Late to the comments sorry. This is in Florida. It's not a traditional flash like on your phone. The camera has a dim red light and takes pictures in black flash.. it comes out like this but when standing next to it in darkness all you see is a dim red light.

the florida fish and wildlife conservation would probably really love to see those photos and the location they were taken given the florida panther is a critically endangered species and all. I'm guessing you live somewhere in southwest florida maybe glades or hendry county. If this was on private property, they'd probably be very interested in getting evidence of their migratory paterns outside the conservation area designated for them especially since this one doesnt seem to have a tracking collar on it.

From the wiki page on the Florida Panther:

In 2013, it was reported that there are only 160 Florida panthers in the wild.

That's pretty amazing that OP got this shot. I can't imagine that their population can grow too much. The territory for a single cougar is massive. There isn't a ton area in southern Florida for the population to grow into.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Florida_panther

Well I can tell you for a fact there's 159 now. Seen one on the side of the highway heading towards Pensacola.

And you didn't stop to help him with his car? It's bad enough he has to commute now that his habitat is destroyed but he can't even catch a break whilst broken down

Not only did he snap one, but also this one isn't showing the kinked tail (a sign of inbreeding common in FL cougars).

I've seen one in my back yard. I didn't think they were that rare.

Scientists all over southern Florida are braving the glades, fighting off gators, pythons, monitor lizards and mosquito borne diseases; all in an attempt to find and study this most elusive of creatures and you've got them in your backyard?

Yeah, I'm in central Florida though. Maybe they aren't looking here?

Haha I'm in Sarasota and I've had one Florida panther and countless bobcats in my yard. My family in Englewood, fl has one who lives in their backyard lot. I had no idea they were this rare.

Back in 2004 I saw one and I was staying in the Tallehassee(sp?) area evacuating from hurricane Ivan. I didn't get a good look, but I can tell the few seconds I saw him he was looking starved before my dog charged it. No one believed me when I ran to go tell. It gives me chills to think I was almost panther food and me being 12 I was probably an easy looking meal.

I've seen a documentary on animal planet saying they stalk prey for a long time and usually don't let their prey go for anything. I don't know what was up with that particular panther, he looked young, maybe if he were older I don't think my dog barking and charging would've saved me.

Especially in this case as she doesn't have a tracking collar.

A similar event happened on my family's farm. Noticed evidence of some sought after animals and let fish and wildlife know. Despite giving them clear instructions on where to park/drive we were left with a destroyed field filled with tire ruts and mud holes-- and noone wanted to claim responsibility. Never again.

Witchcraft

Infrared.

Although I'd swear this was photographed in visible light from the realistic colours; would be very hard to reproduce that from IR light photography. Maybe there's some low level visible component and smart algorithms to reconstruct normal colours?

Don't overthink it. It's much more likely that OP's just confused/mistaken. It's probably a "red glow" infrared camera (hence the "dim red light") and also has a visible white flash.

This is exactly what must have happened. They just don't understand how their equipment actually works. They just know it has the ability to take IR photos, probably from the box.

So the question is, what was the effect of the flash on the event in the picture?

Pig ran away, cat really wants to know what the hell that bright flash was that alerted their prey in the middle of pitch black night.

EDIT: Yeah, yeah, I just noticed the username.

How can green light spectrum come back to the camera when it's not emanated? I have never seen an IR cam that makes colour images.

It can't. They clearly do not realize this camera has different modes you have to select because that's definitely a white flash and not IR.

the dim red light you see is the visible part of your camera's IR "black flash" mode illuminator LEDs (~950nm). this photo was definitely taken with a white light flash though, since you can see colors. if it was illuminated with the IR flash instead, you would only get a black and white image. your game cam probably has both flash modes (check your manual). great shot!

Yeah.. Doesn't IR light/flash remove most colours? Hence the IR spectrum used?

This looks like a full colour producing white flash

Your camera may have IR features but this photo definitely used a standard flash because it's a color photo and the color balance is clearly from white light.

I had a long chuckle, loud and just brushing donkey brays—who is to say that one is laughing more than one should?

A great man once said:

Be true to yourself [...] and you might not won't end up like the fool who ripped his pants.

Laugh to your heart's content, and if anyone tells you otherwise or you feel rigid social restraints constricting your freedom through your own unconscious self-judgement: take the time to evaluate where these thoughts come from and decide if they're healthy or not.

We catch boars all the time with dogs. They are powerful but can't fight fr more than a few minutes or they overheat and die.

Can a lion take down a wild boar? I really am curious I wouldn't be surprised either way but wild boar are some of the meanest toughest beasts in the woods.

