I think Herrera is just as good (if not better than Oscar). He has a massive work rate, is technically skilled, can score goals, and is defensively very good.

I think we're overrating Herrera here a bit. He has a good workrate but is very rash with his challenges, far from defensively solid and isn't all that technical. When he has played as a number 10 this season, he hasn't stood out, been relatively poor in many matches.

I love Herrera and hope we hold onto him, he is a great squad option but I doubt Mourinho will start him as an attacking midfielder. Oscar is the much better when he is on form however, like Herrera, he fails to make a mark on most matches which is exactly why Mou wanted to upgrade on him last summer (wanted Isco) and also dropped him a couple times this season moving Fabregas forward in his place.

Oscar was the most replaceable player in that Chelsea side that won the title.

Na. I think he can be Mourinho's lampard.

Aside from him being no where near Lampard's level as well as completely different players.

I actually kind of agree with /u/goodguy1994

Yes, Lampard and Herrera are different players and I don't expect Herrera to ever score that number of goals but I can see Mourinho utilizing them in a vaguely similar sort of way. Herrera could be the central midfielder who has licence to get forward and contribute to the attack.

To me Herrera is clearly better playing as a central midfielder than as a 10 or deep lying midfielder in a double pivot. Personally, I feel that our best formation would be to play three in midfield with one defensive midfielder, a midfield controller who can contribute to all phases of play and a player who can support the attacking players.

                       Schneiderlin

           Schweinsteiger Herrera

This is a midfield that, given the time to blend, would have an excellent combination of ability, experience, creativity, passing and aggression. I really think this is a potentially dominant premier league midfield and could form the core of a very formidable side.

Compare it to the Chelsea midfield that we faced in the 2007/8 Champions League final. Yes Avram Grant was the manager but this was still very much Mourinho's team.

                         Makelele

                Ballack Lampard

Makelele the destroyer, Ballack the (German!) ball playing box to box midfielder and Lampard with the freedom to get forward an in the opposition box.

So yeah, to cut a long story short, Herrera could be Mourinho's new Lampard.

No I'm pretty sure if Mourinho comes he'll sign sanches or Gomez and will use Schweinsteiger for rotation.

Fair play. He's better than Lampard ever was.

See that's pushing it. You could say Lampard at his peak was better than Herrera when he was 21.

I see us buying James to play that role, him struggling in the PL at first and then finding success.
