On paper we have some really good players and a decent squad. Why has it not gelled? Keeping the same players what would you change? (self.reddevils)

Most managers will try out a system, and it it doesn't work out they will proceed to evaluate the players at hand and try and play a style of football that suits those players.

We have a manager that is forcing a certain system on a group of players that clearly don't suit it. It doesn't help that this particular system is incredibly outdated, and hasn't been used to any significant success by that particular manager since the 90s.

I just can't seem to agree with this idea of the system being outdated. Sure Bayern and Barca play it a bit different, but it's the same system. They just have a lot more quality to execute it. In fact if you watch the Bayern Juve game, you'd notice Bayern ran into the same issues we do when teams sit back. Only difference is they crossed into the box and it was headed well for 2 goals. That is no different from what we do only Fellaini is usually on the receiving end not Muller or Lewandowski.

The Thiago goal was well worked and he took his chance well. We have similar tight space chances but have little quality in our players to convert on such chances.

But I'm sorry, I just can't see how the system is outdated.

The only similarities between our system and Pep's/Barca's system is nullifying the opposition with possession.

We don't press at all when off the ball and we have no one making runs or even trying to get into decent areas most of the time. We rely on Martial getting the ball on the left, cutting into the box and drilling the ball in / taking a shot.

LVG's 4-3-3 was at it's hay-day in the 90s, since then it hasn't had much success at all. He won the BuLi with Bayern and reached the CL final but that's really as much success as it's had since his first stint at Barca.

I don't think we have many "really good players" to be honest. Martial, De Gea, Scheiderlin, Smalling, Shaw, possibly darmian and depay - apart from that, I think we need new players for every position. New striker, 2 new CMs, new RB, wingers. Long way to go before we have a squad like city, juve, psg etc. Long, LONG way to go before we can match barca Madrid and bayern

I don't agree with first part of your post. But if I could only change the tactics I would position us to be more direct in the final third.

We don't have the quality to breakdown a defence once it has been set up. Evidenced by a) our results and b) all these games with one shot on target. To do that a team either needs creative, technical wizards or very effective finishers.

Need to take more risks focusing more on take the opportunities first time round and looking to create something from each attack.
