A friend bought one, so I lent it for a day to decide whether I want it for myself...
The Good
- I like the design. A LOT. It's a simple, solid block, and that's all it needs to be. I'm just glad Logitech hadn't lost all senses and give everything an over-the-top design *cough*G910*cough*.
- While plastic, the material is solid and premium. No cheap feeling anywhere *cough*G910 palmrest*cough*, and both the braided cable and the USB plug are nice touches.
- The keycaps. THANK YOU LOGITECH. It turned out even better then I thought, and now it finally feels like a usable keyboard.
- Large indicator lights. Compared to the G910 and G410, the G810 has huge indicator lights. RGB too.
The Neutral
- I have a feeling the ROMER-G switches have changed a bit -- there used to bit of bounce at the end of key travel, which gave it a distinct rubber dome like feedback, but now it knocks hard on the bottom, and feels more mechanical. I'm not sure if it's actually the switch or the keyboard itself that caused this, but the strokes are now a lot more crisp then before.
- That said, switches are a personal preference, and it would also depend on the game you're playing. ROMER-G switches are best for game where you'd trigger keys often, but not continuously -- i.e., MOBA style game where you use the keyboard for firing off skills, instead of holding a key to move like FPS games. Logitech needs a lighter, linear switch for the latter, something akin to a MX red.
The Bad
- No palm rest. The G810 is THICK -- for people used to keyboards with palm rests, the fingers are raised high up to an awkward position with the palm sitting on the table.
- No Arx Dock. While I personally don't miss it, it is an indication that Logitech may be giving up on the platform, which never seemed to have been given a chance.
- No G Keys. This would be the biggest failure in my book -- What separates a gaming keyboard from a office one should be the inclusion of G keys, especially when Logitech boasts some of best macro customization options out there. Though on the flip side, it does make for a nice office keyboard if I keep the shiny lights down...
- Microswitches for the media keys feel cheap. It's not that big of a deal, but still, 160USD...
