Mr. Levin,

Thank you very much for your work and thank you for giving Reddit a chance. Young people aren't all blindly liberal as NYC/LA media would have you believe. And Reddit is a good method of ranking and filtering arguments and content without relying on professional media people.

I feel conservative media has split into the camps, one that wants to win no matter what and one that has real values. Ted Cruz/Marco Rubio/Rand Paul/Carly Fiorina are everything the Tea Party wanted and are a coup d'etat of the Republican Party. And right when that is about to be cemented in, some guys have given up in favor of ratings. I'm very glad that you and Glenn Beck had some backbone.

My question: Do you feel conservatism has been properly explained? I feel most conservative media just assumes that liberalism is wrong but falls short of explaining why. For examples:

Should there be any federal minimum wage? Is Medicare a bad idea? Is there any role for government when private charity is falling short? Should the federal government redistribute dollars to poorer states from wealtier ones? Should hospitals be forced to treat patients? Should there be a standing national army or state militias?

I don't expect you to give me all these answers, but where should I go for these questions? The hard questions?

Milton Friedman did a series with PBS called "Right to Choose" in 1980 and again in 1990 where a lot of your questions are answered. Ayn Rand also writes about a lot of these topics in "Capitalism: The Unknown Ideal" including some specifics on what defines a Conservative.

[–]zeperf [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

Thanks! I thought of Milton Friedman, but was kind of curious whether there is a contemporary thinker on these subjects (not that there is anything new about the subjects). I'm not sure Friedman is palatable to younger people. Hoping for someone like Ben Shapiro. Ben Sasse is doing a great job, but isn't exactly a media person. Dan Carlin's Common Sense podcast is a good format and Intelligence Squared is a good format, but they aren't about conservatism.

How do you maintain sanity following politics every day? I've followed heavily for the last year and I already feel burned-out...and I don't even write or commentate on the stuff!

[–]MarkRLevinMark Levin[S] [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

There are times, /u/beer_n_guns, when I have to step away from it all. But then I get re-energized and motivated when I consider what's at stake. I'm one of a handful blessed with the opportunity to speak to a large number of people through the radio and LevinTV. And so, I want to take maximum advantage of these opportunities to speak to as many of you as possible and to hear from you as well.

Hi Mark! - Are there any little-known conservatives in Congressional or Gubernatorial races that we should be paying attention to and supporting?

[–]EverlovinConstitutionalist [スコア非表示]  (1子コメント)

Hi Mark. Your show changed me from a Moderate liberal to a constitutional conservative slowly over a few years. One day you said "Liberalism is driven by emotion and conservatism is driven buy experience and logic" and it clicked for me. I don't have a question, but I just want to say thanks very much, for getting me through a boring work day and the values and wisdom you have taught me. I'm going to check out Levin TV ASAP. Can't Wait!

I've always said that I am a conservative first, and a Republican second. That being said, I have voted for Republican presidents since I was first old enough to vote (Ronald Reagan in 1980).

I think that if Trump can be held under 1237 before the convention, Cruz will end up as the nominee at the convention. However, if Trump can't be stopped, I am really struggling with the thought of having to actually vote for Trump because I find him to be despicable and dangerous. Voting for Trump seems much different to me than holding my nose and voting for McCain or Romney for example.

The Republican Party does not seem to represent or support conservatism or conservatives, and has done all it can to not support Ted Cruz.

  1. Why should I support their nominee if it's Trump?
  2. Why hasn't the party brought more pressure to bear on Kasich to drop out?

[–]Im_Rick_Grimes [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

What do you see as the future of the GOP if Trump is nominated and loses the general election?

Conversely, what is the future of the GOp if he wins the general election?

[–]ballpitcher [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

Hey Mark, If the GOP is doomed to end, what party do you see rising? Is the Libertarian Party going to become popular or would a Conservative Party take the place of the GOP?

