Wait, so they cut down perfectly fine trees for the bonfire rather than just collecting scrap wood? And the whole reason is some bullshit rivalry with another College? And they used to not let women participate?

Good riddance.

Interesting article though, thanks.

To all the idiots agreeing with the retard below me, lack of trees in an area is a reason to not cut them down. God Americans can be fucking stupid.

The tradition started almost 60 years before women were allowed to go to school there. Women were allowed to participate...2 of the people that died were women.

The trees are likely harvested from tree farms, since they are more likely to be straight and uniform to maintain structural integrity and safety, not to mention it's sustainable that way. This would also be a hell of a lot safer than burning scrap wood which would likely come from old pallets and construction materials, which are all pressure treated and release toxic chemicals into the air when burned.

The trees were harvested from people's property that wanted the land cleared anyways.

Good riddance?

You have to be fucking kidding me.

They woodn't have died in vain if it was for the environment.

That is the shittiest attempt at a pun I have ever seen.

For structural integrity. A pile of wood scraps will not build a structure. Also, there was an annual follow up event called Replant.

And the whole reason is some bullshit rivalry with another College?

It was more of a big campus party around a camp fire... a very large one. So it was basically a club for people to get out doors, get exercise, build things together, and party. What exactly is wrong with that?

Have you been to that part of Texas?

It's not exactly a forest

[–]relax343 10ポイント11ポイント  (3子コメント)

Are you serious? That's even more of a reason to not chop down trees.

Believe it or not, timber is a renewable resource. Bonfire was followed by an event called Replant where Aggies offset the environmental impact. Remember that cut happened on land that was already intended to be cleared.

I don't expect this to convince you as your comments in this thread already display your (in)ability for rational thought, ("God Americans can be fucking stupid.") but the point needed to be addressed.

Edit: Also, just as an attempt at infuriating you, I buy 30-50 truckloads of timber everyday and live ~2hrs from College Station.

Sometimes they were donated, but it does mention in the article that they replant trees; one number being over 400 in a single season.

The university is in the middle of a city, of course it's "not a forest"

Go a few miles outside of the city and, yes, it's pretty much a forest

I live in that part of Texas, and any land left unattended turns into forest quickly. Granted the trees will probably be short due to the soil and prevalent local species, but it is still a forest.
