Chelsea 2-3 Manchester United: two goals a dangerous lead, two men a significant advantage
Manchester United snatched the three points after Chelsea went down to nine men at 2-2.
Roberto Di Matteo was again without John Terry through suspension, while Frank Lampard was injured, so Chelsea’s starting XI was as expected.
Sir Alex Ferguson returned to more of a traditional Manchester United system after recent experimentations with a diamond. Ashley Young was the biggest surprise on the teamsheet, deployed out on the left.
Manchester United went ahead on the counter as Chelsea dominated the first half, before the away side’s numerical supremacy led to dominance of the final 25 minutes.
United go ahead
Manchester United took the lead before the game had settled down and playing styles could be fully assessed, so Chelsea had to take the initiative, and they dominated possession significantly throughout the first half. United’s formation was about width rather than dominance of the centre, so they were happy to soak up pressure before breaking down the flanks.
The right was always going to be a fertile breeding ground, as Eden Hazard’s defensive awareness is highly questionable, and Antonio Valencia has got the beating of Ashley Cole a few times over the years. United’s second goal, where Rafael broke past Hazard, created a two-versus-one against Cole and allowed Valencia to cross, was a perfect example of Chelsea’s problem in that zone.
Chelsea dominance
Chelsea dominated possession in the first half, primarily because they needed to get back into the game rather than due to any specific tactical battle. Despite their treble creative threat behind Fernando Torres, they struggled to make significant chances in open play, partly because they had trouble working the ball into the zone between the lines. Here, United deserve credit for staying tight in front of the defence, but for the first time this season Chelsea lacked quality passing from central midfield, and were slow at playing the initial forward pass into the final third. The passing graphic shows it well – Chelsea had more of the ball but struggled to work it towards the area, while United played down the flanks:
Still, the home side continued to increase the pressure. It was interesting to see United’s shape without the ball, effectively 4-1-4-1. Michael Carrick stayed in holding role, Tom Cleverley picked up Ramires, while Wayne Rooney moved goalside of Jon Obi Mikel. When he’s picked up the Nigerian in recent seasons, with Chelsea in a 4-3-3, it simply made United look like 4-4-1-1. Now Chelsea are using a 4-2-3-1, Rooney had to drop deeper alongside Cleverley, and was less able to support United’s main striker, Robin van Persie. Rooney is capable of playing in midfield but together with Cleverley formed a fairly flimsy midfield combination, and a Rooney foul conceded the free-kick that Juan Mata curled in for Chelsea’s first goal.
It was obvious how much Rooney played than in this fixture last season:
Momentum
The pattern of the game reacted significantly to the flow of goals. Just as Manchester United sat back at 2-0 up (or Chelsea dominated because they needed to come into the game, to look at it from the other perspective), Chelsea’s 35-minute period of dominance came to an end as soon as it got to 2-2.
Why? They would have been better off keeping the tempo of the game high and continuing to pin United back, but they switched off and sit deeper, and in the 10-minute spell between Ramires’ equaliser and Branislav Ivanovic’s red card, the game was more evenly-balanced than at any time since the 4th minute opener.
10 v 11
Ivanovic’s dismissal was a game-changing moment, immediately handing United the advantage. A common ZM complaint is that managers often don’t change their own side when the opposition go down to ten (despite the situation in the game changing, and the opposition likely to be weak in a different manner) so great credit should go to Ferguson for immediately introducing Javier Hernandez (for Cleverley when the game was 10 v 11). That meant United used five attacking players – they were always likely to dominate with an extra player, but Hernandez provided an extra goal threat and robbed Chelsea of a spare man at the back.
Di Matteo naturally wanted to replace his right-back, so brought on Cesar Azpilicueta for Oscar, changing Chelsea to a simple 4-4-1 formation.
9 v 11
But then, almost immediately, Torres was dismissed. Having planned to bring on Daniel Sturridge, Di Matteo instead went for Ryan Bertrand in place of Mata, with Hazard going across to the right. Chelsea were now two banks of four, and two banks of four alone – Di Matteo was understandably playing for a draw.
