Hi guys Redditors,
I wish to remain anonymous. I had been in contact with the moderators and the general reply I have been given is that it is not their place to get involved. Nonetheless, I hope to be heard. You can contact the mods and confirm that I am not lying about contacting them at least. It is also your choice to believe what I have to say or not. You are free to use this information and cross reference anything at your disposal or directly try to contact the parties involved. While the information I am about to give is privileged, I am not gagged by contract and a lot of the following details are from events in which I find out from internal documents and directly from staff, so I am acting independently and have not been suspected of carrying all this information.
I have worked with a sister company of Creative Intelligence Arts which had dealt with musical production for The Disappearance of Suzumiya Haruhi, Romeo x Juliet, Soul Calibur, IV and Odin Sphere. I often participate in meetings and phone conferences with CIA projects but have often been able to ask other staff members where I’m absent. In fact, a lot of staffers knew what was going on inside CIA. It’s actually nothing new around the office.
So why did Creative intelligence Arts leave as production for under The Dog? Well we need to start from the beginning to get the whole picture.
Originally, UTD was incepted to assist Jiro Ishii in getting his work across to the international community, mainly focusing on the western community. His work was never localised overseas so he was ambitious to work on a production that will involve people outside of Japan. It is a well known fact that Jiro came to Hiroaki for the help.
Knowing Hiroaki Yura directly; it has been one of his pursuits to produce an anime with western influence. We’ve had dinner back in Australia, I recall it’s almost a decade ago when the company had went beyond just music for one of its projects. We said how awesome it would be if one day, an anime can be created to really let Japan and the west relate together instead of the west being observers of Japanese content. Bring a stronger sense of community involvement. Note that this was years before crowd sourcing was a thing.
So naturally, a lot of talks went under way with Jiro using the idea of crowdsourcing. From here, the idea of producing UTD had been realised. UTD itself was born from an original manuscript which was plotted around 1997. It was written around that time when Jiro was employed under a company called Nikkei Eizo. I wonder if the ownership is actually Jiro’s now that I think about it. It was obvious that the blueprints for UTD were made with Nikkei Eizo’s company resources.
I still remember how excited Hiroaki was when he talked to me about UTD, that it’s finally starting to happen. From memory, I remember he had put a lot of his personal assets and finances to start up UTD. He gave off the aura that it was absolutely instrumental for this project to succeed. And why shouldn’t he? Just a year before, I had discussed the anime industry crash in the United States with him, going into detail about how the Japanese industry then reacted and what a lot of critics would refer to as the decay of modern Japanese anime. It was quite serious as (A) For something like Hiroaki’s dream to succeed, it would need a healthy industry to reinforce demand, and (B) we were not entirely sure if UTD would take off on Kickstarter, regardless of Project Phoenix (as it is a video game, which is an entirely different industry.)
In the early stages of UTD, Kinema Citrus was involved, but they were not very confident about Kickstarter either. It is unchartered territory for both KC and CIA. KC was actually in a bad financial position and wasn’t ready to put anything on the table. There were even talks about KC straight up ditching CIA and the project should the Kickstarter failed, including a risk assessment. The scenario of what has actually happened now was actually discussed but nobody thought they would dare to take over the project in such a fashion.
Graphnica was then approached but director Masahiro Ando had voiced concerns of his confidence with Graphnica and was dropped in the early stages. This was when CIA went back to KC and renegotiated.
In reflection of this uncertainty, Jiro had also failed numerous times to reach deadlines to have at least a draft script posted and shown on Kickstarter when the campaign first started. (You can cross reference this on the Kickstarter page and look up the delays.) From recollection, I remember Hiroaki requesting a script around March in 2014 but Jiro refused.
In fact, the general attitude of Jiro was so unenthusiastic, that a few days before the campaign ended, Yusuke Kozaki (the character and mechanical designer) threatened to leave the project because of Jiro’s “unprofessional negligence” (referring to the lack of scripts.) Kozaki had initially boycotted the project due to Jiro’s inaction just before the start of the UTD campaign and the announcement at Otakon last year, but have since gone back after Hiroaki made an apology on behalf of Jiro.
