Trump started the debate by defending the size of his penis. Satire is dead. American politics killed it.

Watch this drive his poll numbers up. I've given up on trying to make sense of any of this.

Trump repeating "Klu Klux Klan" twice and not Ku Klux Klan is the Trumpian version of telling a lie with his fingers crossed

Trump sucks, man.

Edit: Megyn Kelly is acting like a mother breaking up squabbling children.

Also apparently she is 45. She doesn't look it at all.

Edit: My Trump tie is amazing, ngl. I get so many compliments on it. I hope they are made in Mexico, it keeps em cheap.

Probably would really help to have someone that wasn't tarnished by this pretty brutal primary.

I think Jeb Bush should have just punched Trump in the face his last debate. save American democracy.

What just happened? Trump just said he wants more immigration of highly-skilled workers, in Detroit?

[–]wumbotarianArbitrageur in the rare pepe market[S] 14ポイント15ポイント  (17子コメント)

Kasich says states should sit down with businesses to figure out state minimum wage.

Thank you based Kasich. At least a signal that he's not awful on labor econ.

/u/besttrousers

Shouldn't it also include labor reps though? Otherwise it's kind of one sided.

[–]wumbotarianArbitrageur in the rare pepe market[S] 1ポイント2ポイント  (9子コメント)

Unions would want a high minimum wage though (and make exceptions for their services).

But yeah, I meant its a decent signal. Kasich isn't perfect.

And business would want a lower one.

[–]wumbotarianArbitrageur in the rare pepe market[S] 1ポイント2ポイント  (6子コメント)

Yes they would.

My point is I don't really trust 'labor reps'. I am not convinced unions have the interest or workers at heart.

Labor economists should be consulted yeah, but generally that isn't meant when people say labor reps.

Unions are made of workers, though.

[–]wumbotarianArbitrageur in the rare pepe market[S] -1ポイント0ポイント  (4子コメント)

Yes, and unions represent member workers, not non-members.

In most states they are legally obligated to negotiate on behalf of all workers.

[–]wumbotarianArbitrageur in the rare pepe market[S] -1ポイント0ポイント  (2子コメント)

All workers in the union.

When workers in the union are substitutes for low skill non union workers, an exogenous increase in the minimum wage would shift employers from hiring those minimum wage workers to hiring unions workers.

No, when my union negotiates wages the new contract applies to all faculty members, regardless of their membership in the union.

[–]Vagabond21They call me "Bond" because the return on my comments is fixed. 0

Fuck it, Rock, paper, scissors to decide.

[–]besttrousers"Then again, I have pegged you for a Neoclassical/Austrian." 6ポイント7ポイント  (5子コメント)

What does "sit down and figure out" mean? Germany-ish worker council? Or just, y'know, chatting?

[–]wumbotarianArbitrageur in the rare pepe market[S] 1ポイント2ポイント  (4子コメント)

Probably working out a law? Or probably getting organic coffee at the local co-op.

[–]besttrousers"Then again, I have pegged you for a Neoclassical/Austrian." 1ポイント2ポイント  (3子コメント)

But it's not like businesses aren't consulted on MW laws already.

[–]wumbotarianArbitrageur in the rare pepe market[S] 1ポイント2ポイント  (2子コメント)

Sure. I don't get your point. I just think it was good that Kasich didn't say "no minimum wage".

And while I dislike minimum wages, state level ones are better tuned to local markets better than one national MW.

[–]besttrousers"Then again, I have pegged you for a Neoclassical/Austrian." 0ポイント1ポイント  (1子コメント)

I didn't watch this part, just trying to figure out what he meant.

[–]wumbotarianArbitrageur in the rare pepe market[S] 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

Honestly, no idea. I am sure he knows that businesses are consulted - he presided over minimum wage increases as Ohio governor, which is why the question came up - but he probably needed a pro-business twang to his answer.

That being said, Kasich actually answered policy questions, which means everything he said was ignored.

[–]besttrousers"Then again, I have pegged you for a Neoclassical/Austrian." 7ポイント8ポイント  (5子コメント)

Rubio doesn't understand Becker. criminals make decisions on the margin.

Any time I catch a GOP debate Kasich is the only one that ever resembles an adult

[–]wumbotarianArbitrageur in the rare pepe market[S] 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

Yeah definitely. Cruz is acting very reasonably well too.

Honestly they need to not give The Donald so much air time.

Count to ten, Donald.

did cruz just say remove harmful taxes and raise tariffs?

Yup 16% across the board on all imports. :-/

Did I hear correctly -- he wanted a 16% tax on imports, but no tax on exports... and then called it a "32% differential?" Would that not be a 16% difference...

Kasich bringing up vouchers!!!! What do people think about that Louisiana paper though? Are vouchers still good econ?

[–]jorioWhen does baseball season start?

Louisiana paper? Can you link to this?

[–]wumbotarianArbitrageur in the rare pepe market[S] 0ポイント1ポイント  (1子コメント)

Louisiana paper having a one year time period is dumb.

Didn't Heckman show that pre-K had effects far, far out in years? Didn't he show that cognitive gains disappeared after a few years?

So why don't we have a longer time frame? Maybe there's a J curve effect.

I welcome empirical evidence on vouchers - we need it - but one year is really limited.

Fair Enough, but what did you think about the paper's proposed explanation for the negative effects (i.e that "the [voucher program] may attract private schools struggling to maintain enrollment"). I thought that was interesting since the usual anti voucher argument is that private schools only select high quality students.

I don't like Trump but did he really get called out for not creating textile manufacturing jobs in the United States? I can appreciate calling him inconsistent, useless as it is, but seriously? Textiles are the hill we're dying on now?

It's not about the textiles. It's about the inconsistency. The textiles are an example of that.

I get that, the general reaction from the audience to the suggestion seemed positive and I saw a few FB posts from friends and family who supported the idea of bringing textile jobs back to the US. That's kind of what I'm questioning, I can understand someone being concerned about the effect free trade can have on local industry but I do not get why someone would want to bring textile manufacturing back.

Kasich strong with "I'm not going to bite."

Is there anything funnier or more stereotypical than a Trump supporter bringing up the fact romney was endorsed by Trump and praised Donald when Donald has given 100's of thousands to Dems in various offices?

[–]Millea 0

Did I hear Ted Cruz right when he said 16% tariff on foreign goods?

And earlier today, Mitt Romney said that Trump wants a 35% tariff on goods imported from China.

I'm not an economist, or very educated in economics at all, which is why I'm asking here and hope to get a good answer, but everything that I have read on the subject suggests that tariffs are a bad idea. Is there any justification for these policies, or is it simply bad economics?
