It was the capitol city of the Aztecs and the center of their civilization. They had trade bazaars and merchants from all over the New World. Around the outside of the city they grew food on chiampas, which were floating gardens.

Besides being the capital of the empire (making the workings of government an important "industry") agriculture amd its co-industries was very important to the city:

The city was also the commercial/trade center for the Aztecs with its location in the densely populated Valley of Mexico.

WOOPS! My apologies. The main economic activity of of Tenochtitlan was... commerce. It was a trade center and agricultural center.
