Look at how fast science was developing by German scientists when they tossed ethics out

Also Unit 731 gave no fucks

Most of our frostbite data comes from them I think

Other way around I think. Germans gave us studies on the cold. From what I understand of it, 731's didn't follow scientific procedures and most of their results are garbage.

They were useful enough for the leaders of the unit to trade the results for their lives.

Had to write a 20 page paper on this. Unit 731 gave information on how to properly defrost a body part using warm water and such. But most of their data was rubbish

The way I've heard it, we traded immunity for scientific data regarding Unit 731. Feel free to correct me if that's kind of bullshit but that how I understand it.

Pretty sure you're correct.

Actually, I just looked it up and it was German experiments in Dachau. Japanese did frostbite experiments. My mistake. Im editing my top comment for correctness.

Ah. Well then glad you corrected the mistake, and now we both know.

Unit 731's data was, in its entirety, useless. Their "methodology" was tuned more towards "How many people did this kill?" instead of "How did it kill them?" unless you count "It was effective because they're filthy Chinese" as valid results.

The Nazi data was also mostly worthless (due to lack of rigor), with the exception of the frostbite/altitude experiments - those were done with the intent of helping German sailors/pilots, so they actually paid attention to experimental procedure.

hmm mm those were some photos i wish i hadn't seen.

What's Unit 731?

Japanese bioweapons/chemical weapons unit from WW2. More so than the Nazis, they committed some of the worst war crimes of the war - injecting POWs/civilians with anthrax and plague, neurotoxic chemicals, and the like, and then doing vivisections on them while still alive and conscious. They carpet bombed many Chinese cities with experimental bombs carrying plague rats and smallpox-infected materials.

Lets see what happens when we throw a baby in the air and use it as target practice!

Less than that. You could say they gave sub-zero fucks.

How I'd love to write "I give no fucks" on my next ethics proposal. I'm not even killing innocent humans.

Humans can achieve man great things as long as you don't give a fuck about a certain people. Need to build a huge pyramid? Just throw human death and suffering at it.

EDIT: it's from a Louis CK bit

Actually, the pyramids were built by paid workers who actually had pretty decent conditions.

They were fed and supplied with places to sleep, had accessed to what healthcare/healing was possible, and were in fact treated nicely since it was an honourable job to build the tomb of their pharao.

They also had beer! I'd tolerate a pretty shitty job if they gave me beer.

[–]Cult_of_Slaanesh 6ポイント7ポイント  (1子コメント)

I'd do it for sex, even if I was the one getting fucked. Not much different than my government job anyways. At least I'd be doing something constructive though.

Upvote for grimdank username.

Don't forget meat! When you are eating veggies all year, beer and meat is worth moving some rock for!

but muh biblical truths

Leave it to the Jews to invent receipts.

Edit: making a joke based on a bible story and newly found evidence gets me down voted? What the hell?

[–]Rokusi 0

Also, aside from the Bible, there is zero evidence of the Hebrews ever being in Egypt, much less enslaved and then led on the Exodus.

So then who did they get to build the pyramids?

[–]Rokusi 3

Egyptian workers. The government used the public building programs as a sort of welfare system since the land could not be worked while the Nile was flooded. In addition, the Pyramid of Giza is believed to have been made by skilled and salaried workers.

What, like a stimulus package?

[–]Rokusi 2

Well, no. More like the New Deal programs, but annual instead of in response to the Great Depression. You're an ancient King with a large section of population who have nothing to do and are probably running low on stored grain and beer, and so are getting rowdy. You also wish to construct great projects to convince people of your majesty and splendor and all that, so that they won't question why you get to be the one in charge. It's a win/win.

Very little death and suffering went into the pyramids. Slavery was for house servants only who mostly prepared food. The workers were the farmers and craftsmen that had no work due to the annual Nile flood.

And they were paid

AND THEY GOT FREE BEER AND BREAD.

[–]Ulftar 5

actually that may have been the pay

I wouldn't even mind, my money is going towards beer anyway. At least that skips the middle man!

Yeah but how else are you going to store grain?

A good portion of human achievement has been built on slavery.

Shame we threw one of our most productive traditions away...

EDIT: should probably add that this is a joke.

Gonna get a lot of shit done when we got robot slaves

Need a train track through that mountain? Just throw a bunch of Asians in a cave and blow em up.

[–]Rokusi 0

Couldn't you get by just blowing up the cave? Why do you need the Asians in there?

Let me guess, you're not from the USA?

[–]Rokusi 0

Maryland. Perhaps it's because I'm East Coast that I don't get it since the railroads were out west.

The joke is that Asian immigrants were payed very little and worked with dynamite in dangerous conditions to build railroads across America. It's the second part of Louis CK's bit.

I hope this is sarcasm, because almost all of the Nazi "experiments" yielded no meaningful data.

Seriously, everyone likes to go on a contrarian wank about how the Nazis were good scientists if nothing else, but of all their experiments, the only thing that can be admitted as actual science were their experiments on human endurance, which IIRC has helped in the development of hypothermia treatment. Wow, what wonders they achieved when they threw out ethics.

Yep, unsurprisingly when your "scientists" are more interested in torture than science, you don't learn much.

Oh... shit. I've been doing it wrong this whole time...? Better go tell Gary he can go home...

Not really entirely down to a lack of ethics. Had more to do with hiring blood thirsty sadistic maniacs instead of legitimate scientists.

Well, in practice, "blood thirsty sadistic maniacs" and "lack of ethics" are often linked.

No ethical quandries here, but they were really good at making rockets.

I came into this thread knowing this bullshit was coming. /r/ShitWehraboosSay would like this thread.

How the fuck do you pronounce wehraboo?

Wear-ah-boo? Vair-ah-boo?

I think it's a portmanteau of Wehrmacht and Weaboo, if that helps.

Wow, there really is a subreddit for everything.

Goddamn do I love that sub.

Day 60, still no data. Maybe I should stab his kidneys again.

Maybe injecting bleach into his eyes will help achieve...whatever it is I'm trying to do.

yeah, what did they discover? That freezing people to death makes them dead?

What science? They didn't learn shit from human experiments

It wasn't! Holy fuck, this is such a failure of history education. The German scientists learned almost fucking nothing. Almost every experiment was just sadistic torture that yielded no useful information.

Why are so many people on reddit down with Nazis?

'Cool' uniforms, historical revisionism, eugenics, racism.

Those same scientists are the reason we walked on the moon...

Look up/google "Operation Paperclip".

Not really. Those were rocket scientists, who had nothing to do with the "science" that was more like thinly veiled torture.

So you're saying its impossible for one scientific field to benefit from the advancement of other fields? Yeah okay.

I'm fairly sure that von Braun's rocketry research did not depend on knowing what happens when you connect a man's esophagus directly to his intestines.

You have zero proof that the Nazi scientists didn't communicate with each other and show their findings on their results amongst the Nazi community.

I have perfect proof that Mengele didn't help von Braun in the slightest:

  • Mengele performed sadistic "experiments" on humans.
  • von Braun built rockets.
  • Rockets are not humans.
  • Therefore, Mengele's experiments did not help von Braun.

I'm saying that the glorified torturers had nothing to do with going to the moon. And they didn't advance any fields. They learned a little bit about hypothermia but nothing we couldn't have figured out by other means.

They are talking about unethical science practices.

Rocket science and engineering are not one of those.

Yes knowingly making the V2 rockets that would be used on civilians in the UK wasn't unethical at all.

It was war, making weapons is not a war crime. What mengele did is a war crime.
