Banning people for astroturfing has many problems. For one astroturfing is essentially making opinions seem as if it originates from the grassroots. The problem is that the way you're identifying astroturfing is a tad bit arbitrary. For one, if someone just comes up and states their opinion that corresponds with disliked or hated groups such as /intl/ then would you denote that as astroturfing? Posts such as "I hate the mods they are incompetent", "/v/ is pretty shit" or something worse with more feeling with them. Maybe with them even saying common buzzwords found in half-chan like "stormweenie" "stormfag" or something else that could be seen as provocative, offensive, or "part of those opposite groups". In know way have they even stated that they were representing /pol/ consensus in any circumstance.
It's simply absurd. The only way you can rationalize these bans is by saying that they were "implicitly" astroturfing by stating a opinion or statement. People could simply state an unpopular opinion and that would be grounds for a ban in the justification of astroturfing. Unless they were saying things like "/pol/ thinks" "We think" "all of us think", your use of bans is a tad arbitrary and draconian.
You may say that "he was an intl shill anyway", yet I express concern. While guarding against fake consensus may have merits, upholding and incentivizing the existence of the current consensus against dissent is worrisome. This is because you then create the context with your moderation instead of having users create the context instead.

But it isn't. Freedom of speech is worthless. It's only because of the state of modern society that we could ever think otherwise.
