Ugh. I don't understand why people are so trigger happy to pirate stuff. Just buy it like a decent human.
[–]baylithe/r/competitivehalo 40ポイント41ポイント42ポイント 4日前 (29子コメント)
Because it's free. If you can't understand why someone would rather not spend money but get the same result as if they did spend money, then you may have something wrong with you.
It's stealing though, so it's not really free. I won't turn away a free thing, but stealing it is different, cause it's not free. I don't understand the idea that someone would rather steal than give someone what they deserve. Especially to something like Undertale, which I believe was made by some small unknown team. Not like you're stealing from EA(which is still wrong).

It's not stealing, it's copying. If I steal a book from you, now I have a copy and you don't. If I copy your book, now we both have copies.
I'm not arguing the ethics of it, but they're theft and digital piracy are fundamentally different.
I have to leave so I don't have the time to finish reading the conversation, my apologies if this has already been covered.
When you pirate something you steal the money they haven gotten if you have purchased it. They've also spent their time, money, and effort to create what you've taken, so you're metaphorically stealing that as well.
I'm not arguing the ethics either by the way, this is just my two cents on the matter.
[–]Saicotic50+ assorted shitposting subs 0
I disagree, there's no financial difference for the devs between you not buying the game and you pirating the game (and those are not mutually exclusive).
When you pirate something you steal the money they haven gotten if you have purchased it.
I think your reasoning here is flawed, it sounds to me like you're saying that the consumer is obligated to purchase media that they consume. That would mean not just that you shouldn't pirate a game, but that you shouldn't play a borrowed or rented copy, because in each of those situations, a copy of the media is being consumed but the developers are not being paid for it.
yes but if you borrow a copy, you are going to give it back.. and the dev has given you permission to use it without paying, so long as you don't keep it and get rid of it after a certain amount of time... and in the case of renting.. you are borrowing, but also giving a little bit back, so the developer actually gains something in return... and in the final "legal" case you are essentially paying for permission to keep and use a copy of the developers own work.
you see, its not the fact that there's no financial difference that matters, but rather if you are doing something with the developers stuff with or without permission... would you look through a woman's handbag without permission? no, because she has private items in there.. would you have sex without consent? no you wouldn't.. because that would be rape..
Piracy isn't illegal because its stealing.. its illegal because you are doing something with an item without the consent of the owner or creator, and therefore are stealing the owners ability to do what he/she wishes to do with the item in question.
[–]Saicotic50+ assorted shitposting subs 0
you are borrowing, but also giving a little bit back, so the developer actually gains something in return
uhh what? the developer doesn't get money in any of those cases. they get paid for the one sold copy, what happens to it after that doesn't affect them. they still get $0 after the fact whether you rent, borrow, steal, or pirate a copy.
the dev has given you permission to use it without paying
where are you getting that from? they certainly don't write "may be loaned for use by others" in the EULA.
oh for god sake... you are being too literal.. for the first point.. sometimes the developer is the owner...there i used the terms interchangeably (even though they are not always interchangeable)
as for the EULA thing.. it dosen't matter if the owner has written that.. if you can prove that he said you could use it, then you can use it.. especially if the EULA states that if the owner says you can do it.. then you can do it (or something along those lines, normally that statement has more technical jargon, so i simplified it)
Or you could have borrowed it from a third party that has permission by the owner (through a written agreement with the owner) to loan out copies
[–]Saicotic50+ assorted shitposting subs 0
I never said owner, and I have no idea what point you're trying to make anymore
It's stealing, just not in the sense most people think of. Think of it like this:
Had a friend as a kid that lied about stupid stuff, but he argued he wasn't lying. Stuff like this "Regen, did you guys go ding dong ditching?", he'd say "no", cause we hadn't. We were out tping people's houses instead. You see how that's a lie? He intentionally left out the truth.
Another example would be this: I'm not stealing answers on the test, I just saw the answer sheet on the teacher's desk. That's stealing, the paper wasn't taken though, I just took a picture or wrote down the answers. The thing is, the answers aren't mine in that regard. I need to study or learn them in a studios manner. That's stealing in one way, but most people would just say I cheated.
Pirating a digital game is theft. You are not paying for an item that is for sale, and you're doing it against the will of the company. You have an item that is only for sale, but you got it by not paying for it through an illegal activity. The only exception would be someone giving it to you, but then again, they bought the game so it was their physical copy to give you. If they copied the game and sold it to, that is stealing. You might not know they did that, but they did and they are stealing. Their are laws saying you cannot do that. It's theft.
I don't care if you pirate stuff, you do you, but man up to what it is and call it by it's name. Piracy is theft.

Stuff like this "Regen, did you guys go ding dong ditching?", he'd say "no", cause we hadn't. We were out tping people's houses instead. You see how that's a lie? He intentionally left out the truth.
That is clearly not a lie. If the question was "Did you go out pranking people?" and his answer was "No, I didn't ding-dong-ditch anyone", then yes, that could be interpreted as a lie.
Another example would be this: I'm not stealing answers on the test, I just saw the answer sheet on the teacher's desk. That's stealing, the paper wasn't taken though, I just took a picture or wrote down the answers.
This analogy doesn't even make sense in regards to piracy.