Then came Hernandez’s winner. Sturridge replacedHazard – maybe the Belgian was tired, but Di Matteo could have afforded to keep two attacking players on the pitch when needing a goal. It was always going to be extremely difficult for eight outfielders to win the ball against ten outfield opponents happy to keep possession, however, and Hernandez’s goal seemed like the winner as soon as it went in.
Conclusion
A slightly disappointing tactical battle, despite an exciting game on the whole. Ferguson’s formation was more basic than the ‘revolutionary’ (his words) diamond he used against Newcastle, for example, and therefore the game had a familiar pattern. Rooney dropping onto Mikel, combined with Chelsea’s dominance of the ball, meant United’s shape frequently looked like 4-1-4-1. With the same instructions and a different type of game, however, it would have been more like 4-4-2, with Rooney joining van Persie.
10 versus 11 would have been an interesting match considering Chelsea had been dominating possession for much of the game, but 9 versus 11 made the game very one-sided.

Chelsea showed great determination to come back into the game. United were pushed deep like a Championship side after they went up 0-2 and couldn’t cope with Chelsea’s relentless attack. I can accept the dubious referee decisions leading to the two red cards, but the offside goal was too much to swallow. The Blues didn’t deserve to lose the game, not after that supreme comeback.
The dubious refereeing decisions only led to one red card not both. No arguing with Ivanovic’s. And as ZM said, Chelsea’s tempo slowed right down after they equalised and the game was even for those 10 minutes. It’s a shame we’re left wondering what might have been but for poor decisions, but credit to Fergie for reacting best to the game’s changes.
Exactly.
Bleh. United were not set up to dominate possession. Their plan was to sit back and crowd the area where Oscar, Mata, Hazard and Torres try to link up (and make it harder for them as they are still unfamiliar with one another), and attack Chelsea’s flanks on the counter, especially the left one, because of their vulnerability there (Hazard’s lack of defensive discipline is well-known). If United wanted to control the tempo, they would have gone for the narrow diamond and would not have played two flying wingers. Full credit to Chelsea though for they way they came back.
Then Utd got their tactics wrong. After scoring twice they couldn’t cope with Chelsea’s attack, were dominated heavily and lost the 2 goal advantage.
‘Then Utd got their tactics wrong.’: Oh, C’mon. Chelsea are a ‘decent’ team and they have a ‘decent’ player in Mata. No matter how well Ferguson sets his team up tactically, you would expect the Blues to provide ’some’ resistance, don’t ya?
Of course, and I’m very happy they did!
You don’t know what you are doing. Get a day job.
This *is* my day job but thanks all the same!
Or were you talking to Clattenburg?
I think I speak for the rest of the people reading Zonal Marking when I say thank you for your insights and excellent articles on football tactics. Were it not for you, I wouldn’t have become interested in the tactical side of the game.
Ignore the trolls.
Cheers, very kind
Great article, as always. But you should also think about writing such articles for ESPNFC.
Agree with this completely. Thanks ZM.
I’m a junior and youth football coach, and while I see the game a little differently (because of the age I coach) I think this is a great site and very interesting. I learn a great deal from your articles. Ignore that idiot.
+1
While Manchester united dominated the first 30 mins. Chelsea dominated the next 25 and then there were 10 evenly balanced minutes (as correctly pointed out). So people saying Chelsea were the better team of the two is surprising. Chelsea had more of the ball agreed but they couldn’t make use of them and scored only courtesy a brilliant free kick, not by dominating posession.
I was worried about Ashley Young’s role, he often cuts in and was often changing positions with Cleverly who then had to help evra out. The fact that Hazard and Oscar didn’t switch positions much was surprising. They could have gone for a kill against Evra who strangely had a brilliant game. RvP’s holding up and linking was absolute treat to watch and they way he rounded off Cahill to sent that through ball to young was class.
Micheal, one question. There was a situation where Valencia tried to pass to RvP but since he was at offside position he let the ball go through his legs and didn’t interfere with the play and Valencia took over. Why was that given an offside?
