Local lad Marcus Rashford is the hero as his brilliantly-taken goal wins the Manchester derby for United against City.

The Tyne-Wear derby ended all squad, while there were wins for Southampton and Tottenham too.

A great way to end the club football action, with the international break next week. Until then.

A bit more from Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino: "Harry Kane is one of the best strikers in the world.

"We have hit a different period, from the beginning of the season. After the international break we will have one game every week and we will have time to prepare training and improve to do a lot of things which were impossible to do before.

"The gap that Leicester have over us and Arsenal and Manchester City, we need to reduce. They have a good advantage but we need to believe."

Does Pep Guardiola know what he's got himself into?

Manchester City have lost as many home Premier League games this season, as they had in their previous four seasons combined (5).

Getting their form sorted at the Etihad Stadium will be high on the Spaniard's agenda.

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal: "We played a very good first-half with a goal and also had more chances and we didn't receive a lot of chances against us.

"In the second-half we had to start again, we started well but after that we had to fight till the end because we were tired from playing on Thursday.They played on Tuesday so that is two days more rest which is important.

"I am a very proud manager today.

"This victory was necessary the gap was four points and now is one point, plus we are equal with West Ham which is important, what is possible? I can not say.

"We do not have Thursday matches now and that is a positive thing.

"Rashford is very quick and Demichelis looked like the years are catching up with him. He was a very good defender, he was my centre-back in Bayern but that is the life of football.

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino: "It was a good day at the office. One week ago in Germany we had a bad day but we were good from the beginning today and I'm very happy with the collective performance. 

"It was very important to score early in the game, then we had to show a strong mentality to manage the game. We created a lot of chances and it was very important to win 3-0 and get a clean sheet. Today was one of the best performances of the season.

"The international break has not come at a bad time. It gives us time to relax and analyse. Ninety percent of the squad is with the national team. We have seven games ahead and when the players come back from the national teams, we hope it is with a good spirit." 

Tottenham goalscorer Harry Kane: "We wanted to come out the blocks flying and there's no better way to do that than get an early goal. We grew into the game and got better and better. It was a solid 3-0 victory. 

"We scored early which helped but I think we are a calm team anyway, that's the way we always play press high and keep the ball. At half-time we said we didn't want to take our foot off the pedal and the early goal in the second half helped with that. 

"I'd rather have the five-point lead but with Leicester usually playing first we know what we have to do and there's still a lot of points up for grabs. The international break has not come at a good time, we would like to carry on playing, but it might give us a breather [from the league] and focus on it when we get back to get as many points as we can." 

Manuel Pellegrini refused to comment on the title race.

He said: "We did not deserve to lose, we dominated the game from the first minute we were the only team who wanted to play the whole game but we missed three or four chance to score.

"Every player has bad days, Demichelis was nervous, it was not good for him to continue.We didn’t score goals but that is not his fault.

"We will see about Joe Hart and know in the next two or three days how long he will be out for."

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal says he is a "very happy" man and calls Marcus Rashford "a real striker."

Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe: "We weren't great today, we were well off it in the first half. Second half we had a right go and the third goal killed the game.

"We knew they were a good side but with and without ball we were poor. It’s a good lesson because they are a top-class side and it shows we have some way to go."

Tottenham's comfortable 3-0 win against Bournemouth means things are looking a little tighter at the top.

Meanwhile, Manchester City's derby defeat means they will be looking nervously over their shoulders.

Chris Smalling talking to Sky Sport: "It is so refreshing to see a young kid like Marcus run at defenders, I know if I was up against him I would find it difficult.

"It was difficult for me today as I got an early booking and I had to be more careful and a couple of times pull out of tackles but I managed it."

Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini is a tetchy man in the post-match interview. Says goakeeper Joe Hart has a calf injury.

Michael Carrick talking to Sky Sports: "It was a good first half, a great goal from Marcus, an  unbelievable finish.

"It has been a tough week. there were bodies cramping out there.

"It was a great result and a good way to bounce back from Thursday night. It is more than three points, as it was a must win today.

"It gives us a real boost, something to go at and momentum for the final stages of the season."

Manchester United Michael Carrick calls it "more than three points" in the post-match interview.

The United players go over to their fans to acknowledge the applause. They are loving it and so is boss Louis van Gaal who congratulates each player as they make their way off the pitch.

And that's it. Marcus Rashford's early goal settles the Manchester derby and it's United who take home the three points.

Sergio Aguero tries to do it all himself, wriggling in and out but Chris Smalling gets the ball away. One more chance for City?

Wilfried Bony is not the brightest of characters. Trips united defender Chris Smalling in the box with City on the attack.

...but United clear the free-kick.

"COME ON" shouts a City fan behind the commentary box.

There is the chance City have been begging for.

David Silva with a glorious ball to Sergio Aguero at the back post, who cuts inside of Antonio Valencia and with the whole goal to aim at, screws his effort wide of goal.

City fans and supporters frustrated. United fans in full voice.

Fernandinho leaps highest to meet Jesus Navas's corner but heads it wide of goal. Time running out for City.

United unable to make the most of the free-kick and City break clear to get a corner. Their 10th of the game...

Marcus Rashford is down for United but the visitors carry on.

I'd say there will be around seven minutes added on after Joe Hart's injury.

Full of tricks, Anthony Martial skins fellow Frenchman Bacary Sagna and goes down in the box but Michael Oliver says no penalty.

United full-back Matteo Darmian really struggling with cramp and he trudges off.

City on the front foot, their play has deserved a goal today, but can they get it?

United happy to sit back which only invites more and more pressure.

Into the last 10 minutes...

City striker Wilfried Bony gets the ball into his feet on the edge of the box and his attempted flick comes off his other foot.

Embarrassing for the Ivorian.

Second yellow for Chris Smalling???

Ooh, he's a lucky, lucky boy. It's a clear yellow for tripping Sergio Aguero on the turn but Michael Oliver gives just a free-kick.

From there, Fernandinho heads over the bar and United get away again.

Next challenge from Smalling and he's off for an early bath.

In a game with more of a bearing on the title race (who would have thought we'd be saying that at the start of the season?), Tottenham are 3-0 up and cruising against Bournemouth, Christian Eriksen's goal adding to Harry Kane's first-half double.

David Silva picks out Sergio Aguero at the back post with a pin-point ball. The Argentine heads across the box to Yaya Toure, who cuts it back to Wilfried Bony but blocked on the line.

United under severe pressure and having to work extremely hard to get the ball away.

The calming influence of Bastian Schweinsteiger is being sent on by Louis van Gaal.

Smart play from Manchester United with some nice flicks in the middle of the park. Antonio Valencia buys a corner, but Daley Blind's ball is poor and Manchester City clear.

City getting closer and closer.

It's Yaya Toure who works had to chase down a ball into the channel.

He whips a lovely ball into the near post to Sergio Aguero, whose header cannons back off the post.

David de Gea was beaten. United get away with one.

Brilliant defending from Chris Smalling.

City work the ball on the right and Wilfried Bony is first to get on the end of Bacary Sagna's cross, but the Englishman throws his body in the way to stop the shot.

Antonio Valencia on for Marcos Rojo.

That means Matteo Darmian shifts to left-back and Valencia plays on the right.

Patient play from City though, happy to pass the ball around and work an opening. United have good shape in defence though and eventually Wilfried Bony's shot is cleared away.