At this point, you can kind of get the idea that Jiro had very little faith with the project. This left a lot of work to be done. I remember Hiroaki had come up with the names of the characters in the story along with the overworld setting.
Everything started to change when the Kickstarter funding goal was reached. Jiro started to show signs of interest. Even saying that that “we” will be world first. Eventually, this went on to become demand for higher pay, that all extra income should go to the creators. I remember Hiroaki agreeing quite positively about this since we’ve known from the start that one of the issues with the anime industry is that the creators are often paid peanuts. But paying for pre-production will come out of Hiroaki’s personal expenses. The greedy demands started tinkling in. Eventually, from the protest of Hiroaki, Jiro threatened to disallow usage of the IP and even demanded that Hiroaki steps down as producer and hands over all financial handling from Kickstarter along with a non-credit on the staff roll. It was at this point that it was obviously about money. Jiro went directly to KC and completed an agency agreement. He also stopped all communications with Hiroaki and his wife Mizuki.
It was around mid September of last year when all this started happening. It has taken months of negotiations but eventually, Hiroaki had to step down in order to keep UTD alive. That announcement a few days ago? Ever wondered why it didn’t answer anything? Hiroaki, and I suspect a lot of CIA staff, were put on a non-disclosure agreement. Currently, I do not know what the deal is but not only does CIA loses any production rights, the campaign backers are basically paying for an episode long anime that isn’t about connecting communities. Hiroaki did have the option to pull apart the whole thing and start from scratch, but it would mean that the Kickstarter campaign backers will have to suffer the consequences. He now has no control of the project at all, including the updates. All this is handed over to KC, and CIA will have no hand in the project from now on.
Perhaps, Jiro had never intended to have too much western influence in his work and had done what he did. I originally felt this way but was later confirmed first hand by another staff.
For any backers reading this: Don’t be afraid. You will still get what you paid for. Hiroaki had made it so that he can ensure this, that is unless KC decides to throw and cancel the project entirely, that would not be under his control. The only real difference with UTD now; the production is now entirely made like any other anime you can download as fansubs.

On a sidenote, the majority of staff on UTD were willing to create a new anime with Hiroaki. Kozaki was very outraged by Jiro’s actions as well. Even a famous external anime production house in contact with CIA had pledged to help if KC was dropped as a result of the downfall. But that would sabotage UTD itself and this would in effect, change what the backers had paid for.
It was quite a surprise when we had later found out Jiro’s troubled professional history. He was accused for stealing credit while he worked in Chunsoft, where he essentially didn’t so any work and took all the credit. When Jiro worked at Level-5, again he was accused of lack of work. He also had arguments with Akihiro Hino during production of Timetravellers. Majin Station, another title that was in development was also suspended without further notice, speculated within the industry again as Jiro’s fault.
Yasumi Matsuno, also had a bad run with Jiro. Yasumi had started a game between game creators called Jin Roh. It is basically a game similar to Cluedo but instead of finding the murderer, you find the wolf pretending to be human through group interactions. All intents of this game was casual and for fun. However, Jiro eventually decided that this should be played much more seriously than just being a casual game. To the protest of Yasumi, Jiro told him to leave the game.
As you can see, Jiro’s negative influences spans more than with UTD. It’s only now that it’s known by people within CIA. Again, it is up to you to believe whether all this is real. I claim them to be but I hope I’ve also given enough clues for you to question not just the legitimacy of my claims but also all the people I have described here. There’s no worth for me to prove my identity as the content of what I have said can be taken as true or false with or without my identity.

DRAMA~

reminds me of /r/starcraft
[–]Arvediu 8 points9 points10 points  (7 children)
Well, I never expected /r/starcraft to be mentioned here... but I guess SC2 drama can surpass every barrier.
PS: GO NANIWA!!
[–]Fallen_Gloryhttp://myanimelist.net/animelist/TheFallenGlory 3 points4 points5 points  (6 children)
That Livibee drama going on has been absolutely top tier.