Probably as the linesman put his flag up thinking RVP was going to get it, then the referee blew too quickly. Should have been left, I suppose (although when a movement towards the ball like that from an offside player distracts the defenders, personally I think it should be offside…)
I remember a goal Barcelona scored against Atletico Madrid last season (they won 5-0) when Messi was in offside position right in front of the goal and allowed the ball to go through his legs. The goal was given and he wasn’t considered interfering with play. Offside or no offside?
I haven’t seen that goal, but the question would (I think) be whether his dummy affected the defending team’s ability to prevent the goal.
It surely affected the Goalkeeper
technically it was an offside and you cant say RVP wasn’t interfering with play because the ball went through RVP’s legs and that makes it a dummy.
The fact that SAF replaced Rooney with Giggs so quickly after his caution, also shows that SAF is not risking MU down to 10-men as well, and opt for full force attack.
Chelsea clearly missed Terry and I do not see how Luiz is capable of replacing the captain. Would be a challenge for RDM now that Ivanovic will be suspended.
Yeah good shout on that Ferguson sub, forgot to include that
I’m happy for Azpilicueta to get a game, he’s quite good.
Also, I’d have to disagree with you regarding Luiz – I think he’s going to be a great CB and that Chelsea would be best off playing him with Ivanovic in the middle of defense and Azpilicueta on the right, with Bertrand eventually replacing Cole on the left.
Ferguson said in an interview he was making the change before the sending off, do some research. I like how 30 minutes of United playing like Barcelona was tactically uninteresting so lets focus on Chelsea pumping the box from corners. You also missed the most important tactical feature of the game which was Uniteds inability to play the ball out from the box under pressure, which I think was a combination of bottling it under pressure, trying too much to try and play on the counterattack instead of lowering the tempo of the game and RVP dropping all the way back when United defended, meaning there was often no out ball whatsoever. Also De Gea seemed reluctant to go short but his long kicking didn’t stick.
“I like how 30 minutes of United playing like Barcelona was tactically uninteresting so lets focus on Chelsea pumping the box from corners.”
Playing like Barcelona? Chelsea pumping the box from corners? What is this?
Chelsea’s greatest period of pressure came from a succession of corners where United couldn’t clear their lines well, and for the first 30 minutes United were absolutely brutalising Chelsea but this is dismissed in one line of your summary. You forgot to mention the part where your praise of Ferguson’s substitution is exposed as stupid.
“for the first 30 minutes United were absolutely brutalising Chelsea” – When Chelsea were outpassing United? Is that “playing like Barcelona”, really?
Sorry, I didn’t see Ferguson’s comments on the substitution – if he was going to make the sub anyway, fair enough. Either way, it worked well.
Yeah Chelsea were outpassing United in the first 30 minutes, it was lucky they were able to overcome such a passing deficit. The two goal surfeit probably helped like. You took me too literally: playing like Barcelona as in playing well was what I meant, not playing 3 at the back and passing sideways. Yeah Ferguson said after the match that he was making that substitution before the sending off, but lots of other pundits missed it too, and since most of you just copy-paste eachother without watching the match/interviews he’s now a brilliant 11vs10 tactician, which must be nice for him.
antiphysicist why dont you shut the fuck up, be more specific in what youre saying and stop getting pissy and emotional for unclear and convoluted reasons.
United weren’t playing like Barcelona at any point in this game, if anything they were playing like Real Madrid in the first ten, with their direct counter attacking. So sit quietly and start watching football more closely before you subject me to more bile and shit in this good comments area. thanks
@antiphysicist I’m a United fan but we weren’t brutalizing Chelsea. In the first 30 minutes we exposed their weakness down the flanks as ZM pointed out, and we defended compactly. We sat very deep at 2-0.
Also Chelsea were creating plenty of shots from open play and free kicks. Mata had 3 great chances, Torres was denied an almost certain goal. Luiz’s free kick was well saved.
Usually when you use “playing like Barcelona” it means that the team dominated possession and passing. Chelsea completed more passes and had more of the ball when it was 11 v. 11. Any team that’s down 2 players would go for damage limitation so even for the last 25 minutes, you can’t say United “played like Barcelona” during that spell.