Leopards take down bush pigs, warthogs, and forest hogs.

A cougar can take down an 900 lb bull elk. I'm sure they prefer a smaller elk, but they can do it.

Pigs are tough and compact and have tusks, but within reasonable size, I don't see why not.

I didn't believe a cougar would take an adult elk....but I went to youtube, and damn...it happens...

I was never in the Elks but I've been taken down by a cougar on many occasions.

Not the best, but link for the curious:

https://youtu.be/B4HazYkCjZI?t=50

Edit: this one is an elk calf btw, not an adult.

But how do we know that the cougar and elk weren't secretly paid off for their stellar performance?

That tackle...

I can't imagine what it'd feel like to have something that big hit you that fast, especially without even having a chance to brace for it.

150 lb. animal charging at you at high speed. Perfectly built to murder things bigger and much stronger than you. They are ambush predators, so you are very unlikely to see it coming before it's already got you on the ground with it's fangs in your throat. Fucking scary, but thankfully they rarely attack us.

Eh. Thought cougars could only take down "young studs..."

Absolutely. As tough as feral/wild pigs are, they are still a prey animal. And if that cat gets its jaws on the pig's neck, it is all over.

Earily similar to how I pick up women...

I guess I forget this that they are prey animals. Im terrified to hunt them because of the horror stories I've heard of a bad shot and the damn thing attacking the hunter.

I believe they can, yes.

Source: Watched every episode of Big Cat Diary and will still watch repeats if I can catch it.

Wait, is this Florida? Let's see...

Florida panther? Check.

Spanish hog? Check.

Man being arrested for nude beach blowjob jet ski fight? Nope.

Damn, I was so sure it was Florida.

[–]Cant_trust_the_cunt 39ポイント40ポイント  (11子コメント)

God damn that thing is huge

Foreshortened image. Just like the camera tricks in the Lord of the Rings, one subject is close to the camera (the hog) and the other is much further away. Careful positioning makes them look right next to each other and distorts the relative size.

So yeah, it's a big hog, but it's much smaller then you're actually assuming.

When your wife catches you blowing a dude on a boat off a Florida nude beach, the correct response is to immediately apologize, and, once the situation has cooled, have a frank

They should have terminated their opening sentence right there.

You just sourced us to bother Gawker and the Daily mail in that last link.

I now have Stage 4 brain cancer thanks to you.

so Michael Doster, the guy in Florida who threw his wife off the jet ski 4 times and left her on a sand bar? She died 3 days later from swelling of the brain but he was never charged because she said he slammed her head into the jet ski, he said she hit her head when she fell off. Cops never found the guy he blew who was the only witness. Heavy drinker, convicted felon, 4 marriages, previous domestic battery. And still walking around Florida. Didn't even get charged with drunken boating.

Wild boards are no joke. That's why most contractors use domesticated wood from tree farms. However, a wild board in the hands of a skilled carpenter can produce some awesome furniture.

Pretty sure game cameras use IR LEDs to 'flash'. The camera picks up illumination from IR, most eyes dont.

Many do but seeing as this is a colour photo it suggests that it was a normal flash. IR cameras are black and white.

Probably not something along the lines of this

Where is this?

Edit: Thank God, I figured out it's in the woods. I was just trying to figure out which state, because I was deer hunting in southern Illinois and had a wild cat scream at me. Everyone said it was a bobcat, but I found it hard to believe that a cat that size could have so much bass in its scream. It was pitch black at 4:30 in the morning. I had a shotgun. Nothing chambered and I have never climbed a tree stand so fast in my life.

It's probably Florida, making that florida panther.

Yeah, you're right. His first post was of a bobcat, and someone in that post said they stalked his comments and discovered that he lives in Florida. Also, that tail looked awfully black for a mountain lion, which usually only has a sortof brown/black tail.

So, there are a few cool things about Flordia: wildlife, the Everglades, the Keys, and Cuban food.

Sadly the only cool things about Florida are the things constantly being destroyed by development to make room for the shitty people that give Florida such a bad rap.

I'm no biologist or anything, but I'm pretty sure they can both see light.

My trail cam uses infra red light I think. There isn't a flash. On the video setting everything in the scene appears light and visible on screen but there is no added light. Not a very scientific explanation, sorry.

I doubt it's a traditional flash like you think from the picture. More likely it's a dim red flash or constant dim red light in combination with a low light camera. It comes out looking like this but walking up to the camera in the woods at night you'll only see a faint red glow.

Edit: I get it I know nothing about trail cameras jeeze
