Notice, every country writes which country they are from. Americans write what city they are from.

It tends to make sense when you consider that most of these countries are about the size of a state in the USA. Most Americans identify with their state the same way members of the UK identify with their country.

Bad example, tell a Liverpudlian that he's the same as a Londoner and see how far that one gets you.

That's just not true, accents and various things change more wildly across our counties than your States, an English person asks where I'm from I say Somerset, not fucking England.

You Americans get away with saying what state/city your from because we know enough about that country to know what you mean, 90% of Americans won't know what Somerset or Dorset are, but 90% of the English can name probably 20 States.

I'm Canadian, I usually write Canadian even though there are huge variances between provinces and territories.

He noted New Orleans because Louisiana politics have been notoriously crooked for many generations. If you want some intro to the fun learn about Huey P. Long.

It would make less sense if a guy from Boise Idaho was noting his experience with corrupted politics

It's almost like reddit is based in the US or something.

Because our cities are as populous as most countries.

Ireland pop = 4.6m. Philadelphia metro pop = 6m. Quick Google confirmed.

Edit: as aforementioned, Brazil does not fit this narrative.

So you take one of the smallest countries and tie it up with America's biggest metropolitan population, sure, this sure as hell doesn't make it most cities are bigger than most countries. Even NYC who's city alone reaches 8.5 million is still smaller than an average size country such as France, Zimbabwe, Syria, Chile, even North fucking Korea.

America is a pretty big country. Makes sense when a difference of a few hundred miles is often entirely separate nations elsewhere.