Quick question, how old are you?ZM doesn’t have the time to reply to many comments and it’s a shame that he comes across so ignorant ones as yours.Friendly advice, your knowledge of tactics is limited, watch more matches and read from journalists like this one before expressing an opinion.
Very surprised with the inclusion of Young into the team, i really expected Welbeck to start, but for the 2nd consecutive time in this particular fixture, Young (returning from injury both times) gets put it on the left, surprised as i was i thought he had a decent game and his change of pace is effective at pushing back this Chelsea defence, not only that, but also his variation of movement (as seen at the beginning of last season in particular) can cause real havoc, im happy for the guy, good game.
Concerned with however the midfield (surprise surprise), the same thing has been said about this midfield (particularly Carrick) for the previous 5 years “When pressured and hurried he struggles or loses the ball”, not only him, Cleverley too, but Clev needs a full season i believe, and not many teams are able to compete with Ramires are they? Makes me wonder why o why didnt Anderson start? or atleast why has he not been favoured recently? His physicality (hes very strong) could have helped in this match.
RVP, what a player, touch, technique, movement, hes a joy to watch, what a signing, he must really be loving his time here so far.
Last point, Valencia, pace to burn, can beat so many defenders but, when he just thumps the ball into the box its so annoying, but yesterday when he actually looked up (!) he just slightly wasn’t so wasteful, he must improve his productivity, in my eyes i think his crossing was much much better in his first season for United.
I never really understand what’s going on with Anderson – but agreed, this would have been a good game to use him
Yeah, his status in this squad baffles me. Didn’t they have a good stretch with him and Cleverly in the middle before Cleverly got injured? they both came back and yet that combo hasn’t seemed to get much time since then.
Last season Anderson and Clevs started together brilliantly, with great quick passing and forward thinking football, Cleverley had many plaudits particularly from United fans, but it was Anderson who really pulled the strings during their partnership, he was outstanding.
“RVP, what a player, touch, technique, movement, hes a joy to watch, what a signing, he must really be loving his time here so far.”
Karma dictates that he will suffer some horrendous and low-probability injury in next week’s game, like perhaps his crystalline structure shattering entirely after a collision with Mannone and leaving him in a puddle of shards after scoring a fantastic goal.
I think Anderson is getting left out because he’s a bit too likely to charge forward and leave the defence exposed. Since Cleverly is clearly the man to do this in United’s midfield maybe Ferguson finds that the midfield becomes too bare when they play together.
It seems that Fergie readily accepted his central midfield is lacking and was happy to cede this area in favour of wingers being able to get a goal on the break. In this match and against Liverpool away (United’s toughest two matches this season) they’ve not even seemed to contest the middle. Having said that, both of these have been away at grounds where United have had pretty terrible records (by their standards) in recent years, so it is understandable that he’d play on the break against them rather than trying to dominate.
I think it will be interesting to see what he does against Arsenal next weekend. It’s unlikely he’d like to play on the break so much at home, but given Arsenal’s strength in the middle (Carzorla) and weakness at full back, you’d think it’d be worth a shout.
Any thoughts?
Come on United!!!!!!
I think he’ll attack down the right again. Santos would be a liability if Gibbs isn’t back, and Podolski doesn’t defend well either
and they’ve killed Arsenal on the break in some of their recent matches, so it’d be no surprise if that was their strategy again.
Podolski doesn’t defend well? I am surprised to read this.. although I have only watched 2 Arsenal matches in full, in the one against Liverpool i think he defended so well.
Mind elaborating?
I agree with ZM. Podolski defends like a forward– thinking that pressure and closing the opponent down most of the time his team loses possession constitutes defending, when positioning and concentration are more important to preventing goals. Running around like Tevez can be impressive and effective at times, but for a wide midfielder in a 4-4-1-1 system positioning is more important. The German isn’t a layabout, but it doesn’t come naturally.
Indeed, positioning and focus are Andre Santos’ weaknesses as well, Podolski and the Brazilian combined on the same wing are surely susceptible to intelligent FB bursts forward. Valencia and Rafeal will surely find plenty of space several times.
