It's an excellent question! Just a few thoughts; I'm sure others will be along shortly with more comprehensive responses. It's important to develop a skeptical outlook, and not believe something just because it's in print (you already know that about the internet, which puts you streets ahead of many people). Factual statements should be referenced if not easily verifiable. Conclusions drawn from the evidence as well as the author's personal opinions should be identifiable as such. Anything that is written to support an author's existing ideological position is almost certainly not going to be good history (in other words, know an author's background).
