I think Reddit is simply trying to protect a subreddit from being taken down if a company starts to complain or sue. As much as we would like to, Reddit as corporate entity isn't exactly in a position to go to court with large corporations for a bunch of disgruntled users.

Is there any company out there that would invite the wrath of millions of redditors? Remember when office depot tried to get some old pictures on some old posts removed. I think reddit wouldn't and should't just bend over for a company especially when it is fair use. Impersonation is already against reddit rules

I think we can both agree with that. I also think both we and Reddit corporate knows that it's not very likely. Still, Reddit is not exactly immortal, it's a private company with shareholders and advertising revenue. If push comes to shove they have to think about their investments, not freedom of speech. Not to mention that a large multinational company couldn't care less about a bunch of Redditors making a stink on the internet, because after a week we'll be back buying their products.

Keeping from being sued doesn't really seem like oppression. Do you, as a user of this complete free platform, believe you have rights to use it as you wish?

Parody and protest are both fair-use, and are more consistent with reddit culture than inviting corporate presence.

When a speaker is given a free platform by a private organization they cannot reasonably complain when the organization restricts the speakers use in order to keep the organization from being sued.

I cannot use reddit to liable someone and then complain about oppression. Similarly, it is not oppression to restrict the use a companies trademarks for pro or negative commentary.

In fact, Reddit can restrict speech on its platform in anyway it wishes and still it wouldn't be oppression.

But the name does belong to the companies. That's the same as if I started a YouTube channel called Marvel to break down new movies and then complained about corruption when Marvel inevitably bitches that I misrepresent them.

Seems like a prudent step to take to protect both Reddit and mods.

People should start consistently registering "XXX_sucks" as subreddits, as has happened with domain names.
