Meulensteen: Man United slide 'painful', LVG 'underestimated' culture of club

Rene Meulensteen had a great period under Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United and it was a surprise when David Moyes didn't persuade the Dutchman to stay on. Moyes wanted a fresh start, which saw Meulensteen and others leave, and with it a lot of what may have been described as Ferguson's football legacy.

Manchester United have been playing catch-up since that summer and despite a decent first season, Louis van Gaal's Manchester United appear to have regressed during the current campaign. Van Gaal hasn't dealt particularly well with either pressure from supporters or pressure from the media, and Meulensteen believes the manager went into things too blindly.

Gently pushed into talking about possibly returning to Manchester United, the coach said: "It is painful to see that the club policy slipping so far. It is clear that Louis van Gaal has underestimated the club culture. I have worked at Manchester United for twelve years, I still feel a lot for the club. So the answer seems very logical."

Meulensteen clearly believes the style of football has plummeted since the Ferguson days, and he's certainly not wrong.