[–]BlackDread [スコア非表示]  (1子コメント)

Mark,

You have long been a defender of the original intent of our Constitution. I have always struggled with the question of whether Constitution grants (or intended to grant) the Supreme Court of the United States the authority to categorically strike down state and federal law as unconstitutional. I am wondering whether you believe that judicial review is an appropriate power of the Supreme Court. Thank you, sir.

(I apologize if you have clearly articulated this position before.)

[–]MarkRLevinMark Levin[S] [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

First, let me suggest that you read a copy of my first book, Men in Black, where I address this and other issues at great length.

You've really asked two questions here: where does the Supreme Court's power of judicial review come from and does it have the power to strike down state and federal laws. I believe judicial review outside of those areas specifically mention in the Constitution, or authorize under various judiciary acts passed by Congress, are implied, if legitimate at all. As you may know, the federal circuit courts and federal district courts are created by acts of Congress. Congress also has the power to limit the jurisdiction of these courts, although, it almost never does.

As to your second point about striking down state and federal laws, it depends on the facts. If a state passes a law that clearly usurps a federally granted power under the constitution, then a federal court will strike it down. But again, I would need to know the facts from each case.

[–]TedCruz4President [スコア非表示]  (4子コメント)

Hi Mark!

How likely do you think Ted Cruz is to become the nominee if there is a contested/brokered convention?

Thank you!

[–]MarkRLevinMark Levin[S] [スコア非表示]  (3子コメント)

Hi, /u/TedCruz4President.

That's a very good question.

I don't think it's impossible, but I do think it's difficult for either Cruz or Trump because the GOP establishment may well have control of the convention process. Should the convention decide the nominee, it may take several ballots until a nominee is agreed to. It wouldn't be the first time in history. For example, in 1860, William Seward went in to the Republican Convention with a large plurality of the delegates. However, after the third round of voting, Abraham Lincoln was nominated. So, while it would be difficult, it is possible.

[–]20Se7en [スコア非表示]  (2子コメント)

Your breakdown of the 1860 convention was AWESOME!https://www.conservativereview.com/commentary/2016/03/levin-how-lincoln-won-a-brokered-convention I found myself sharing it with as many people as I could. Only one thing troubled me however about that election. Our nation fell into civil war, and I am not entirely sure the election of Abraham Lincoln didn't help that along. I think it would be great to get into more history like this on your show and LevinTV.

[–]moanerific [スコア非表示]  (1子コメント)

I would say the war was inevitable anyway. Lincoln not getting the nomination may have postponed it, but I don't think there was a way to resolve the slavery issue democratically at that point.

[–]YosoffNatural Rights Conservative [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

They were getting close. In attempts to prevent secession Republicans offered a constitutional amendment to make slavery permanent on all current slave states. The show-stopper was expansion of slavery into the new states (especially Texas & California).

[–]editdroid [スコア非表示]  (1子コメント)

Many liberals want to paint conservatives as heartless people who don't want to help people in need. Although we understand that isn't true, could you mention some of your personal favorite initiatives that you feel should exist, just not funded by the government?

[–]MarkRLevinMark Levin[S] [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

Thank you for your question, /u/editdroid.

I think almost EVERY charity should be funded primarily by private, voluntary donations. When the federal government gets involved in deciding which charities are preferred over others, the decisions are often driven more by politics than by objective standards. Also, the federal government creates an environment where people are less-likely to make private donations because they figure that the federal government will pay for whatever the cause is. So, again, without getting in to specifics, I think the better policy is to keep charity mostly private.

[–]MarkRLevinMark Levin[S] [スコア非表示]  (1子コメント)

Hi, /u/chabanais

I believe Kasich is in the race for several reasons, none of which are acceptable to me. He's hoping that the convention WILL choose the nominee and the establishment will rally around him; or either Trump or Cruz will choose him as their VP running-mate in order to get his delegates; or he's delusional. In any event, his refusal to get out of this race is harming Cruz because I believe that in a one-on-one contest, Cruz could well beat Trump.

Hi Mark, I've been loving LevinTV. Looking forward to the interview!

