That is awesome.

Its crazy how similar their thought process is. "Oh wow! A person? I'm hyped!"

More than likely, that person also had a tray of food.

Soooo many fluffs ^_^

About 18... or...?

I tried counting a couple times. Got 19 a couple times, 20 once and 17 once. So yeah, somewhere around 18.

What kind of dogs are those?

Look like Australian Shepards and border collies. Some but not all of their tails are docked. So my guess is a litter or two of each.

Can confirm, definitely Aussies. Which by the way are the best dogs to ever own. Literally excel in every aspect of being a dog. Smart, cute, obedient, loving, can herd cattle.

I would second this to just add that nearly any kind of "herding" dog to be at the top of the list. I've owned 3 Shetland sheepdogs (2 male and 1 female) and they are of a very similar temperament, intelligence, loyal, obedient, low maintenance, etc as an aussie (but instead of herding cows, they herd sheep). I've also had 2 rough collies while growing up and they were the exact same (just bigger). Now I have a German Shepherd and he is just as smart, loving, obedient, and awesome as any other "herding/shepard" breed I've ever had.

You simply can't go wrong with any herding breed.

I don't know if I'm just a shitty dog trainer or what, because my Blue Heeler is a nightmare. He loves me and could learn any trick you can imagine, but he is very high maintenance exercise-wise and has terrible separation anxiety. If I don't exercise him enough, he gets destructive... and is creative about it. Dude ate the FLOORS of my apartment! How do you eat a floor!!

That's not just you. Blue Heelers need loooots of exercise or they go bananas. This is also true of many of the dogs above. They are working dogs and meant to be running all day, and they are the absolute best dogs if they get lots of exercise, but can get antsy if they don't.

If you're in the position to have a fence for him to run, that would be best. If not, you're just gonna have to bust your ass keeping him busy. That is the only downside to dogs like these, they need to be working to be happy.

That's the biggest thing - no yard at all. He does chase my cat around all day, though.

So work sets them free?

In a way, yes. Most working dogs need to be active or at least exercised daily. It will release a lot of stress and excess energy they have. Same with people.

Oh cattle dogs are just dipshits. Actually any of the herding breeds without enough exercise will destroy your stuff. And shelties which another user mentioned are super prone to separation anxiety.

I don't like Blue Heelers....you've got a monster on your hands lol. My German Shepard will eat anything paper-related. Toilet paper, napkins, newspapers, whatever. He will chew it, swallow it, and keep on eating until I stop him. Nothing like eating a floor lol.

Own 2 corgi's can confirm the herding dogs = master race.

Own 2 English Bulldogs, can confirm they are baked potatoes that sit on the couch all day.

Can confirm, couch and bed are two of my bulldog's favorite activities.

By far the most stubborn and lazy animals I have ever owned, but at the same time the 2 best dogs I have ever experienced, I will have at least one for the rest of my life.

I have a Cane Corso and she needs about 20 - 40 mins of play a day she's still a pup with pup energy but as soon as she decides its couch or bed time, you cannot get that dog to move hardly. she loves to lay around and snuggle.

[–]buttery_shame_cave [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

i sat for a english bulldog once as a favor to a neighbor. that dog was hilarious and awesome. plenty of energy for walkies or ball chasing, but when it was done he'd trudge over to a cushion and flop down and be snoring within seconds. and not just light 'zzzzzznk' snoring, but straight up 'what's up with all the downshifting trucks' full-throated sawing away.

also that dog re-defined 'party animal' after 3 beers. he was the chillest energetic friendly lovable drunk...

I wish my English Bulldog was like yours lol She is 3 and is so full of energy.

corgis are herding dogs? I thought they were fairy mounts.

Definitely herding dogs as well. Currently have a half lab/half corgi and he used to nip at the heels of our other dog and try to herd him

[–]hamsack_the_ruthless 1ポイント2ポイント  (0子コメント)

Border collies fit this too, so damn smart

... aussie shetland mix?

I read recently that Rottweilers were actually bred for herding, have rottie, can confirm best ever. We also have a corgi but he's an asshole and a pitbull but I think his low self esteem gets in his way often :/

Edit:herding not breeding

[–]Don_Julio_Acolyte 4ポイント5ポイント  (1子コメント)

.....

My brother rescued a border collie mix which is really bad about letting people leave rooms (nips at them until they're back in the room), and is extremely bad about chasing children. Are these common problems with herding dogs, or just the exception?

I would say pretty common across the board for herding breeds. Though the severity of this behavior can vary based on whether they have a "herding instinct."

You can also train this behavior out of your dog.

Most herding dogs just stand in front of you when you don't go where they want you to. You have to learn to lead with your feet or you will trip.
Your brother's dog has seen some trauma and is overprotective. The nipping is not common needs to be stopped.

Aussies heard sheep. Hence Shepard.

[–]Pete_The_Mediocre [スコア非表示]  (2子コメント)

I love Aussies, but I will never ever suggest owning one to a single person in a city.

My family's Aussie puppy need to be running at least two hours a day and if she doesn't, she becomes terrible, especially with biting stuff when she was younger. And by running, I mean at a dogpark constantly sprinting or going on a run with me. Ideally, she should be running around for closer to three hours. A walk just amps her up and gives her a chance to pee and poop. It's hard enough to keep her tired with four people in the family.

