You should try the anime-ish series Cowboy Bebop; the main character, Spike, is pretty Taoist, in both his fighting style and his approach to life.

His best friend jet also has his fair share of taoist moments! Especially when he's talking to his bonsai trees.

Absolutely! The bonsai trees of course come to mind... and when Spike does get emotional, Jet tends to have a calmer, more taoist approach.

Hell yes! Wow, can't believe I didn't think of Bebop.

Kung Fu with David Carradine

I need to check this out, absolutely loved Carradine in Kill Bill.

Many of the Ghibli Studios movies. Latest one I noticed was Tales of Earthsea

Would you consider Mononke to be one??

[–]misfitxj 2ポイント3ポイント  (0子コメント)

Very much so. The message behind that entire movie is the need for man and nature to coexist. Sometimes it's only one character or maybe one trait in one character but it's always there I find.

is this related to Le Guin's Earthsea series of novels?

edit: i just saw that she's listed as one of the writers, so i guess it is based on her work. which makes sense, all of her writing is pretty heavily influenced by taoism

Wow I didn't know this Sub is so active, great suggestions everyone! Hope I think of more.

There was a book I saw once "the Tao of Pooh" about Winnie the Pooh. Didn't get a chance to read, I'll have to check it out. Makes sense though

I'd like to get it more active, though I guess that kinda defeats the point?

The Legend of Bagger Vance

Anything Heideggerian is likely to have some Taoist theme; watch any Malick, but I'd recommend Thin Red Line and The Tree of Life.

Also music. So much music. My recent favorite is eyedeas & abilities. If you can get into them, they're sooo good.

Stalker directly lifts sections from the Dao

And in general, it's got a pretty heavy Daoist vibe.

Lots of Daoism in film is pretty shallow "ching chong nip nong be like the water" type of stuff, but Stalker is a pretty fucking deep movie altogether. It's really more about spirituality and faith in general, but I think it has an all around Daoist aesthetic. That said, it's much more authentic, original, and natural than it is dogmatic about anything. I've never seen a movie quite like it.
