By tradition, every year on April 21 Aggies gather in College Station or wherever they are in the world to remember those who have passed. A speaker calls roll for those who died. When we hear the name of someone we knew, we respond "Here." We speak for them since they only live in us now. It's very sentimental, and kind of chilling. On campus, all lights are cut as the sun goes down and people proceed silently to and from the ceremony. Tens of thousands attend.

So the comment literally says "I knew someone who died that night." Of course, it could be a more figurative memorial to fallen Aggies.
