One positive dose not outweigh all the negatives.

And it's not his fault though is it that the manager wants him to do something but plays him in the team all the time?

I'm sorry that's just not true. Fellaini has played less minutes than Carrick, schweinsteiger., Schneiderlin and Herrera.

I don't see the link here. I'm just saying that "and his negatives outweigh all of that" isn't his fault when his manager plays him in the team to do something and he does it...

I'm not saying it does or doesn't - just trying to answer a question that I see asked in here multiple times a week.

Fellaini is not used properly. He was a nightmare for others when he was in Everton. He is not a technically gifted player and he should not be our first choice midfielder week in and out. He can be a good sub in the 70th minute when we need someone in the box to head balls in and that's it. He is a squad player and nothing more than that.

I think he helps us win a lot of high balls. Plus he chests down long balls better than most United players on his day. We need a brute of a Central Defender to partner with ol' Mike. Daley Blind is too much of a liability at central defence, despite the brilliant job he has done all season. If we get a proper centre back, Fellaini can be used for his nuisance value in the opposition box as we did in the UCL qualifier away at Club Brugge to take the aggregate to 3-1 on the first leg.

Why does he keep playing him as a CM then?

I think it's more the fact that united 'shouldn't' be playing that style of football

OP makes a good point. I think he's in there because our defence and two holding midfielders have problems playing it out of the back, especially when under pressure. There's been this tendency where our players are too afraid to show for the ball in tight/dangerous areas or it gets passed side to side with no one taking responsibility. Fellaini takes that pressure away by giving them a safe option to lump it, over the top of a high press.

Watching Barcelona against Arsenal it was beautiful to watch them play it out of their own box in dangerous areas then one/two passes and they're through on goal. What's clear to me is that Busquets always provides an option to defenders and Iniesta, Rakitic, sometimes Neymar and Messi, will come deep to carry the ball out of defence. No one does this at United, most of the time it's passed straight back without taking a touch and looking for the next pass. They play with fear and that's our biggest downfall and LVG or the next manager's greatest challenge IMO.

I would say that since 4-2-3-1 isn't working, we should try 4-3-3 with a DM helps with the responsibility to carry the ball out of defence but I think LVG is asking that of both CMs, unsuccessfully. 4-1-4-1 worked so well for us towards the end of last year that I thought we'd turn to for stability.

I still think LVG should be given a chance for one more year because the only way we can move on from this is to actually come out of this mental block, so the player's can prove to themselves that they have the ability to turn things around. A new manager has a placebo effect in that they think the problem is the manager and not within themselves. Of course this can be used as a catalyst for self belief if things go well but what happens when it doesn't? We'll go through this mental slump again, and we'll change managers again.

Here's hoping we can at least end on a high, otherwise the summer is a long time to dwell on this season's failings. It will eat away at them.
