamps are currently hand-assembled, which can take some time. While Murdy Global is confident in the success of this campaign, and anticipate a delivery in June, we hope that our patrons will be understanding if delivery is later than expected.
