Honestly, he's earned the right to retire here if that's what he wants. As long as he's willing to accept whatever role the manager has for him, he's been a legend for this club and will go down in the history books once he hangs up his boots. Whatever people might say about him, he has earned that right. His role in the team should he wish to stay is another matter.

Doubt Jose would sell him. Would be up for the challenge of getting him performing. It will be OK tho, cause Jose also won't pin all our goal scoring hopes for the season on Wayne, and if Wayne performs poorly he won't start every game.

Louis picked him so consistently when he was playing his absolute worst it drew a lot of hate towards Wayne, given proper competition for places the pressure won't be as much. Some of his best performances came when he wasn't the main man in attack.

That's actually a really good point. I don't think Mourinho would have selected him at all considering his form at the time. (Eg John Terry in title winning year vs this year) Additionally, there is an extended argument to say this would have made him train harder and perhaps regain form quicker.

250k ffs every single time. But yes there is a serious issue here, going forward do we keep Rooney.

Honestly, who would take him?

Would he take the wage cut in order to get more first team football at a smaller club?

Would he even be willing to play less minutes and be more of a "backroom leader" with us?

Personally I would say unless he is happy with becoming a bit part player here sell him, as it allows us to make room for younger, potentially better players .

China will take him. Depends on him though.

It would be a good deal for all if we sold him to some Chinese club but like you said, it's all up to him.

Its 250+50 in personal endorsements and commercial rights.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/26287482

The new deal involves a basic wage of £250,000 a week, but with commercial rights making it more lucrative for the player, up to £300,000.

We don't pay him any additional money. If Rooney left he'd still make endorsements. Why is Wayne Rooney the only player on the planet whose salary in relation the club is talked about with his endorsements?

Because his deal was one of the first of its kind. He actually wouldn't make the same amount of these endorsements. The endorsements are connected to the club but not directly from the club. Hence, the common confusion about his salary.

I imagine its because the endorsements are specifically part of his contract that its set he takes a certain amount of the endorsments that come to the club because of / that include him.

Yes he gets will allways have endorsements but I always thought this was more about him getting a share in club endorsements rather than his own personal ones.

The telegraph did a great write up about it at the time.

I'm pretty sure it was more along the lines of the clubs commercial department will work for him (and most of our major signings signings from now on) to help him increase his reach, thereby increasing the amount he makes on endorsements. But that's at no cost to the club.

Also fuck everyone that downvoted this. This guy has put forth is thoughts and even expanded on it and you guys just downvote and move on. Nice post OP, I think you've started a conversation we should be having about Rooney.

Of course we keep him. He's our best attacking player along with Mata and Martial, an experienced head, our captain, England's best player and I'm convinced he can still score double figures in the league each season despite a poor 2015.

Sell him to who though? I doubt any club in England or even Europe would be willing to keep his wages that high, perhaps 5 years ago but not now.

If he were to be sold it would have to be willingly but as far as i can see wherever he went would involve negatives from his point of view.

Everton is the one that springs to mind.

Just had investment so the wages wouldnt be an issue, I imagine with his age he would end up taking a cut in exchange for more commercial rights again and he loves the club.

Those wages are out of the question for a club like Everton regardless of the recent investment. The commercial rights while playing for Everton would also be worth peanuts compared to at United.

And despite it being his boyhood club, I imagine Rooney is not quite ready yet to go to a lesser club. I think he will want to stay until he is dropped while fit.

Also there's no real leader without him.

Wages are ridiculous yes, however at certain times this year he has carried the team and with a lack of experienced players he will probably be needed next season more than ever to lead.

Personally I would keep him.

I'd still want to make some reinforcements to our striking options but other than him and Carrick, there aren't many players who have made over 150 appearances for the club.

His role as captain has actually been impressive and having him around the club for another year or so does have its benefits.

None of those players are good number tens, I would sell Mata. We really need a new number ten. Anyway, I would definitely keep Rooney for a season or two. Experience, leadership and quality (form this year) means that he'll be good for at least next season. Also, I would like to see how he works with Mourinho. So yes, indispensable for two seasons for me. Don't care about how much he's on. Never did.

I think he'll see out he's contract, I'd like him to retire here tbh but can see him taking an MLS deal once he's contract is up here.

I think he'll do well with Mou.

Even if you can argue that we should sell him (reasons include: high wages, poor form in 2015, decline in ability), I don't think we will.

He remains one of our most marketable players, he's still the England captain, and he's close to becoming top scorer for United. I suspect we will hold onto him for a couple of seasons more and then ease him out, once we're in a slightly stronger position with regards to players.

Of course, a lot will depend on who is managing the team next season.

He's earned the right to retire here. Some competition could be good amongst our strikersm Ibra along with martial and Rooney could give us good options for rotation. I think Rooney has the makings of a good Mourinho 10

I can see Rooney retiring at United unless we're offered some stupid sum from a Chinese club.

Also, we pay him £250k.

If good offer arrive from China, I would sell him. He's not going to be better and tbh He is not good enough for 3 years now - I know, nobody is good enough for 3 years, but I expected Rooney would be a leader to make other better around him.