If you work a 9-5 and live alone, I don't think a herding breed is a good choice at all.

[–]buttery_shame_cave [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

my neighbors were getting super exhausted exercising theirs. they're getting older but can't part with their dog quite yet, but can't keep up nearly as well as they could.

built them a hand-held, powered tennis ball launcher that will launch balls a good hundred yards. i also put together a frisbee launcher but they said no when i buried a frisbee in the drywall in my garage by accident.

My aussie is my best friend. Really the most amazing breed

AND can find oysters at the beach. Well, at least my aussie could when she was with us :(

lol, mine was afraid of the ocean. she wouldn't even get her feet wet. till the third day or so, when the lab that was part of our group blocked her oceanside when a wave came in. she got drenched, and after that, was ok with it. was all fun and games till a kite surfer came to shore, she didn't know wtf to think of that and bolted. got about 1/4 mi ahead of me, took a turn and vanished. oh shit, lost my dog on vacation...

nope, she went back to the rental house and was waiting by the front door. still impressed with the sense of direction mid panic.

Mine was a terrific swimmer, all by instinct. I later had a German Shepherd and I was very disappointed to see that it does not come naturally to all dogs, as he would scratch us trying to get us to pick him up in the water.

[–]Have_you_seen_MOLLE [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

Agreed, greatest dogs ever, my dad is a breeder and has several and they are the best. I have my own 5 month old now and he chews a lot and is a little over attached but no other issues.

How do they rank for apartment living or allergies?

Aussies are not good in small environments. They need big open spaces and an even bigger amount of exercise. Also their so damn smart you need to keep their minds occupied unless you like your things chewed.

Edit ; not every Aussie is like that. Some are fine in apartments, but most are not.

These seem like pretty large drawbacks that could disqualify them from "best dogs to ever own".

Just because you want a big or energetic dog doesn't mean you have the means to.
Working dog breeds (see herding/shepherds/retrievers) require much more exercise and mental stimulation than a small lap/house dog breed.

Many people don't want a big or energetic dog though. That is why "best" is such an arbitrary thing and his list of aspects of being a dog is slanted. Most people don't care if their dog can herd cattle but would appreciate them to not shed everywhere.

I'd recommend an English Bulldog as an apartment pup. They don't care for too much excercise, or mental stimulation. Just get them a dog bed and a bone.

I've thought about one, but I've also heard they tend towards health issues.

I agree that you should choose your dog based on your own energy level and ability to tend to them.
The "best" statement comes from their loyalty, eagerness to please and intelligence.

I'd even suggest a more intelligent dog isn't a better dog. If you want it as a house pet, sometimes a goofy idiot is best.

If you don't want something big and energetic that requires alot of attention, don't get a dog. Get a cat.

There are plenty of dogs that aren't big or energetic. I'd suggest there are far more dog owners who want a cuddle buddy then there are that want a cattle herder.

[–]buttery_shame_cave [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

you need to keep their minds occupied unless you like your things chewed.

directions unclear, the dog ate the chess set.

In my opinion, it's not about the size of the home. It's about how simulated they are. If you get them out for a romp at the park and have things at home to keep then occupied, then you'd be fine in an apartment. I live in the city in an apartment with my Aussie, but we have a dog park and a ten minute walk away, so that makes apartment living easy.

As for allergies, I have them pretty bad, but I'm mostly just hit and miss with certain dog breeds. Twice a year she blows her coat which is not fun for me, but the rest of the year she's great.

We've been finding the same with my SO. For some reason, beagles seem to be the hardest on allergies.

And when you cross them, you get this pooch: http://imgur.com/kkQkcIY

They are Aussies for sure. Also I want to point out that their lack of tails do not always point to docking. Many Aussie strains are born with bobbed tails. Makes them look like ickle bears as they grow up.

Is docking still allowed in some western countries?

The tails aren't docked: http://www.ashgi.org/home-page/genetics-info/bones-joints/natural-bob-tails

My pit bull recently had puppies and I can say from personal experience

There is nothing more fun and cuter then 10 little creatures charging you

Avalanche of fur. Puppy breath blanket. Needle teeth wounds. I WANT ALL OF IT.

[–]Grassman_of_Gotham 12ポイント13ポイント  (0子コメント)

I just want to lay down and drown myself in puppy cuddles.

YES. And the puppy breath too. I don't care.

It's the burden I would take in order to let this puppy river flow over my naked body. Wait, clothed body. Yes, I would be wearing clothes for this.

After raising almost 4 doberman litters now I have gotten a high pain tolerance to puppy bites and scratches. Honestly there's nothing better than taking a nap with pups.

I feel like a group of this many puppies must call for a particular classification: like a gaggle of geese or a murder of crows.

A puddle of puppy?

A plethora of puppy...?

I think it's still just a pack. Like a pack of dogs, or wolves. But a pack of puppies does work, look at how they attack the person filming.

A clown car of puppies.

I would love an australian shepard. Too bad nobody breeds or sells them in my area :(

I imagine that somewhere, just out of frame, is one puppy that looked up, saw everyone start running about, looked to see it if was food, saw that it was indeed NOT food, and just laid back down. That's the one I adopt.

What I wouldn't give to be in the center of that puppy pile, to be surrounded by those sleepy floofs.
