Jokes on him, the Christmas he and likely every other student on Christmas break celebrate anyways has been secularized and commercialized to hell. I don't care what it's called whether I believe in god or not, Christmas isn't a christian holiday.

It IS called Christmas. but the break is actually NOT christmas break as there are other holidays during that period being observed. There is no "jewish thanksgiving" going on during thanksgiving. We don't have a second holiday competing with the 4th of july.

Very literally, this period is a "holiday period", especially when you factor in new years. We absolutely call the holiday specifically "Christmas", but the period should be called "holiday".

Also, Christmas is NOT merely american at all. Travel a bit. It's like Valentine's day in many places across the world. That's how little the holiday has to visibly do with Christianity.

It really has nothing to do with Christianity, except to the extent that Christians moves their celebration to coincide with pagan celebrations to reduce prosecution. Jesus wasn't born in December according to the Bible.

Calling it "Christmas break" makes no sense, because it's two weeks long. Christmas isn't two weeks long, so why should Christmas break be two weeks long? Thanksgiving break makes sense to me, because you get Thanksgiving off, and the days before and after. That allows for travel time and other Thanksgiving related traditions (like Black Friday). If you got Christmas off, and a day or two before and after, I could see calling it a Christmas break.

Furthermore, we already have breaks that are specific to each season. In the summer kids get a few months off and we call that summer break. In the spring, kids get a week or two off and we call that spring break. I don't know how common this last one is, but when I was in school we got a week off in the fall and we called that fall break. So why break that pattern and name the break in the winter after a holiday? Should we start calling summer break "Independence Day break"?

In Australia, we have our Summer break over Christmas. In my day (and possibly still to this day) it was known as Christmas holidays. they go for 6 weeks. at the end of term 1 (about 2 more weeks to go) it was known as Easter holidays because Easter was usually at that time or just before. the 2 other end of term holidays didn't have any holiday associated with it so they were just "holidays".

Is Santa Claus used in your Christmas imagery down there? And if so, is he wearing a parka/snowboots like in the Northern Hemisphere?

Do you have Christmas carols? Do any of them mention snow or winter? Do you use the same ones we use up here?

Christmas is so intrinsically linked to winter up here I've always wondered what it was like having Christmas over the summer months.

Fun fact: "Jingle Bells" was written for American Thanksgiving. It's become widely associated with Christmas, but none of its verses contain any references thereto.

Technically, that's Christmastide, running from Christmas Eve to First Vespers, and falls between Advent and Epiphanytide.

Ironically (perhaps), it is Christmastide -- aka Christmas Season -- that Christians referred to when saying "Season's Greetings" or "Happy Holidays". These phrases are not recent and not secular inventions in some supposed "war on Christmas".

(Similarly, the shortening of Christmas to Xmas was also a Christian invention. The 'X' here is the Greek letter Chi, representing Christ, and part of the Chi Rho christogram.)