I have two questions. First, what is the proper response to the disgusting hit piece by the literal tabloid journalists at the National Enquirer? Many Trumpsters on this site have been repeating it as if it were gospel truth. How should conservatives fight back against the spreading of horrible lies and misinformation?

Second, you expressed yesterday that it was getting harder and harder to remain committed to the GOP. If it's discovered that Trump's campaign personally ordered the hit piece from the Enquirer, much like when they ordered the piece that falsely claimed Carson left a sponge in the brain of a patient when Carson was threatening Trump's lead, will that be the straw that breaks the camel's back for you? Here's a source for the connection between Trump and the National Enquirer, if you're interested.

How did we get from 6 justices on SCOTUS to 9? They used to need a super-majority (4/6) to over rule the lower court. Seems an even number would be better. How did we end up at an odd number?

Do you think it is possible that Ted Cruz can still win the nomination and prevent a contested convention? If so, what does he need to do to make that happen?

[–]Bernie4Sander [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

The latest numbers I hear are 80% of remaining delegates to outright win for Cruz. Trump needs to win 55% of the remaining delegates to get to 1237.

[–]thatguy1496 [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

What is your response to the #NeverTrump crowd?  I hate to see this nation fall under Hellery Clinton, but why should we compromise our beliefs just because the nominee has an "R" by their name?  How far left is too far for a nominee to make us stand up and say no?

[–]dmturner1232 [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

Mark,

Do you feel the way I do, that when Donald Trump calls Ted Cruz "Lyin' Ted" every single day - he is really calling all movement conservatives liars? I remember the battles that we've fought for and who was and who wasn't on our side. Maybe I'm taking it personally, but I feel like Trump is calling millions of conservatives liars. How can he possibly unite the Party this way? I won't vote for Trump regardless (because of the Hamilton Rule) - and I can't help but think the destruction of the GOP was part of his motivation. What do you think?

[–]jl97332 [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

How do conservatives combat the cult of personality that has taken over American politics?

My question is what can I do as a conservative all the way over here? Sometimes I feel like the race has left me in the dust being that I can't volunteer to a campaign, attend any speeches, etc.

Last I just wanted to mention that I am 26 and I got all of your books for my girlfriend and her family as a christmas gift!

Mark, no matter how I slice it, and to my dismay, Hillary appears increasingly inevitable. [–]MarkRLevinMark Levin[S] [スコア非表示]  (1子コメント)

Hello, /u/MrUnderhillDelta.

History tends to swing back-and-forth so I would never say that conservatives are forever unable to win the Presidency. As a matter of fact, the last time a conservative was nominated for president by the republican party, he won two MASSIVE landslides. I believe that is possible again.

Hello Mark Levin! First off, I saw you at CPAC earlier in the year, and your speech was awesome. My questions for you are...

With the election cycle being as hectic as it is, do you feel that if Donald Trump gets the nomination, would you wind up voting for him (and why)?

What do you predict will happen at the convention should neither candidate achieve the 1237 delegates they need from the state primaries?

With the idea of libertarianism, how do you think it will impact conservative ideas and principles in the future?

Thank you for taking the time to do this!

Hi Mark,

Prior to this election, I always saw America to be mostly divided between red and blue states. I realize there has been a divide between Conservatives and Republicans, but still it often felt like "two Americas".

But with the rise of Trump and Bernie, our country seems more divided than ever. If the National Enquirer hit piece is tied to Trump, I will have a hard time supporting him in November.

How much of this division is a direct result of Barack Obama and his policies? Will the Republican Party ever unite behind either Trump or Cruz?

Thanks for taking time to talk with us!

But I consider your show a free course in all of these things! I've been listening to you since I was thirteen, and I've learned a lot.

My question is this: You've talked a lot about how we can elect the right candidates, but ultimately we the people must be the ones to bring our government back--through a convention of the states as described in the Constitution. So what can I as part of a young generation do to help get some momentum behind this idea?

Hi Mark. Hope I caught you, thanks for being here.