[–]Sougo 0 points1 point2 points  (5 children)
If you think that crap is top tier you weren't around for the glory days
[–]Fallen_Gloryhttp://myanimelist.net/animelist/TheFallenGlory 0 points1 point2 points  (4 children)
I definitely wasn't, I only started playing during the summer so around 7-8 months ago. I don't really go there often because the /r/starcraft community is ass and I can't stand them.
However I applaud them for making something as dumb as the Livibee stuff in to some huge fucking issue that is tearing the game down.
[–]Sougo 0 points1 point2 points  (3 children)
Ah, unfortunately you've got into Starcraft at a pretty bad time. The scene has been declining quite drastically over the last 1-1.5 years, to the point where the jokes about it being a ''ded gaem'' are actually getting scarily accurate.
The 2011-2013 period was great, and the drama was actually legitimate and interesting to follow.
Hopefully LotV infuses some life back into the game and the community.

Ah, unfortunately you are part of the reason that I do not go on /r/starcraft
[–]Sougo 2 points3 points4 points  (1 child)
I don't know what point you're trying to make because I don't go on /r/starcraft and haven't gone for the last year. I was a religious follower of /r/starcraft and the starcraft community for the period I mentioned. Not sure what I did to merit being that reason. Unless you dislike raw facts about the state of the game.
I do agree that it is silly (and has always been silly) for people who STILL actively follow /r/starcraft to make constant remarks about how the game is dead.
[–]Fallen_Gloryhttp://myanimelist.net/animelist/TheFallenGlory -1 points0 points1 point  (0 children)
/r/starcraft is either petty drama or "our scene is dead and it's serious not a joke" and then no one wants to do anything to help revive it. Instead they all just circlejerk and act like assholes which scares people off.
That is why I do not visit the sub, because that is all the sub is.
[–]Sakkyoku-Sha 0 points1 point2 points  (0 children)
I'm honestly surprised at the amount of crossover between r/StarCraft, and r/anime has

"then reacted and what a lot of critics would refer to as the decay of modern Japanese anime"
What critics are you speaking of? Please tell me Japanese staff don't actually care about American 'anime critics'.
As for Japanese critics, Hiroki Azuma has talked about how the 'creative drought' of anime started in the 80s. Which many of the people who backed this see as some "golden age".
[–]eighthgear 6 points7 points8 points  (1 child)
Under the Dog has been marketed from the beginning to American fans who want anime to cater to them and not to the people from the country that actually makes the stuff. This is why the project targeted for Kickstarter cash. You know how there are those people who think that nothing good has been made since the days of Akira and GitS? Those are Under the Dog's target customers, and they eat up talk about how anime's retreat from focusing on the west has somehow caused some sort of decline.
There's nothing wrong with western-influenced anime, of course. It's just one style of anime, and it can lead to good results. However, sometimes it does get annoying having to deal with people who think that the pinnacle of animation is films that follow neatly western cinematographic techniques with their direction.

Under the Dog has been marketed from the beginning to American fans who want anime to cater to them and not to the people from the country that actually makes the stuff.
That's a bit of a loaded statement. There's a middle ground between 'exclusively Japanese' and 'caters specifically to American culture', after all. You can make a work that is infused with and celebrates a culture while still being universally relatable. Look at Satoshi Kon or even Miyazaki's movies, for example. They're all unmistakably Japanese in their stories, themes, and references, but they're also universal enough that you can fully enjoy them without being part of that culture. And they're no worse off for it.

Since this is only one side of the story let's play devils advocate.
It's clear that the OP is friendly with Hirokai, it's also clear that the OP doesn't think very highly of Jiro. He paints him as lazy in his approach to writing, greedy about his demands, and duplicitous in the way he handled his colleagues. Could Jiro really be that much of a dick? Assuming that the events portrayed are done so truthfully Jiro certainly comes across as a diva who handled this whole business in a rather unprofessional manner.
However that's with us assuming that the OP's characterization of Jiro is truthful. If we remove this idea of 'Jiro the dick' from the equation we are left with a story about a creator who fell out with his producer and so took his ball and went elsewhere. We know nothing at all about how Jiro felt towards Hirokai's involvement, the OP gives no indication of that and for all we know Jiro may have had good reasons for wanting Hirokai off the project.