Ignoring the last part of the game, where the sending off’s obviously changed the game in united’s favour, I though Chelsea did well to get back into the game.
I thought the key player was mikel. At first he was to blame for United taking an early 2-0 lead. With Cole being overloaded on the left flank, Luiz was constantly moving over to help out that flank. But Mikel failed to drop back and help cover the CB position, which left gaping holes in the defence that United easily exploited. But when Chelsea started to dominate more (with United sitting back), Mikel and Ramires managed to press the united midfield back and cause a lot of problems for their defence. This was where United’s midfield looked flimsy and why they have experimented with a diamond recently. Carrick did a solid job, but Cleverley and Rooney were bypassed far too easily, United needed a more solid pairing for this game.
A draw would have probably been a fair result with both sides exploiting each overs weaknesses. United could have done with an Anderson or Fletcher in todays game, while Mikel did well to press United midfield but didn’t cover his team mates enough when under pressure.
I wrote an article on Nigeria’s economy, if anyone is interested just click on the link, otherwise ignore http://ibej.blogspot.co.uk/2012/10/can-nigeria-become-next-leaders-of_7920.html
As a United fan I was delighted to pick up the 3 points, though I am more than happy to admit lady luck did her part for the team.
Clattenburg has understandably created the headlines, which is a shame as I think we would have more than been capable of winning when it was 11v10. We certainly would have been in the ascendency at this stage. The Torres decision was wrong, but that was all he got wrong IMO. Ivanovic was a red and the offside goal was the fault of the linesman. You could argue Torres was lucky to be on the pitch anyway, his kung fu style kick on Cleverley was hugely dangerous.
The issue I have with the team is the lack of a high class defensive midfielder. It’s clear Carrick is not suitable for the job, and against teams that play good attacking football we are very vulnerable. The trouble is, what player is there to do that role, that is realistically available?
I generally agree about Carrick but thought he did OK here, more through positioning than tackling
Ferguson clearly knew what he was doing tactically. Playing with just two midfielders against the midfield attacking trio of Chelsea was always a dangerous move. It could have led to the same debacle they faced against Tottenham’s midfield. While Cleverly may have looked very lackluster going forward, I would say he did his defensive job of covering the ‘hole’ with Carrick very nicely.
If the match had been a 11 vs 11 affair, the result could have been much different. There was a good indication of a Chelsea fightback given the way they were controlling the possession.
On the other hand a deep lying midfield coould have held on well enough to catch Chelsea by surprise on the break down the flanks.

Cox, I would like to get your thoughts on Valencia. I was paying attention to him in recent games and it seems to me that he takes too many touches on the ball and consequently loses it. On the other hand, playing a traditional winger role, he does assist enough to keep us happy. In your opinion, can Valencia be a much better player by getting the ball under control to give us better crosses or maybe he can also try to cut in more often like Nani? Your website is as always an eye opener. Thanks
I think he offers a different option to Nani, which is why I think he’s useful to United. In games like this against Cole he’s perfect – he can defend and attack well.
I know what you mean about the too many touches thing, but I think his delivery is generally quite good, personally….
ZM i think you are trying to shy away from the fact that the beautiful game was seriously robbed in the mud! face it chelsea intensity was something united wouldn’t witstand and the ref disgraced english football. this is one of the thing i hate about football this match is not tactically worthy to be discussed sorry to say if i were you i wouldn’t write about the match. This match had millions of football lovers watching it only for a stupid ref to make a he-goat out of himself. this is the worst moment to be a football lover
Love football? Then love all the human errors that go with it.
Don’t like the refereeing? Think you can do better? THEN GO DO IT – PUT MONEY WHERE MOUTH IS.

I was disappointed when, after the first sending off, Oscar was substituted for Azpilicueta. Obviously, RDM wanted to restore the back four, but I think he ought to have taken off Torres instead of Oscar.
