Everyone will say one of the three you've mentioned.

De Gea, only one.

It's not even a question--David De Gea.

Martial has been a very pleasant surprise, but we would've expected something along that level of performance given the money we spent on him. He has a very bright future though.

Smalling has been the other pleasant surprise, but he is in DESPERATE need of a competent, consistent CB pairing with whom he can develop a rapport and thrive. Blind, Rojo, Jones, and whoever else we've been forced to stick back there this season are not permanent solutions. We need a Laporte, Varane, Marquinhos, etc. and I think we'll see Smalling get even better

So, back to De Gea. The quality of saves he makes ON A WEEKLY BASIS has almost ceased to amaze us--we just expect that from him at this point, and that's the amazing thing. This scrawny little kid from Atl. Madrid who was afraid to command his box has become undoubtedly one of the top 3 keepers in the world (and you can certainly make a strong case for #1). The amount of points he has saved for us versus if Romero (competent, but not world class) had been in net is unfathomable, and I honestly believe we would be closer to the 8-10 region in the table without him.

Losing De Gea this Summer would be absolutely devastating, but perhaps Mourinho coming in and the whole Mendes connection will have De Gea stay for the foreseeable future. He is 100% the player of the season, and if we want to return to the top of Europe, we need a GK of his quality.

Probably De Gea as the only one who's produced consistently. Most games he's pulled off at least one worldie. Smalling has looked good in parts, but still inconsistent and his positioning/distribution have let him down a lot. Martial unplayable at times, but again not done that all season.

My vote would be for DDG, but my money would probably be on Martial simply because he was a bright spark at a time we desperately needed one - and delivering that debut goal gave us our moment of the season.

No one gonna give a mention of Blind? Played nearly every game this season and has filled in at cb well

Blind against all odds has performed quite well in a position he never played in before. It's not his fault LVG made him play there.

I don't think any player has been a standout really. De Gea, Martial and Smalling have been better than the rest over the season but none have been exceptional. If I was forced to pick, I'd go Smalling. He hasn't been in great form over the last few games but over the course of the season, he has consistently delivered high level performances. Martial has been rather inconsistent and De Gea has continued to make class saves but also let in far more soft goals than he did last season.

My one concern about Smalling is that...how many of those defensive performances benefitted greatly from the negative ultra-defensive mindset LVG promoted early in the season? At times, we had four defenders, two CDMs and even the wingers back helping out with defence, which made everyone look better and solid. But then when we promote attacking football, our defence goes to **** and looks panicked. Not saying Smalling in particular suffers from that, but that he might look better because a defensive player will always look better to when everyone is back helping out.

De Gea, without a shadow of a doubt