I think the key point we should be taking away from this is that UTD's recent issues are the result of its creator and producer falling out with one another. The why is unclear, and although the OP has certainly made a compelling argument that Jiro is the one at fault it would be foolhardy to punish the staff still working on this project on the word of one anonymous dude who is clearly biased towards one party.
edit- Look at it like this. The exact same story told here but by someone with a bias towards Jiro could be summed up as 'Hirokai was a dick who didn't understand what he was doing'. None of the factual elements of the story would need to change, only the way in which its characters are portrayed.
double edit- so originally I just felt like playing a little devils advocate, but after reading this;
As you can see, Jiro’s negative influences spans more than with UTD. It’s only now that it’s known by people within CIA. Again, it is up to you to believe whether all this is real. I claim them to be but I hope I’ve also given enough clues for you to question not just the legitimacy of my claims but also all the people I have described here. fuck that. OP, you are a shit. You're making harmful accusations that could negatively affect this guys career, you're providing no evidence to support these claims and you are apparently refusing to prove your identity, choosing instead to hide behind anonymity while you lob trash at a guy you clearly do not like.
You don't air dirty laundry in public like this, no self respecting business would ever stoop to the levels that you have in attacking Jiro's character and blaming him for everything that went wrong. Tell your story if you want, but don't turn your post into a personal vendetta against the guy.
the mods should delete this trash.
[–]Cedstick 17 points18 points19 points  (20 children)
Thanks for the effort :) It does have to be said, as people are quick to jump to conclusions.
[–]x87823199xhttp://myanimelist.net/animelist/x87823199x 13 points14 points15 points  (19 children)
I don't know if you saw this post before op edited it but they've since added claims about Jiro stealing from other jobs and generally being an all round asshole wherever he's worked. Worse still is that the op even said thy have no intention of providing evidence and that its up to us to decide if they're telling the truth or not.
On a totally unrelated note I was surprised to learn that the op eats babies.
[–]UTDT[S] 8 points9 points10 points  (18 children)
I do occasionally fry an egg or two for breakfast so you're not wrong.
[–]x87823199xhttp://myanimelist.net/animelist/x87823199x 5 points6 points7 points  (17 children)
I really think you should remove the parts you added to this post and return it to the state it was originally in, because right now your post reads like a character assassination of Jiro.
[–]Cedstick 3 points4 points5 points  (16 children)
Maybe he deserves it. Then again, how easy would it be for anyone curious to look these accusations up; would there be any information publicly available?
[–]ceol_ 3 points4 points5 points  (0 children)
Not in English.
[–]x87823199xhttp://myanimelist.net/animelist/x87823199x 4 points5 points6 points  (13 children)
Deserves it? If it's true, maybe, if it's not than the OP is making serious, career harming accusations about someone who has been given no chance to defends themselves. Pretty fucked up if you ask me.
[–]blackrepo 1 point2 points3 points  (3 children)
/r/anime. Japan anime industry. Career harming. Yer kidding yourself if we can register enough influence, let alone this post to a busy HR guy in Japan that bother enough to check here.
I say let it be. If he wants to defends himself, then he'll make a statement somewhere but going how canned and fairly muted the Kickstarter update was, I bet those NDA was already in place to cover someone like him.
Plus, I rather know this type of shit than being left in the dark. We make our own judgment thanks.
[–]tistormhttp://myanimelist.net/profile/tistorm 1 point2 points3 points  (0 children)
Plus, I rather know this type of shit than being left in the dark.
That's the kind of reasoning that enables the paparazzi industry. That's not to say that exposing things is bad, but offering a story that could be really biased and defending that kind of behavior by "letting people make their own judgment" is some Fox News level bullshit.
[–]xKurogashi 3 points4 points5 points  (0 children)
x87823199x is right. This is NOT how you air out dirty laundry. This is public slander. No self respecting person in any industry would/should steep this low. OP comes off as the personal friend of Hiroaki who's spent way too many hours on the Internet reading e-sports drama. Little does he know, his personal vendetta on behalf of Hiroaki, is hurting Hiroaki's reputation, in addition to Jiro's. Hiroaki, control your guard dog cause this is not how a professional should act.
