Currently

  • GK - De Gea is amazing, Romero is a very good backup.

  • RB - Darmian doesn't offer enough attacking threat. Varela good enough, needs to improve defending, bulk up.

  • RCB - Smalling is reaching the world class level but we don't have a back up. Jones has a very high potential and hopefully he can stay injury free next season.

  • LCB - Rojo is good but is being used more as a LB because of Shaw's injury. Blind is amazing in terms of reading the game and ball playing but not fast enough.

  • LB - Shaw - fucked! CBJ - beautiful crosses, shown very good signs, hopefully features a lot next season.

  • CDM - Schneiderlin doesn't have the passing range of Carrick, Carrick doesn't have the mobility of Schneiderlin.

  • CM - Fellaini is a decent player when played as a target man but in the midfield he gets overrun, gives away too many fouls. Schweinsteiger is amazing as a CM and a leader but is aging, injury prone and slowing down.

  • CAM - Mata seems to do shit for 9 matches and produce a brilliant performance in 1 match. Very one footed to play in the final four. Herrera is good and a leader but seems to misplace many passes (compared to Mata), draws too many fouls.

  • RW - Lingard is good enough because of his work rate and off the ball movement but needs to improve his finishing (a lot). Januzaj is inconsistent, low on confidence, needs to bulk up.

  • LW - Martial is amazing but needs to work on his long range shooting, seems to miss headers when 1 on 1. Memphis is inconsistent and currently unable to do his thing against proper defences.

  • ST - Rooney is a vocal leader, adds fighting spirit but is aging. We saw he shit he was in the first few months, although when he is on form, he is the only world class player other than De Gea and Schweinsteiger. Rashford is good but not good enough yet. Martial (mentioned above).

I am just throwing names based on rumours and potential. Take it with a grain of salt.

Buy:

  • GK (if De Gea leaves) : Mattia Perin or Lloris

  • RB / RCB : Marquinhos

  • LCB : Laporte

  • CM : Renato Sanches (Sell Fellaini)

  • CAM : James Rodriguez (Sell Mata)

  • RW : Who knows? Bale? Mahrez?

  • ST: This seems tough, but if we are gonna phase out aging Rooney, we shouldn't buy an already aged Ibrahimovic. Martial should play as the striker.

TLDR:

Our squad is shit at the moment. We failed with Moyes, we are failing with LVG and we most likely will fail again because we lack quality in our team. Ed should deliver this summer or else whoever our manager is, be it LVG / Mourinho / Giggs, things will still stay as they are. Because Individual quality decides matches while formation, philosophy are all secondary.

Darmian > Varela

This Varela fad amazes me. He's a liability.

Its hilarious because we pulled of a little coup snapping Darmian up before the bigger clubs were able to get a serious look at him. Varela has been hugely impressive for an academy player breaking through but this obsession is verging on comedic. Darmian would probably walk into almost any PL team right now.

It's because he's energetic, young and tries really hard. I really like Herrera but it's the same reason this sub is obsessed with him.

Neither of those players impress me. I don't understand the love-in for Herrera. He's just not good enough to be an every-game player for this club.

Sorry you think I'm crazy for wanting to play Schneiderlin and Herrera as a CM partnership. Certainly gets us better results than putting Fellaini in the team has this season.

Darmian is 4 years older than Varela. Obviously Darmian is better defensively. I was talking about the offense. For a possession based team, when we play deep in the opponent's half, we need good overlapping runs and crosses at which Varela is better than Darmian.

Varela has stood out, he's not bad going forward, and at the moment creating chances is something we are terrible at so people see him putting lots of effort into it and think thats wonderful. Fine.

Except he gets fucking done time after time defensively. For all the world it's like playing a winger at fullback. To think he's good enough for this level I just don't understand.

Smalling is reaching the world class level.

You can't be serious.

Smalling had a lovely run of form last season, but he's been terrible lately, and overall hasn't been very good this season. His positional sense is weak, and he panics under pressure. And more than that, he's not the type of leader/organizer we need at the back. We were all over the show in the back in both games against Liverpool, and he was responsible for that.

When I think world class CB, I think Vidic, Puyol, Cannavaro, Baresi - Smalling is great but not at that level. Maybe he'll get there at some point.

I'd disagree individual quality decides matches, Leicester and Spurs have a great team mentality, philosophy and formation, and they're doing pretty well?

Leicester have quality players. Especially Kante and Mahrez. It is baffling how they went under the radar. And their team is on a confidence high at the moment.

Let's say when we face athletico madrid who throw 2 rigid rows of defending. We can't break their bus, we can't cross, we can't do shit. That's when individual quality decides a match.

Yeah, but still when I saw Barca vs Athletico, it was amazing how they could stay in such a rigid formation for 90 mins. In my opinion not even a Pulis team will have such rigidity against such opposition if required.

The squad isn't in terrible shape long term, but right now it has too many older players, too many players not yet at full potential, and too many square pegs. Once we have a consistent playstyle we should gel as a team, and our younger players will be better for the playing time. Need 1-3 dynamic additions, but we really aren't that far off.
