At least Americans have an excuse to complain that the USA spends too much, but it's just fucking ironic to have someone from a country whose defense is subsidized by the U.S. simultaneously complain about U.S. defense spending (much of it going towards the U.K.'s defense needs...) and then mention how the U.K. does it much better by putting all those resources they don't have to use on a military into their NHS.

Your country couldn't fund the NHS as much (or as little) as it does today if it weren't for the self-sacrifice of the American people. I'll bet Ukrainians would rather be able to complain about long wait times for non-urgent care than the fact that Russia still has a dagger lodged in their side, or that the Vietnamese would love to be able to whinge about U.S. defense spending instead of having to look warily at what China's doing in the Paracels...

Finally ! Someone saying it like it is. As a Canadian living in the us I tell my Canadian friends this all the time. The Canadian military is about the size of the NY state police force. And meanwhile Canada sits on most of the worlds natural resources. Don't tell me Canada doesn't profit from having the biggest mother fucker on the planet as his downstairs neighbor.

The really really sad part is that what little the U.K. puts towards its Ministry of Defence gets them an extremely high caliber of military service across their air, ground, and naval branches. It's not like the U.K. has to get allies for their own defense, they still pull far above their weight even after decades of retrenchment.

But the slicing they've done of their own MoD could only have happened with the knowledge that there's an American backstop -- it's not like they can rely on NATO, as the majority of non-American NATO members have been just as busy slashing their own defense as the U.K. They can even talk about unilaterally giving up their own nuclear weapons since they could (in theory) rely on the American nuke umbrella.

But yes, America spends too much on her military, never mind all that America is expected to do around the world that requires a military arm to be available.

Like I've said for years: America is the sheriff of the world because everyone else elected her to do the job.

do you understand hegemony?

The UK and most of Europe only underspend on defence and military when compared to the overspending of the US.

We have the 6th highest military spending in the world and a well respected military. America in no way subsidises our defence so we can have the NHS.

Edit: also what defence needs. We're not under attack and our military is quite capable of defending our island if needs be.

I'm not sure that's true at all. Money spent on the NHS would never be spent on the defence budget, regardless of whether the US were involved in UK affairs or not.

That's ignoring the fact that money spent on 'defence' is actually 'money spent interfering in wars on the other side of the world in order to claim someone else's natural resources'

Natural resources aren't the objective in these wars. The wars themselves are the objective. It's basically a huge racket to funnel taxpayer money into arms corporations.

are you ignoring the fact that the UK is a military partner and always is in the same wars as the US (Afghanistan, Iraq and ISIS...etc.)