[–]x87823199xhttp://myanimelist.net/animelist/x87823199x 3 points4 points5 points  (0 children)
It's making unsubstantiated and harmful claims about a person in a public forum. It could be fucking /fit for all I care and it would still be bullshit.
[–]Cedstick 0 points1 point2 points  (0 children)
Well, hence the reason for this comment chain.
[–]UTDT[S] 1 point2 points3 points  (7 children)
Well that's strange. Last I checked, this was a forum, not a court of law. Besides, if he really wants the right to defend himself, he shouldn't have silenced people by blackmailing them with quitting.
I wasn't here to play court. I was here to provide reasons why CIA had stepped down from production, and further context to why CIA had stepped down with very vague detail.
[–]x87823199xhttp://myanimelist.net/animelist/x87823199x 6 points7 points8 points  (6 children)
He said/she said.
Again, the first thing you wrote was fine. You were indeed providing reasons why CIA stepped down from production. It was the shit you added afterwards that amounted to nothing more than flinging shit at Jiro.
[–]shirokite 0 points1 point2 points  (0 children)
That's why it was stated as accusations and rumors in the "side note", no need to blow things out of proportions.
harmful accusations that could negatively affect this guys career
Hahaha
Thinking our opinions can affect anything that happens with this japanese animation project.
[–]UTDT[S] -4 points-3 points-2 points  (4 children)
And the 'shit' I added after was resulted by your feelings of necessity to charm in to be the prophet.
[–]UTDT[S] -2 points-1 points0 points  (0 children)
It's ironic. It is specifically because most of these people are Japanese, that they don't speak of them with anyone outside. I can only hope that if there are enough people demanding answers, that this information will eventually seep through and with people identifying themselves too.
[–]HaydenTheFoxhttp://myanimelist.net/animelist/Talmhaidh_Mathan 0 points1 point2 points  (0 children)
Thanks for adding this, and thanks for adding the counter-edit. This is no longer information, it's defamation. It would be one thing to have that in the original post, but as OP puts it, he added it intentionally after you presented a counter to an obviously biased argument. I suppose rationality is too much to ask when presenting information anymore. I can only hope that the mods' decision to not get involved doesn't cover deleting low-effort posts.
[+]UTDT[S] comment score below threshold-6 points-5 points-4 points  (7 children)
The last line you quoted was exactly because of you. In fact, my edit wouldn't have happened if you didn't try to play the devil's advocate. Perhaps you forgot what it actually means to play a devil's advocate and you actually meant to say that you're playing a troll.
I don't know about you but you probably shouldn't call the kettle black.
If you are so concerned about this issue, you should go visit Tumblr.
[–]x87823199xhttp://myanimelist.net/animelist/x87823199x 10 points11 points12 points  (5 children)
You were upset because I pointed out your story is one sided? But it is one sided.
And like I said, telling your story, even with the obvious bias, was fine. It was when you started throwing all sorts of other accusations at Jiro that shit got out of hand, and now you're saying that the only reason you did this was because I called the post out for being biased, really?
Chill mothefucker, if you want to make claims like this you should expect to be challenged on them. /r/anime is not your personal soapbox.
[+]UTDT[S] comment score below threshold-8 points-7 points-6 points  (4 children)
I'm hardly upset about you. I have expressed (numerous times) that you can either believe it or not. Nobody needs you to waltz in and warn everybody of the same thing I pretty much had expressed but in a change of words.
You're pretty daring to patronise others of not being able to read between the lines, and that's probably what makes you out to be an opinionated twat for people that actually know how to think for themselves without having you spell it out for them. It's hardly a challenge, you're abusing the fact that I am not in the position to verify myself. I don't know what you get for kicking somebody while they're already down.
[–]x87823199xhttp://myanimelist.net/animelist/x87823199x 7 points8 points9 points  (3 children)
The more you act like this the more it makes me think that your post is full of bullshit.
[–]UTDT[S] -1 points0 points1 point  (2 children)
The more you feel a sense of social justice, the more you'll probably feel euphoric. I never cared about your opinion. You'd probably feel stupid when CIA finally works out a legal way to lift the disclosure.