With all the substantive due process going on with our Supreme Court, along with the loss of Scalia, I know you're concerned about the swing against the constitutional balance of power.

My question is, why do conservatives against substantive due process so rarely bring up the Lochner Era of the court?

It seems to me people who support unenumerated constitutional rights are willing to do so when it fits an agenda, but when it doesn't, they cry foul (like in West Coast Hotel). Bringing up that point seems valuable in the fight against SDP.

Just wondering if you could speak to that. I figure your answer will be just that the cherrypicking of fundamental rights is evidence of hypocrisy, but I would love to hear your thoughts on the Lochner era in general.

Quite a few of my friends who I connect with online(all of my friends who I connect with in the real world are lefties) are huge on Trump and everything Trump stands for. When we do calls I end up on my own defending my values, so I was wondering if you had any tips to becoming a better debater and if you could recommend books on free trade/protectionism and abortion/person-hood.

Now my second question is very much rooted in my disdain for what Canada has become. I highly doubt you keep up to date with Canadian politics, but needless to say it's not a good situation for any fan of liberty. Now, I went to Poland recently and received my citizenship, and am now faced with a choice, should I choose to join the Polish military or should I choose to stay in my home town and go to University. I always hear about people threatening to leave the US but is it actually a reasonable thing to do?

Mr Levin,

Often you talk about the need to have a convention of states to propose amendments to the constitution. You seem very optimistic about the idea to undo many liberal programs at the federal level using article 2. However, a great many people from nearly every state would need to be involved. Hundreds of legislators from across the nation would need to vote their approval.

So my question is this: how can you be so optimistic that such a massive undertaking would succeed when smaller institutions controlled by conservatives like the U.S. house of representatives can't even get a basic budget together?

I am a daily listener of your show and though I don't agree with you all the time I do find it mentally stimulating during my end of day commute home.

Glad your back.

Will your new show Levin TV have guest hosts? ..not that anyone could fill your desk.

TT

I think Howie car or bongino could fill in but the lady from California (sorry forgot her name) would have to fly cross country to get to the studio

[–]Tweetest [スコア非表示]  (1子コメント)

hehe ..personally, I'd like to see Mark Stein behind that desk on occasion.

Hi Mark. First if like to thank you for all that you do for the furtherance of liberty. Secondly, what your thoughts, if any, about Ted Cruz' Father, Raphael Cruz? He is a very religious man. And, it seems he is under attack by the secular left. I'm sure this will be a high light of the left in the general. I've listened to his father and personally find nothing wrong out offensive. Wondering if you had some thoughts on this.

Hi Mark. If you were to be a kitchen appliance, what would you be, and why?

Hi Mark, new listener to your program and I appreciate you educating us.

With the recent report of the Ted Cruz sex scandal (by the same reporter who broke the John Edwards story), do you believe this will have a negative impact on his campaign and especially the Evangelical voters?

What are your thoughts on the NE story?

[–]FelixRodriguez88 [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

Hi Mr. Levin. I love Levin.TV. I was probably one of your first subscribers. President Reagan used many forms of "protectionism". 45% tariff on motorcycles, 100% tariff on some semiconductors, import quotas on fruit. He made deals to have Japanese car plants built here. Secretary Baldridge threatened South Korea with a 100% tariff. This all sounds like Donald Trump. Was President Reagan wrong to do so, and if he was does this disqualify him from being a true conservative?

Hi Mark, Would Ted Cruz be able to threaten to file lawsuit against Trump and the Enquirer with regard to the slanderous comments about him and his lovely wife Heidi. I am a 100% supporter of Ted Cruz and believe he is an honest and upright man.

[–]CKL2014 [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

Yes, but since Cruz is a public figure, he would also need to show malice in order to have any shot at winning.

I think the women in the story should sue. Their reputations are harmed, too and they have an easier road to victory.

Mr. Levin, I assume Trump is already preparing for the nomination. Who do you think are in the discussion for Vice? Also, do you think, with the anti-Trump movement, that the Repiblican Party would be able to get over this Civil War without a wide dissatisfaction?

