In Colorado Springs this week. The area is beautiful, the city, not so much. Drove out to Denver yesterday, and that was nice. I feel like my family and I should actually go and stay in Denver next time, and then drive down to Colorado Springs to see family for a day or two.

So, did you know that if you want to read some book they have in a museum, you can just ask for it? I didn't.

Now I've got a scanned manuscript of Lt. William Pringle Green's Instructions for Training a Ship's Crew to the use of Arms in Attack and Defence, which is as far as I know the only manual that describes how to dual-wield a sabre with a firearm. Unfortunately his handwriting is sloppy, if consistent, and it will take some time to decipher.

On a related note, National Maritime Museum in Greenwich only accepts payment by credit card through the means of filling the card details into a form and faxing that to them (because e-mails are considered not secure). I've had to search long and hard before I found what I believe to be the last operable fax machine to the east of Rhine and north of the Alps.

Okay, let's see what is happening with my life.

Saturday I was at my mother's place gardening again. I cut back a whole bunch of bamboo plants and Golden Cane, did some weeding and swept the garage.

Sunday I went to my grandmothers and moved stuff out of her shed, moved her old washing machine out to the front to be picked up by the garbage men and helped her neighbour move out an old fridge for the same reason.

My right arm is aching from having to do the above, and I have a sore throat signalling the onset of a cold. Unusually I am grateful for this as a sore throat usually means tonsilitis is coming, but that is usually indicated by a lumpy pain at the back of my throat, which is absent this time.

I am knee deep in modding for Total War: Rome 2 and have created 5 units in two days.

I got a call from an organization in another state that I applied to for employment. Even though I did not get the job, they said I was one of the top candidates and they want me to apply for another position!

It's SXSW here in Austin. Yesterday, I went to the Silent Room, which involved sitting in a queue for an hour and half to wait for a minute of introspection in a completely silent room. While I think it's a cool idea, I also think there was tons more opportunity for introspection in the queue then there ever was in a minute in a creepy box. Really, the whole experience could have been improved with a flashing neon sign in the silent room saying "And what have you learned?"

Though I'll be honest, introspection is kind of a scary thing. It gives us time to think thoughts that we probably shouldn't and that we otherwise wouldn't necessarily have the courage to consider. I think it also does so much to make cynics out of all of us. On the other hand, it's good to step back, reexamine the reality you've created for yourself, and decide whether it should persist. Just not while queuing for an hour and a half.