[–]Soveriegnhttp://hummingbird.me/users/214-soveriegn/ -1 points0 points1 point  (1 child)
social justice
annnnnnd now i know not to take anything you say seriously.

Your call. Doesn't matter to me.
[–]HaydenTheFoxhttp://myanimelist.net/animelist/Talmhaidh_Mathan 3 points4 points5 points  (0 children)
my edit wouldn't have happened if you didn't try to play the devil's advocate
That is the single most petty and asinine thing I've read in a long time. Way to discredit the majority of your post in one sentence. That's almost impressive.
[–]scytheavatar 25 points26 points27 points  (2 children)
Perhaps, Jiro had never intended to have too much western influence in his work and had done what he did. I originally felt this way but was later confirmed first hand by another staff.
I never saw that much western influence in the project from day 1, not sure what people were expecting from it.
[–]Moonhowler22http://myanimelist.net/animelist/moonhowler22 9 points10 points11 points  (0 children)
Me neither. I thought it looked like it could be an awesome show, so I backed it.
I am disappointed to see CIA leave the project, considering it's under their name in Kickstarter, and it's never fun to see this kind of thing happen.
On the one hand, though, it's being left with the original author, so we'll still get the original vision, as opposed to him leaving and handing it to someone else.
I'll remain cautiously hopeful from now on. This isn't confidence inspiring, but it's not the end of the world. I'll also be following CIA and what they move on to.
[–]r_antrobushttp://myanimelist.net/animelist/drogerman 3 points4 points5 points  (0 children)
Well, I backed the project because I liked Ando Masahiro's "Sword of the Stranger" and I liked Jiro Ishii's "Canaan". I never cared too much for the promise of Western influences, I just hope they don't throw the towel on the project.
And if they do—I want my money back.
[–]Nashkt 12 points13 points14 points  (9 children)
I'm sorry to be that guy but does anyone have a summary of this? I don't quite understand what is going on.
There is some sort if fighting behind the scenes and people and things are changing?

Jiro made script.
Jiro lose interest.
Hiroaki and his team push the cart. Help the flames going.
Kickstarter good.
Cost increase.
Hiroaki will pay for pre-production from his own pocket.
Jiro demands more money to him.
Hiroaki says no.
Jiro take everything and do it with Kinema Citrus studio.
Hiroaki and his team got NDA-ed and gutted from the project.
UTD still good, but foundation for the bridge is now kill by Jiro.
TL;DR of TL;DR:
Hiroaki and his team is the childhood friend (guy) that help the female MC (UTD project) while Jiro is that douche that NTR-ed MC away.

Thank you! That really helped.

I think you're ready for an AMA on this yourself :)

I love how this is a real sub
[–]shadedclanhttp://myanimelist.net/profile/shadedclan 4 points5 points6 points  (4 children)
The only real difference with UTD now; the production is now entirely made like any other anime you can download as fansubs.
What does this mean? What were they doing different that is now like other anime?
[–]kidenraikou 10 points11 points12 points  (1 child)
I can only assume that the goal was to eliminate pop-culture stuff that only the Japanese can really appreciate, whereas now they don't care if we understand it or not.
[–]ACriticalGeek 9 points10 points11 points  (0 children)
Not just pop culture, basic Japanese culture: the emphasis on the proper use of names(-san, -chan, -kun); the characters in their teens rather than the 20s; local gods, yoma, oni, and other japanese folklore; architecture and weaponry decisions. Western influence would limit all these.
[–]DONISAUR 7 points8 points9 points  (0 children)
The goal was to be in control of production without suffering from the bullshit and bureaucracy of politics, investors, producers, etc. i.e. being told by non-creators and non-artists what should or shouldn't be included in the anime.
They were going to create a collaborative animation where the content creators would be in complete control of their own product.
[–]urban287http://myanimelist.net/animelist/urban287 17 points18 points19 points  (0 children)
Well damn. If true that sounds like a huge shame. Losing someone with passion because of someone without it.
[–]-Niernen 15 points16 points17 points  (0 children)
So Hirokai was removed because Jiro became greedy? Even if UTD comes out apreviously planned, I don't see is reception being as great as it could have been. This is definition going to leave a sour mark no matter how the show ends up.
