Is it unprofessional the way the club has reportedly gone behind LVG's back to get Jose rather than just sacking him and replacing him? (self.reddevils)

I think the only reasons were that Woodward was reluctant, Mourinho didn't want to join immediately and, there was trouble finding an interim. All that combined made this the only way perhaps. Not that it's a good thing but just, it made it hard to change.

I agree, just wonder has keeping Louis this long done more damage than appointing Giggs or Nicky, or anyone as an interim.

The morale situation with a dead squib coach and uncertainty over next year can't be a good thing.

It very well could have more damage but if there wasn't any viable interim option available, then really though, what else could be done? Hire some unknown for the role for 4-6 whatever months back then? Doesn't sound sensible or even like a good decision.

It's easy to say he should've been let go but if there were no available options, then it's really forced that they didn't perhaps. As in, if giggs didn't want an interim role again and Butt felt he wasn't suitable.

There's no way LVG doesn't know Jose was approached by the club. He is a smart man, he knows that he couldn't deliver what was expected of him.

I imagine him saying to themedia "You've been saying for 4 months that I amj going to be sacked" and that is proof the club are going to let him take an "early retirement" instead of being sacked.

I see it as a few ways:

He's being defiant to the media because that's the stance he has to take, whether or not he's been informed. Why? Say otherwise and his words and anything becomes irrelevant in a season where he is STILL manager after all. It also quashes the rumours for that day in the press conference, even if he has to do it again next week etc. It ends the conversation.

He really feels his job is safe as he was assured by Woodward maybe and so, believes what he says as much more likely than not. Woodward is actually getting people to do it on his behalf and it's behind LVG's back in a way.

He's not being considered for replacement at all and so, portrays that stance.

Those are 3 of the main things I see it as but no matter what combination even, he will always be defiant in the media as he hates the way they do things and it's part of his job to deflect from it too and make it convincing.

I haven't seen anything recently of him repeating that so maybe he now knows and hasn't repeated is since.

LVG knows he's not going to miraculously turn this around by the end of next season. He also doesn't want to end his career being sacked. The agreement will already have been discussed, he'll step down "of his own accord" at the end of this season, and Jose will take the helm.

This is why the club is a PR disaster. For months there has been nothing but uncertainty and doubt (and shit football matches) with a lot of rumours and speculation about LVG being sacked and Jose/Giggs taking over. The club could have said something, anything! Better than not saying anything at all and looking like fools. Even around Christmas it would have made sense for a change with half the season left. Opposition fans have stopped singing "you're getting sacked in the morning", that's how long the nonsense has carried on for.