Stopped reading. I seriously hope this is a joke
I get that you have skewed your interpretation of the words, that doesn't mean you're not wrong though.
The definition of a lie by google is:
an intentionally false statement. or
used with reference to a situation involving deception or founded on a mistaken impression.
My friend was lying, as you can see by the definitions. He used deception. Come on, this is common sense to a kindergartner. He was just lying to himself so he didn't seem bad in front of us. You're a bit older, stop playing stupid.
The second example isn't about piracy. It's about how an individual copied the answers and it's considered stealing. I get it, you did bad in school, you lack critical thinking obviously. That doesn't mean it was okay of you to steal answers for the test and cheat.
I'm sorry, the word is spelled studious*. My bad, but I would assume you could figure out the correct word I meant, considering the context and it's only one letter different. Then again, you do mod /r/4chan, so you probably saw a trap thread and felt you should contribute.
You wanna stop being dumb and call piracy what it is already? It's theft. Do it or don't, but grow some balls already and admit what it is.
Why is it important to you to call it theft in the first place? Piracy is already a crime. You can call it piracy, you can call it a copyright violation, and no one can argue that point. You can shift from that to calling it wrong or immoral, and avoid a whole lot of grief about definitions.
Why is this "piracy=theft" argument so commonly the hill redditors choose to die on?
Something doesn't have to be theft to be wrong.

It's not theft. Theft is when you take something from someone and then the person doesn't have it anymore. You can't steal a digital asset as you can copy it. This is license evasion.

It hurts the developer. When people pirate a game instead of buying it, that directly hurts the developer. Call it whatever you want, but it isn't victimless.
Chances are if someone is gonna pirate a game they either weren't going to or weren't able to pay for it, so the developer loses literally nothing. In fact, many people will go back and buy a game they pirated if they enjoy it and find themselves wanting to support the dev.

Because its digital. I buy computer parts. I buy car audio parts. I buy goped parts. I can't just sit on my ass and type a few things and make a few clicks to get those items like I can with music, movies, or games.
My steam account has 90 games. I bought most. A lot on sale.
Single player games? Why bother?
If game developers don't make a proper demo, I'm likely going to just pirate it unless it's cheap enough and I know how it is.
Most multiplayer focused games there is no choice though.

Then just go to a site that streams it for free. You're at least doing something then. projectfreetv comes to mind for shows and movies. Pirating it helps noone.

Does the distinction matter?
Yes, cause you're not helping the show's producer if you pirate. Pirating is circumventing the process of sells. You're doing an illegal activity to do whatever you please. I have a game that the makers of it said they would never make a US release of, so pirating it was okay, that was fine, they gave their consent. I'm not aware of any company for a TV show or movie(besides The Interview) that gave away their consent for people to pirate it. Even then I didn't pirate The Interview.

How does streaming it for free help the show's producer?
They gave consent to that site. To put it honestly, I don't care if people pirate, you do you. I just don't like when people can't man up and admit that they are stealing. I pirated Fate Stay Night, their is no english release I believe, so I pirated it. Only game I've illegally done it to.
Sites that stream it, just took the pirated versions and put it on a website to make money from ads. I don't see where the consent comes in.
If that's the case, just buy it or get cable. And their are streamings sites that do get consent. Crunchyroll is one of them. Like I said, I don't care, you do you. I just don't like it when people won't call a spade a spade.
What he is talking about is streaming websites (like crunchyroll for example) that purchase the rights to stream various content of shows and movies. You are able to watch it for free* (*advertisement will show up every period or some will be behind a subscription pay wall) and by watching shows this way you are still supporting the content producers. If you were to go watch that show/movie on some random website that does not do this you are hurting the content producers as you removing yourself as a customer that is supporting the content they produce. I understand if you don't "want to support" the content producers but thing of piracy as this: Lets say you walk into the bakery and see some whole grain bread. You think to yourself "I heard this bread is good but I don't want to pay for it." You go home and along the way there is a man giving out whole grain bread FOR FREE! Not caring that this man looks suspicious you ask him for whole grain bread and go home to consume it. Over the next few months you and numerous other people to continue to ask this man for all different kinds of bread and he provides it. One day you hear that various bakeries in the city have closed down due to bankruptcy. How can these bakeries be going bankrupt if they got customers? Turns out this man has been stealing the bread of the bakeries and now the bakeries cannot run as they cannot afford to produce more bread.
On the other hand you have streaming services that work like this (using the bread example): An organization decided to go and give out bread to people. They decide to go around to various bakeries around the city to ask for deals on getting bread. After obtaining the bread they *host their operation at a community center. You find out that bread was being given out at this community center so you come by to get some. When you get there they have some advertisement on the wall and when you go to grab some bread they tell you about some products such as video games/movies/shows coming out soon. You thank them and go home with the bread you got free. Over these months the bakeries around the city are able to thrive and maybe even expand from the new profits they are obtaining from this organization.
TL;DR There is a different between pirated and streaming. One does not give the producers any money and the other provides money to the producers.
edit: removed a word for proper grammar*