Chelsea had been dominating midfield, but removing Oscar handed that advantage to United. Removing Torres would have left Man U with 2 centre backs against 0 strikers – potentially wasteful unless SAF reacted. Oscar-Mata-Hazard are all capable of both creating and scoring, without needing a striker. It would have been reminiscent of Spain’s 4-6-0 formation.

So what happened to David Luiz? This is when mental strength is important. The own goal threw him right off and he started sulking. He even came over to the fans in Matthew Harding, still holding the ball and started signing it wasn’t my fault until Cech took him and said get back into the game. Then he was all over the place.

Given that United only played with 2 Cm’s and that Cleverly was positioned slightly higher you would think he would have influenced the game a bit more. Instead he had to come deep too much.

Great job as always Michael… I am a long time lurker and am glad that you provide a site with insightful tactical analysis.
I apologize to bring the discussion on something like this, but I had a hard time understanding why Ivanovic would get a straight red in that situation. Also, why this is something beyond discussion. In my opinion, it is no different than a last defender, facing a fast strike, pulling him, or putting his body on the way. Or in a fast counterattack where it is 3 against 2 for the attackers, fouling one of the players. Without the foul in such situations, the striker might have the sort of tete-a-tete chance that Young had, yet those situations are not generally punished. It seems to me harsh to give reds unless a party makes a sinister act and Iva was not doing that in my opinion.
For the first 30-35 minutes of the game, United defended very well and didn’t allow Chelsea any opportunities in open game, but they appeared exhausted by the end of the first half, and they had the goal coming.
However, I was very impressed with Chelsea’s ability to gain corners. They showed expertise on the flanks, they forced Young into losing many balls and the quasi-own goal originating from a quick throw in was symbolic of how they were good at creating pressure and danger from this area.
I would like your input on the corners from both sides. United has had a good record on offensive corners lately (especially against Newcastle), yet they didn’t manage to create any clear cut chance yesterday. On the other hand, Chelsea were often dangerous in this exercise. I’m sure there’s a tactical reason why they were able to be so dominant other than height.

What do you think about Ashley Young’s positioning. I think he was unusually very central when United had the ball. I think that was the tactic, Valencia staying wide and Young staying more central. He was involved in buildup for 1st goal from central position, made a good run to divert Cahill’s attention and buy some space for Van Persie for the second goal, plus it was his run in central position which got Ivanovic sent off. His passing was fairly poor but i think he did very well tactically with his good runs.

I personally think Carrick receives more flak for attributes of a midfielder like aggression, ball winning, tackling etc etc… But you were spot on about highliting his excellent positioning…. If not for his positional awareness the attacking midfield triumvirate of chelsea could possibly have demolished united; It is because of Carrick that many throughballs into more attacking positions can’t be made and the opposition players have to play a less attacking pass… Problem is this easily goes unnoticed as Carrick is a passive entity in these small skirmishes…. And also he is still the best midfielder in United’s squad.

“You took me too literally” – sorry, it was a slightly odd way of putting it if you weren’t referring to playing style, which was the natural way to infer iy
I mentioned United’s dominance down the right and the Valencia-Rafael combination – that, in my opinion, was why United did well and why they went ahead. I don’t think they were playing particularly well aside from that, though.
I’m not really a pundit, and I didn’t copy/paste anyone. I missed the interview as I had a deadline, and forgot to record it to watch it back. Apologies for that, dunno why it’s annoyed you quite so much though
Ignore this miscreant ZM, you do a bang-up job. You shouldn’t really give aggressive dissentors the time of day, anybody who thinks not being able to clear the ball is a tactical feature of play isn’t really worth your time of day. Keep up the good work!
thanks!
I guess, in a sense it could be a tactical feature – for example, Barca are great at closing down their opponents, which makes it difficult to clear your lines properly; I didn’t see a lot of Rayo v Barca, but that’s one thing I definitely noticed from that game. Not that I agree with Mr. Antiphysicist – anyway, I’m sure ZM would have noticed that if it was a factor in this game.
Agree with you though, SDBT – you do great work, Michael, and we love you for it.
ZM are you going to report this idiot to the police? Isn’t it illegal to say such things even as a hoax?
