Manchester United is worth almost $1BILLION less than when Louis van Gaal took over as manager.

The Dutchman moved to Old Trafford in the summer of 2014, replacing former boss David Moyes.

His first game in charge was a 7-0 friendly win over LA Galaxy on July 24 2014 as the club embarked on their pre-season tour.

But since the clash in the States, it has been revealed over $1billion has been wiped off the club's share price value.

Analysts suggested splashing out on expensive players and subsequent failures on the pitch had a detrimental effect.

United's share price has dropped by $6.25 since July 2014, from $19.58 to $13.33, on the close of the New York Stock Exchange on March 23 2016.

Over the same period, the US stock market has risen by 3 percent.

Laith Khalaf, a market analyst for Hargreaves Landsdown, discussed just what this means for the Red Devils.

"Football clubs typically don’t present a particularly attractive investment proposition because their revenues are lumpy, and their employees are rather expensive," he said.

"Mistakes on the pitch can be costly for shareholders too – in 2015 Manchester United’s broadcast revenues dropped by £30 million as it failed to qualify for the Champions League in that season.

"So far this year things seem to be picking up with a bounce in revenues, but if the club fails to qualify for the Champions League this season, next year could be a fallow one for investors."

Last month, United's shares dropped dramatically again with $82million wiped off in just hours.

The club's market value has suffered a spectacular decline in recent months - despite the club announcing a record revenue and huge commercial growth in their latest financial results.

And the market value will be severely impacted again this term, should United miss out on the top four.

Under-pressure: United fans are calling for a change at the top

United sit sixth in the Premier League following last weekend's Manchester derby, just a point behind fourth-placed City.

Nevertheless, Van Gaal remains under-pressure at Old Trafford after another lacklustre season with fans growing disillusioned with his style of play.

Jose Mourinho is the favourite to take over with some reports suggesting he has signed a pre-contract agreement with the club.
