The fuel itself isn't what initially detonates, it's the diesel fumes contained within the fuel tank.

But, diesel fumes cannot be the cause, Diesel doesn't readily evaporate like Gasoline will.

War Thunder isn't modeled to that complexity I'm afraid, as far as I know detonation chance is just given a flat % chance depending on the shell. The Soviet's tested their T-34 and found that fuel tank detonations were caused by partially filled tanks and fume accumulation, the optimal level for detonation was around 10%-15% of fuel remaining and using a shell in equal to, or in excess of 75mm with ~50-100g TNT equivalent bursting charge, that was enough to blow the armour open or deform it significantly.

Wasn't that why Russian fuel tanks were charged with CO2 (maybe I'm remembering this wrong?), to prevent the fumes from going kaboom?

Diesel will combust under enough compression - look up 2-stroke diesel engines

Yeah diesel will combust under compression but heat sources aren't a way to provide compression. With diesel fuel the only thing causing it to combust is the pre-heating that takes place in the glow plug combined with a huge amount of compression vs. Normal gas compression ratios. Technically OP is right... sort of

glow plugs are only used to start diesel engines - once the engine reaches operating temps, they aren't used.

Also, if an IED can cause JP-8 to burn, I'm sure the diesel used by the Germans in WWII can burn as well.

Your mistake is to apply logic to a situation that clearly demands 70-year-old emotion.

2/3 comments complaining about t-34s. Yep, this is /r/warthunder.

this subreddit is something like half German players, it shouldn't be a surprise

[–]Fleet_Admiral_Chris[S] 3ポイント4ポイント  (8子コメント)

But I'm not German. I just like some of their tanks...

He means people who play Germany.

[–]Fleet_Admiral_Chris[S] 1ポイント2ポイント  (6子コメント)

I do play Germany, but I'm not a Wehraboo.

That's what a wehraboo would say...

Thats what a Burgerboo sympathizer would say

Are you quoting from the "How to Wehraboo" handbook right now?

Burgerboo

The term is freeaboo, commie.

Diesel can light from being compressed. Diesel engines don't actually need spark plugs to work.

Obviously in War Thunder its speed up, but burning diesel fuel spraying the entire crew compartment is a dead tank that you get out of as fast as possible, similar to how ammo ignition doesn't instantly kill everyone but you don't stick around either.

The autoignition temperature of Diesel is 493 °F (256 °C). If it reaches that temperature it will burn. T-72s have diesel fuel and man won't an APFSDS make em' burn.

you think that matters? tanks can be one shot (tank burnt out) by shooting the transmission.

Gaijin has irrelevant info on things as such

I don't know explain how a 88mm gun on the Tiger II can bounce off a T-34 at shallow angles.

I'm not sure why 6 76mm US shells do jack shit to T-34s

[–]Where are my field mod. shermans?ClockworkRaider -2

precision aiming helps, if you can put a solid AP shell into the gunner or the cannon breach that'll let you have time to put an APCBC round into his sides by flanking him, or into the machine gun port and into the ammo or fuel tanks, or you can kill his gunner and continue killing his crew one at a time.

[–]American teams plsJigglepirate 4

Meanwhile T-34-85 use stock round to turn US heavy tank into nuclear fireball with one shot.

[–]Where are my field mod. shermans?ClockworkRaider -1

yeah, and that's why you have to try to make every shot count and use the terrain to your advantage to get around them or catch them when they aren't pointed at you. It is an unfortunate fact that the 85mm will fireball you every time they hit you, and it doesn't look like that will change anytime soon, but in the meantime the APCBC rounds appear to fragment now and actually can be used quite effectively to cause ammo racking and fuel tank explosions on the T-34s

[–]American teams plsJigglepirate 1

Using the terrain to get around them is hard when you spawn on the edges of the map. :(

[–]Where are my field mod. shermans?ClockworkRaider 0

true, the other option is to find a good flanking ambush position near the spawn that you can easily reach before they can rush you and wait. Especially if you are covering the approached to capture points you can kill a bunch of people who get too zoned in on the points to notice you, and then you get plenty of time to put your first round anywhere you want.
