Reddit is a fucking broken record. I'm British and I love appropriate levels of Yank-bashing, but the perpetual, repetitive, gratuitous "lol America sux" posts are just annoying. It's purely masturbatory.

I've seen posts comparing American police to Germany police on the front page at least 10 times and the discourse in the comments is always exactly the same. Everyone just uses the submission as a pretext to praise Germany (or any other country) and denigrate the USA.

I love it when people gloat about Americans losing in Vietnam when the Vietnamese had previously defeated France and then went on to defeat China.

They weren't pushovers. They had the largest standing army in the world during the war and were supplied and financed by the Soviet Union. There isn't a single country that would have done better in Vietnam than the US did. It was an unwinable war. The UK wouldn't have been able to fight for a week in those conditions.

Actually I would say that racial divisions are more common in countries with more minorities.

Hard to be racist about black people in your country when there are only 3 of them and you never see them.

todayilearned 内の TheGravemindx によるリンク TIL that Canada and the USA are the least racist countries in the world; India and Jordan are the most racist.

[–]CorrodedToTheBone 201ポイント202ポイント  (0子コメント)

I'm not shocked by this at all. People who say Americans are racist are usually doing this to deflect attention from their own racism. The US is a convenient scapegoat for people because any problem in the US will get more attention than a similar or worse problem in less powerful, less reported-on countries. This allows people to avoid dealing with their own nations' problems.

I'm a Briton and I think it's silly how my friends and family all seem to be under the assumption that Americans are racist, yet they themselves are quite openly racist against Pakistanis and Bangladeshis. The hypocrisy is astounding. I hear people complain about "Pakis" and "curry monkeys" all the time, and they do so in polite society without being ostracized for their racism like they would be in the US. These same people will call Americans "pig-ignorant racists!" without feeling the irony.

I've been to the US and I never witnessed any racism, I never heard anyone make a racist remark. Almost every time I go to a pub here in Bristol if there are any minorities brave enough to enter these mostly white establishments, they'll get a lot of puzzled looks and at least some people will complain about them being there. Maybe not aloud, but in whispered voices at least.

I went to the south of the US where racism is supposed to be common, and I saw completely mixed groups of people with none of that racial tension you get in the UK when any dark skinned person walks into a white pub.

Because America has an obsession with telling everyone else how amazing they are.

Despite the fact that the US is the most powerful country in the world, I hear Americans brag about their country way less often than Europeans and Canadians brag about theirs.

It's enjoyable to remind them of things like their healthcare system in these situations.

First off, what you believe about the US health care system is probably a bunch of false propaganda. Secondly, the fact that you would actually enjoy reminding someone of what you at least think is a major problem in their country only makes you look like a ghoul.

No other country gets this kind of scrutiny in which everyone enjoys slagging them and obsessing over their problems that are real or might not even be as bad as you think they are.

I'm British but I find it strange how people who don't live in America actually care deeply that Americans do things differently or like different things.

Nobody does this with any other country. People place an inordinate amount of importance on criticising and nit-picking everything about the US. People also pretend there is a difference when there isn't actually any difference, they just want to pretend the US is different and therefore bad.

Imagine if an American said "What is up with the Mexican obsession with tortillas!". People would downvote the living shite out of that person.

explainlikeimfive 内の FlyByDusk によるリンク ELI5: Why don't other countries have military bases on U.S. soil, whereas we have many U.S. bases on foreign soil?

[–]CorrodedToTheBone 379ポイント380ポイント  (0子コメント)

Because a foreign country having a base in the US wouldn't serve any purpose. The US military is sufficiently powerful that it doesn't need other countries to have bases there to provide security and deterrence in the same way US military bases provide these things to other countries (or the US itself).

I'm British, but I think it's funny how people see the US military very unrealistically, especially here in Britain. We don't care to admit how much we depend on the Yanks. There are dozens of countries whose security is directly or indirectly dependent on the US military. In fact, there are countries that exist today that wouldn't exist were it not for the US military. Kuwait, South Korea etc..

Even relatively powerful countries often need the US to pick up the slack and provide capabilities that they don't have. I remember reading that the entire European Union combined only has 1/10th of the military capabilities the US has. It's funny how we criticise Americans for their militarism when it's the US military's power that allows us to be less militaristic. The US has had morally ambiguous military actions, but the fact remains that without the US the western world would much less secure. The US protects all of our interests and acts as the guarantee of western policies. When Britain talked tough against Serbia in the Balkans conflicts, it was actually the US that did all the work. If the US didn't have bases in Europe, the genocide in Kosovo would either have been completed successfully or would still be happening now. Europe, despite its supposed strengths, couldn't have hoped to stop the genocide without American support. The US basically did 99% of the work while European countries only provided a token gesture of participation even though the genocide was occurring in our own backyard.
