Seriously why do they care? She's talented and pretty it's not surprising she's getting karma.

I can understand a bit of the frustration as the self promotion rules that differ even in the same subreddits. The official site rules for it are unintuitive as well. It's a giant mess trying to determine if you make something you think is cool and try to post it is it stupid or not.

I was reading the AskReddit post about which subs have the dumbest rules, and someone linked to a /r/pics post that I thought was miles more interesting than the normal weight loss/cancer/sob story stuff they upvote. This removed because it links to a gallery and has a URL in the gallery. Okay, he has a link to the source site in the album description. Christine's post talks all about her new book and jobs but the link is in the comments rather than the imgur description. What's the point? They're both technical self promotion spam directing redditors to something the OP created.

What about the "only 1 in 10 posts should be self content" rule the site supposedly has. Why does anyone already famous and certain "reddit famous" users seem to be able to ignore it with no repercussions while some kid doesn't post much so half his posts are his youtube channel so he gets shadowbanned a spammer.

I realized a good portion of the complaints in the Christine posts stem from the fact that she's a talented, attractive woman. There's also a lot of frustrated that have tried to post their own stuff and been blocked before people even have a chance to vote on it.

EDIT: Awesome, someone makes a new account insulting my username and telling me to kill myself and I get a 3 day suspension for this comment both in the same minute so I can't even report the death threat. Death threat user, have fun finding my new account.

I thought the one in ten rule was about linking to your own site or domain. Even that is just a guideline against spam. All of her top submissions have been to Imgur; GW would suck if it was about self content. Anyways, she does participate in the comments and within other subs as well. She definitely does not meet the criteria for r/UpvoteBecauseGirl, her work is beyond incredible.

If the problem is a link in the Imgur album, fix it and resubmit it. I don't see what the big deal is.

Her work is great, but it's just something about it is so offputting to me. Everything about it is designed to impress and it feels weird. It's like walking through a trailer park in alabama then seeing someone with a suit in a nice car going to their job in a top 100 law firm.

It's too well done or over the top I guess?

Not only that but its weird to me that she seems to try to fit herself in every gallery with some photoshoot-esque way.

I mean, part of that is that her work is intentionally surrealist or horror-influenced in that it intentionally contrasts glamorized representations of reality with something altogether unreal. 50s housewife meets Cthulhu sort of thing. As to the "designed to impress", it's probably the photoediting that is done to give the images an over-processed feel that is definitely intentional.

Yeah, it's like, worse than those 50s movie posters. It's very abrasive to me.

See I like it for those reasons. It feels like a really honest form of self promotion. She knows her work is great, but she's not too smug about it. And she's appropriately appreciative of reddit without a lot of the inauthentic kind of humility that creeps in to a lot of self promotion.

She knows she's amazing, but she's so pleasant about it. There's no part of me that can dislike that.

I completely understand why people feel as though they are being manipulated looking at it. All she's doing is taking ideas others Martha Stewart types have done better before and playing on her looks. There is a lack of authenticity and humility that permeates her posts. If her work was at least bit unique, I think there would be less of a negative reaction to her.

To be fair, all this Martha Stewart but nerdy type stuff gets upvoted if its well done.

Yeah dude, aspiring professional artists should do more mediocre work! It makes no sense for them to work really hard to make impressive stuff! Anyone who doesnt slack off and accept a life of pushing pencils working a crummy office job is just a try hard jerk!

I agree that it obviously takes a lot of skill, hard work, etc. to make content that has that kind of production values, but it also obviously takes a lot of money, and that's one thing that I think bothers people. It's like a soapbox derby where one kid had his dad pay for a consultant and rent a wind tunnel to work on the aerodynamics; yes he probably worked harder than the other kids and made the best car, but that doesn't mean it's sportsmanlike in the context of a kids' soapbox derby as opposed to Formula 1.

Gallery vs. Comments makes some sense. It's the difference between having candy bars on the candy aisle vs. having them beside the register.

Edit: Jeez, someone was feeling testy.

[–]LegoDeathGod -67ポイント-66ポイント  (9子コメント)

Someone telling you to stab your own eyes out is a death threat?

edit: It might suck, but it is no death threat.

Edit 2: I'm not condoning the 'stab your eyes' comment, it's just not a death threat.
Oblig. the downvote button is not an 'I disagree' button, people.

Pedanic - A person who is excessively concerned with minor details and rules or with displaying academic learning.

Uh-huh, sure. I'm just using the grown-up definition of 'death threat'. I suppose a reasonable person would clearly know
"Stab yourself in the eye" = "Go kill yourself" (classic internet goto) = "I'm going to kill you" = DEATH THREAT!

Don't give me this shit over being pedantic. MikeMiller liked to comment to Circlebroke and certainly knew "stab yourself in the eye" was nowhere near a death threat. Whoever made the FuckMike account was an asshole and maybe the actual MikeMiller should have reported it to the admins and the police if he felt his life was threatened. Since he deleted his account, jack shit is going to happen. Hell, even Quinn and Wu still have their Reddit accounts and they have gotten way worse shit said to them.

I mean... I'm not gonna test it, but I'm pretty sure if you put a knife through your eye, you're gonna die.

Because she is a woman and is taking pictures of herself and they're not naked.

    [–]Zotamedu 14ポイント15ポイント  (0子コメント)

I would assume it's because they are neither talented nor pretty.

I think her posts are cool, the only off-putting thing to me is when she says stuff like "oh I whipped this up in 2 days". I sew quite a bit, but a lot of these things are pretty advanced. The implication that it's easy is the only thing that bugs me.

ETA: I actually just realized that this is a symptom of imposter syndrome and one that I'm guilty of myself. So I should cut her a break, because I probably also make others around me feel like this when I say things like "oh I just threw this analysis together" at work. That's probably why it bugged me to begin with though.

Otherwise, her stuff is great! Really cool presentation, excellent photography, neat ideas.

    [–]transgirlopal [スコア非表示]  (2子コメント)

Isn't it possible that for her it is easy?

    [–]ThatHermioneGranger [スコア非表示]  (1子コメント)

It's not so much if her skill makes it easy, it's the downplaying of her own talent that bugs. Quilting is easy for me, but I don't tell others that it's easy, because they don't have the same existing skill set that I do. If you say it's easy and then others attempt it and they fail, it makes them feel worse about themselves. Again, see my ETA, I think this is just a symptom of imposter syndrome.

I think you answered your own question.
