I live in the US and you're right. People just go to Hawai'i and Florida for vacations and shit. I have some family in Australia, and they're the only people in my family who have left the continent. I just applied for a passport and will start traveling soon.

To be fair, the US is so huge and diverse sometimes you don't feel like you have to leave to experience other cultures.

It's not exactly other cultures, but you can vacation in the US and see tons of different shit, most cities all have different feels to them and we have a ton of national parks so you can get different urban feels and different nature feels all within the country.

'Well we have Chinese food here, so I've pretty much been to Asia'

Visit Yellowstone National Park. China comes to you via tour bus every 15 minutes.

I had this happen to me when I was in Paris. I went to the Palace of Versailles and I was in a room with about 100 other people. I was the only white person and the rest were Chinese

It is easier to find a Chinese restaurant in the local towns than a burger joint, too!

Have you ever even been to Chinatown in some cities? Sure I'd rather actually go to China but they still make you think you're in a different place.

Yes, and they are different to the rest of the city, but most districts of a city differ to each other but they are definitely not representative of the country.

A lot of the food you see in American/Canadian Chinese restaurants isn't really very Chinese. Stuff like General Tao's chicken, Cream Cheese wontons, Cashew chicken, etc. are as American as New England clam chowder and Louisiana gumbo.

But on the other hand, there really are some authentic places

That is true. Of course, that will depend on where you go to and where you are. If you're in a small town with a limited overseas Chinese population, the restaurants will try to adapt to suit local tastes. If you're in a big city with a huge immigrant population, the food tends to be more authentic. The same goes for many cultural groups overseas.

It is way easier to get to a big city than another country... that is why most people travel internally.

He didn't say Chinese restaurants. He said Chinatown.

Maybe because lot of the Chinese cuisine uses endangered species. Bird's Nest Soup, shark fin soup, snapping turtles, braised Pangolin...

.../s?

I think he meant other cultures within the US. "American" culture is supposedly a conglomeration of like 12 distinct regional subcultures.

Nope, the US is not really culturally diverse compared to most countries.

What weirds me out are people who can afford it and have the time but just don't ever go overseas.

I really have no desire to go overseas before I visit some much cooler places here in America.

EXACTLY!!! Take for example my Aunt and Uncle, super super well off. Combined they make around 200K a year. They take 2 vacations a year. One to Hawaii and one to Vegas. My aunt has actually gone to Hawaii every year of her life. I understand really liking a place and wanting to visit often, but I would at least switch it up every once in a while.

200k combined is hardly "super super well off." That's barely scraping by where I live.

Where I live it's 4x the minimum income to support a family of 5.

Wanna know how I know that you haven't started traveling yet?

I wish I could travel, but flying other than in the country is incredibly expensive. I was going to go to Italy this year, but the flights just going up and up in price and I couldn't afford it.