[–]xAdventx 5 points6 points7 points  (1 child)
Having followed Under the Dog since the kickstarter began, I was very impressed and excited to see this become reality. It seemed very promising, especially more so after seeing how well the funding went. I personally wasn't able to back the project, and at the time I definitely did want to.
At this point, I'm not too sure where I stand on the situation because after reading x87823199x's post, we definitely are, really only getting one side of the story. It's just disappointing to see something as ambitious and uncommon as KickStarting an Anime run into some huge complications, and possibly discouraging similar future KickStarters from happening as well.
[–]UTDT[S] 1 point2 points3 points  (0 children)
I think it's fine for you to be uncertain. You didn't need to read x878's post to feel that. I didn't intend to dictate everything you should believe, but I am only sharing events which has happened and from what I've seen.
Do question everything you're not sure of though. Google can also be your friend in this case :)

Concerning this quote: "... I had discussed the anime industry crash in the United States with him, going into detail about how the Japanese industry then reacted and what a lot of critics would refer to as the decay of modern Japanese anime."
Can OP go into some details on 'the anime industry crash in the United States' and the Japanese reaction?
[–]UTDT[S] 1 point2 points3 points  (0 children)
Thanks for asking.
The crash pretty much followed after the recent GFC in 2008. This solidified the fear of anime imports into the United States. The impact was also felt worse in the United States as companies like Funimations had pretty much enacted a firesale of it's licences, selling full box sets for a very cheap price. On one hand, the consumers get a great deal, but at a cost. The rate of inflation will only have it harder to sustain the company as they struggle to raise the prices without consumers bailing local markets and import elsewhere. This crash saw ADV, Pioneer Geneon USA, and a few other companies simply disappeared or dissolved into smaller operations.
While that was happening in the US, the Japanese couldn't push licences of new IPs to the US as they are often feared that they will become a liability. A lot of production houses went into risk assessment. Most of them had decided to run a higher frequency of successful IPs that showed a strong following from its first season, so the room for any original IPs often fall under heavy corporate scrutiny with sponsors being on the board demanding what they want or don't want in the series.
Ultimately, a lot of emerging writers and artists are looking into other ways to present their works without being limited or censored by the regular industry process which has become so desperate.

Is this going to end up being a failed KS? That would be pretty disappointing.
[–]UTDT[S] 0 points1 point2 points  (0 children)
No, from what I am seeing, CIA leaving ensures that Jiro doesn't make the KS fail.
[–]homu 3 points4 points5 points  (3 children)
I don't understand what OP hopes to accomplish with this thread, if he's confident that UTD's backers will get what they paid for.
[–]UTDT[S] 0 points1 point2 points  (2 children)
Believe me, I asked myself too.
Partly, I felt that the backers are owed an unfiltered explanation.
And the other part is due to my frustration in seeing a friend being dragged through the mud after being led on, and not being given anything reasonable to work with;
  • Either not step down and having Jiro end UTD, backers refunded.
  • Or let KC and Jiro continue with UTD by stepping down, fulfilling the KS in the most part.
[–]VaultGoat -2 points-1 points0 points  (1 child)
Nah it's pointless. Should've kept this to yourself.
[–]UTDT[S] 0 points1 point2 points  (0 children)
Yeah probably.
[–]YonkouProductions 9 points10 points11 points  (0 children)
As a backer and someone who has been following UTD from the beginning of the kickstarter, its a real shame and disappointment that this clash occurred especially after so many breakthroughs and I believe that without Hiroaki Yura and CIA who marketed UTD directly to international fans via PR and the reddit AMA which gained the support of many people, it wouldn't have been possible to have even gained funding for the project let alone blow the Kickstarter goal out of the water.
One thing that really surprised me (and probably many other redditors) was the transparency and openness the project had as we were being informed of every little thing to the point where I thought isn't it a bit much but it was reassuring, however after the 3 part Q&A it was dead silent and that was worrying.
