I think that to understand his speeches you don't need to learn specifically political language, as his speeches are aimed at the people and not other politicians. They are fairly easy to understand and Hitler speaks pretty much Standard German. He is of course from Austria but during his public appearances he doesn't speak dialect. So you'll probably just have to learn the normal daily language, I don't think there is a quick route to understanding only his speeches.

You could also ask /r/askhistorians about the historical assesment of Hitler. I live in a town where there are around 100 memorials and monuments of WW2 and have several family members and acquaintances who have been in camps during that time period, so I think you can guess what my opinion of this man is.

However, I don't agree with the stupid downvoting. It's of course a very sensitive subject (especially among speakers of German) but I think it's generally a good idea to be interested in history. I wouldn't tell any German what your reason for studying German is though, it won't go well.

Thanks for the calm and honest response. Good to know he didn't have a dialect.

There are 100s of reasons to learn German, but I can't say that learning German solely to make sure people weren't misinterpreting Hitler of all people will be worth it.

You can always read German political philosophers, but truthfully there's nothing in Hitler's speeches that translations haven't covered. Go at it with a dictionary if you wish, but if you don't want to learn "useless" (Tee, Brot, und Kartoffel are pretty important in German-speaking countries) words then what's the point of wanting fluency?

Get a dictionary and translate key words, probably your best bet...

How can I translate key words without understanding the pronunciation?

I can listen to a speech, but how do you expect me to write the words down?

Pronunciation in German is incredibly straightforward. How something *sounds will almost always match how it is written. German phonology does not require so much effort, it's not like learning a new alphabet...the only complications would be ö ä ü ß. Not that hard, to be honest.

But I stand by the original point: there is very little that you will find in a speech that hasn't been covered before...read a translation side by side the original if you feel like historians have...misrepresented Hitler.

This is a decent way to get down on paper what you hear if you're willing to put the time in.

Just listen sentence by sentence while reading a transcript. You'll be able to tell if it's different.

Compare the German transcript with an English translation. This will teach you German. After doing this for about 100 hours, your German should be getting pretty good and you will probably be able to read or listen to the rest of the speeches pretty well with only the occasional need to look at a dictionary or grammar reference.

Or study german at university for four years. Or self study with standard course books for about 900 hours

There's no script to begin it, or else I would just have translated it.

Either your Google is broken or you are wanting to examine one rare speech - which is not something you mentioned.

His major speeches are all over the Internet in German, English and other languages. There are videos and audio recordings.

Redditor for 19 hours, starts thread about Hitler...

[–]ilovehentai 4ポイント5ポイント  (11子コメント)

I would imagine there are already translated scripts of his speeches out there, no? You would basically have to learn the language to fluency (including words you find useless imo) to really be able to comprehend everything he is saying.

Any reason you want to understand Hitler better...?

this has to be a meme

This could be interesting for you.

I believe it's the only non-speech recording of Hitler. A private conversation with Mannerheim in 1942.

Sounds completely different.

Okay.

Start with the speeches here. They have English and German. Start by learning the common words used in those speeches, they'll probably show up in later ones. If you think something is being mistranslated, use a German dictionary and look that word up.

Once you've gone through all of those, see if you can understand the other ones.

uhhh 4chan is leaking... no offence, but that's straight up weird... his speeches have probably been translated anyway...

[–]Gevlo[S] 0ポイント1ポイント  (12子コメント)

They haven't. I don't see what's weird about taking interest in what one of the most, if not the most vilified man in history said. I honestly don't comprehend how someone can regard it as "weird". My position is pretty neutral, I just want to translate everything that was said. Just like someone interviewing a murderer just wants to learn more about the what/when/why/how.

[–]Lady_Anarchy|LT N|EN C2|ES C1|FR B2|GL C1| 0ポイント1ポイント  (11子コメント)

i mean, alright, but it's a rather specific interest you have, y'know... and it raises certain concerns...

[–]Gevlo[S] 0ポイント1ポイント  (10子コメント)

What kind of concerns?

[–]Lady_Anarchy|LT N|EN C2|ES C1|FR B2|GL C1| 0ポイント1ポイント  (9子コメント)

well... why exactly you would need to personally translate HITLER'S speeches and what you're trying to achieve with that..?

[–]Gevlo[S] -1ポイント0ポイント  (8子コメント)

To make up my own perception of him, rather the perspective fed to us from the allies. History is written by the victors, and I intend to look at history as it was, not as it is taught to us.

Not to mention, in about a decade or so, I intend to learn German completely and dig into the archives.

[–]Lady_Anarchy|LT N|EN C2|ES C1|FR B2|GL C1| 0ポイント1ポイント  (7子コメント)

hmh... but why specifically Hitler? so many other things happened in history... why not start at the origins..?

[–]Gevlo[S] -1ポイント0ポイント  (6子コメント)

Because Hitler is the most vilified man in history, and I want to find out the truth.

you'd be surprised...