What do you think the most important thing is for the GOP to do at the moment to stop Hillary Clinton from this movement

[–]Jmabv [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

To me, I believe that Republicans(and all flavors under that umbrella) will start to win if and only if we can manage to become more then just a political label. I think the biggest problem we have is that we allow ourselves to be solely wrapped in that identity. Republicans need to talk and have vocal voices about more stuff. We need to talk sports and movies and video games. One reason Milo Yinappolis is so popular is that people can relate to him. People play video games and they do tech stuff and so does Milo! Our minds connect us to him because of this shared habit. I feel if we branched out more like this it would be beneficial to normalizing us to other people. Otherwise all they have to go on is our political beliefs. If they don't believe it already then they have nothing to relate to us on. But talking about how awesome Batman V Superman was or wasn't gives us something to connect over. Once people see that were a little bit like them we have a better chance of exposing them to our ideals. If all we are is politics, they have nothing to relate to and dismiss us because we're clearly "not like them" at all.

What do you think about this?

I love your style mark! How do you feel about Rand Paul and the liberty movement. Will it gain steam and influence the nation or die out? What do you forsee happening?

[–]LakelandPatriot [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

Mark, seriously, who has more influence in Washington DC circles regarding formation of foreign and domestic policy? ... Senators and Congressmen? ... or Washington bureaucrats in the boardrooms of the heavily influential Washington policy think tanks?

Mark re: Loretta Lynch. ( http://www.judicialwatch.org/document-archive/hrc-order-proof/) She was named a witness for what would have been an empaneled Grand Jury investigating HRC (found it toto per the Judicial Watch recently published HRC Order of Proof per the OIC witness list. Pages 18 and 19.) Further Lynch attended high ranking meetings with HRC, WJC, et al during the WJC 1992 Presidential Campaign, Lynch generously donated many times to both HRC and WJC, moreover Lynch was appointed to Eastern District of NY Attorney General's office in 1999 by WJC. Lynch's initial appointment, donations, executive to WJC Presidential Campaign, and most alarming was to be called as a witness to the Grand Jury (refer to pages 18 and 19 of the OIC doc.) are just a few justifications for Lynch to recuse herself from the ongoing DOJ investigation(s) of HRC. This was not asked of her before either Judiciary committee. Clearly there are numerous conflicts dating back to 1985. Thoughts ... thank you.

Mark, I believe last year you discussed Islamo-naziism on your radio show, I believe it was in January. I have tried and tried to find that particular show and cannot. Can you direct me to the link where I could find it? It was a wonderfully explained history lesson on hitler and Islam.
Thank you!

Hi Mark - what is the conservative position on welfare?

I understand it should be at the state level (not federal) but what type of system would you advocate for? Only charity? Guaranteed income (negative income tax)? Or means-test + workfare requirement? etc.

We have heard Obama state there's no real difference between Communism and Capitalism. In the 20th Century we had Mises, Friedman, and Rand among others who argued for and explained Free Market Capitalism and how it embraces Liberty. Who do we have today that argues for Free Market Capitalism in the same manner of these great intellectuals?

Do you think Donald Trump is a conservative? Why or why not?

[–]JuanOrez [スコア非表示]  (1子コメント)

Mark,

You speak out against the establishment but the person you endorse is actively working with that establishment to force a contested convention (Bush endorsement, Virginia delegates switching etc.). Can you explain why you still defend Cruz and his establishment leanings?

[–]dmturner1232 [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

I find it interesting that Cruz gets attacked for not knowing how to get along with anyone, and at the same time getting a coalition to support HIS values. Same thing about his campaign strategy...How dare he TRY TO WIN? After Romney all I heard about was how we didn't try hard enough to win. We need to quit talking out of both sides of our mouths.

Mark I have no idea why you gave campaign donations to Mr. Bevin against Senator McConnell. The The people any state will always vote for their reigning Senators. They don't want to lose that states seniority any thus lose state perks. Bevin had no chance. Another reason for term limits.