I'm disappointed with the outcome of CIA backing out but I appreciate Yura's dedication to the project to the point of removing himself and CIA from UTD to ensure backers get the production, however I am doubtful I will support a sequel to UTD given how this fiasco has played out.
[–]Soundwavetrue 4 points5 points6 points  (1 child)
What did i just read?
You didnt give any useful backround on what happened.
Tdlr: I think jiro is a dick
[–]ShureNensei 2 points3 points4 points  (0 children)
There's little to no context or background information -- I feel like OP just assumed everyone reading this would know what he was talking about. That sort of kills any hopes of garnering interest to the average person.
[–]YuzuBestGirl 7 points8 points9 points  (2 children)
Just don't donate to a Kickstarter. Most products are made with profit in mind, anime is no exception. Why bother to be productive when you begin your project with a fuckload of money? You've already gotten what you wanted.
[–]gfdt 7 points8 points9 points  (0 children)
Eh, it really depends. If it's something that you want to get made, then donating can be a pretty good way of helping out. I mean, there's a limit to how much should be donated, but if someone has enough disposable income, and the project appears reliable enough, then donating money is a pretty good idea, especially if it's something that couldn't get funding otherwise.
[–]Sleepy_Smurphhttp://myanimelist.net/profile/Lazy_Smurph 1 point2 points3 points  (0 children)
The point was to give them creative freedoms by having our money and no outside influences. It was and is supposed to be a good thing to crowdfund. It depends on the people in question and Kickstarters can go either way. However people should always know the risk.
I sank 60 dollars on this. If I get something from it great but I am aware things can go to shit.
Would I do it again? Yes just like I did many other times with mostly positive results. Like with Little Witch Academia 2 and more.
[–]yellowjacketIguyhttp://myanimelist.net/animelist/yellowjacketguy 2 points3 points4 points  (0 children)
Wow that was a depressing read.
[–]r_antrobushttp://myanimelist.net/animelist/drogerman 2 points3 points4 points  (0 children)
I just hope all the drama during production doesn't affect the final product much and that when all the dust settles, I'll enjoy watching "Under the Dog".
[–]xKurogashi 1 point2 points3 points  (0 children)
Eh, okay. Too much politics for me. As a backer, I don't really care too much about who's running the show, I just want an anime that I've helped funded. The vision of bridging the East and West, was ambitious and now that there's a fallout on that mission, I can honestly say... Oh well. I never liked the idea that this project was trying to be more than what it really is.
[–]omonomono 1 point2 points3 points  (0 children)
The only real difference with UTD now; the production is now entirely made like any other anime you can download as fansubs.
What does this even mean?
[–]ShureNensei 1 point2 points3 points  (0 children)
You need start with background information about who all the relevant parties are and why we should care before you make a public post like this. I have no idea who Creative Intelligence Arts, Under the Dog, Jiro, etc. all are and would assume that lack of knowledge applies to many others here. Until then, it just looks like a rant.
[–]heidurzohttp://myanimelist.net/animelist/heidurzo 0 points1 point2 points  (2 children)
It's a shame but at the very least perhaps producers and studios will pay greater consideration towards western audiences in the future.
[–]zprima 7 points8 points9 points  (0 children)
This will affect the mindset of future collaborative works in the future. So there may be none at all. Better hope that this does not crash.
[–]r_antrobushttp://myanimelist.net/animelist/drogerman 2 points3 points4 points  (0 children)
Well, for better or worse, UTD showed Japanese producers that crowdfunding is a viable way to get money.
[–]VaultGoat -1 points0 points1 point  (0 children)
Nobody needed to know this
[–]Bola8xxx 1 point2 points3 points  (2 children)
Did op get his infos confirmed by mods like what x87823199x told him to do on the prologue post ?
[–]UTDT[S] 0 points1 point2 points  (1 child)
Tried to but unfortunately after showing them what I wanted to present, they decided that it was best to not get involved at all. Though, I'm sure you could message the mods for a confirmation of contact.
[–]Bola8xxx 0 points1 point2 points  (0 children)
Nah just curious. If you were lying about contacting mods they would've gotten rid of the thread by now.
[–]TBonety 0 points1 point2 points  (0 children)
tl;dr ?
